Күн бұрын

Let's compare the sound of the newly released KORG TRITON VST plugin from KORG COLLECTION 2 with an original hardware KORG TRITON CLASSIC synthesizer sampler workstation from 1999.
We'll play the same preset program and combi patches back to back on both instruments, comparing the sound of the drums, bass, pads, pianos and more.
Can you hear the difference?

Super impressive VST; the old Legacy Collection with the M1/WAVESTATION/Polysix etc has been around well over 15 years, so to finally add a Triton to the pack is outstanding. $399 is a bargain! Also props to KORG for not doing the greedy cloud stuff that Roland is doing; I want to buy and OWN software.

" Also props to KORG for not doing the greedy cloud stuff that Roland is doing; I want to buy and OWN software." - You are WAY out of date on Roland Cloud. A lifetime license can be purchased for each VSTi on RC, and, for most of them at far better prices than the $400 Korg is demanding for the Triton VSTi...

Korg (& Roland) reproductions of old sample based workstations are not "imitations" : they use the same sample banks and consequently have exactly the same sound, period.The only differences due to the higher quality of actual 24bit sound cards converters, which render a more aseptic, a bit colder sound, nothing we cannot adjust with little "warmth" post-processing. Scientific comparision as always, thanks.

Looks like Korg did their due diligence recreating the Triton. I'm pretty iffy about software recreations of analog synths but for something like a PCM based workstation this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for taking the time to do this Woody.

They both honestly sound fantastic, and any difference in the sound is very minimal, they got it spot on. And besides, when played in isolation or in a mix, no one will be able to tell if it was the software or hardware, the sound is simply legit Korg Triton either way! What's more important is how you make use of the instrument.

I'm usually one to say "the hardware sounds better or warmer", but this time is different. It seems that they are identical in my ears. I would even say that some of the sounds seem a little more defined in the software. It's as if the software is using more voices to do the same sounds, and there is more definition because of it. This may be one of the best software emulations/recreations yet.

Hardware Triton also runs software code on it's DSPs to generate sound... DSPs and original code can be emulated 100% to run on x64 CPU. If emulation is done thoroughly (ideal scenario), the only audiable difference is character of D/A converter on audio interface that differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and whole lot more differ to Triton original D/A. Not to mention wow placebo effect when you touch the real thing. Cheers!
@fakshen1973
@fakshen1973 4 жыл бұрын
True. But a good emulation will take that D to A into account. The D to A converter is crucial in any digital synth, sampler, ROMpler (like a digital drum machine). The results of the D to A converter would be pretty predictable to model. I would think the bigger factor would be the A to D converter as the Triton is being recorded to the DAW used for the comparison.

It's hard to tell unless you are listening with good monitors or headphones. Hardware always sounds better because of the A/D converters. It gives the sound a wider and fuller sound. Hard to explain. But I have lots of hardware gear and it always sounds better. But I love software for the ease and automation. With software, you usually always need to make it fit in the mix with EQ and such.

Ok, I waited the entire video before commenting. The Actual hardware instrument sounds much more pleasant to listen to, whereas the VST was clear(er) then the hardware. I prefer the tone of the hardware instrument... especially when you did the LA piano preset. The VST one had high end where the hardware didn't or did but filtered it better. You could see the difference in tone via the waveforms. 💯 Woody! Constructive feedback: It was confusing to me without your direction to know what which version was playing hardware or virtual. I think that a title in the corner would have helped. When you said screen capture, I was thinking about the VST interface.

To install it that vst , your computer Windows OS has to be 64 bit compared to the Triton hardware. That Triton was the synth to get before Fantom X came out 8 years later. I have to find me a perfect condition Karma or M3 . This video is great , it show how many companies could take the software side but I heard the Kronos and Yamaha Montage is amazing hardware synth. The Price of the older synth are getting higher ever year. I have always said if you computer goes down your entire virtual setup goes. But with the hardware , I have yet to see my Fantom X crash. anyways I love your videos. I've watched your old collection of keyboard videos many times and will watch it today. Maybe other people are playing this on better sound systems, but to me they both sound close to identical. If you don't watch the screen, you often can't even tell when it switches from one to the other. That doesn't surprise me. Making a VST model of an analog synth is hard, but a digital synth is basically just software running on dedicated hardware. Take the same samples and software, move it to a PC, and you'd expect a similar result. There may be minor differences in things like DACs, but not so you'd really care. It does seem like this VST is a bit quirky and missing some features for the price. I especially agree that the MOSS board should have been included, as that's very expensive now in hardware.

I can predict the replies already - just go see any "VST vs. hardware shootout" video out there. HW Sounds better! No SW sounds better! No they sound the same! The software has no soul!! etc. I think I'm beyond all that these days - does it matter? My criteria are does it sound good and is it usable? Does it help me make (arguably) better music? There's always the nostalgia factor, and the "I paid HOW much for that board and now it's just a plugin?"... I'm as much a gearhead as anyone and I got over 60 synths now (cause I got the room and an understanding spouse) so I'm qualified to say: Go make some music!! (Personal non-cop out opinion - they are different because the output stages are different and probably some of the math results in processing filters have different round-offs and precision limits due to different hardware. If Korg did the code correctly that should be very close indeed.)

Isn’t the point of a “comparison” to compare? This is literally a comparison video.... and yes the hardware does sound better - same with the M1 sw/hw :p But don’t worry I also get what u mean, but I’m sure it’s not a sin to say “one sounds better than the other” when it actually does... I think the only people complaining about comments like that are people who can only afford the VST but deep down really want the hardware ;-P Because the difference in sound is massive - not to mention that some patches in the vst just sound almost like a totally different sound... It’s just about standards I think, it’s about the quality

@@user-vm1hh2lp1b Sure, and thanks for proving my point! You'd be reply type #1 then! :-) My point is sure it can be fun and makes a good video, but in the end it's just curiosity. If I were lugging around a Triton rack (or even the extreme!) I might seriously consider this as a more reliable replacement for a 30 year-old box if that exact sound was important. Most keyboardists have already gone through later generations of machines and often the exact sample set isn't that crucial, with the exception of iconic sounds.

Chris Cebelenski I agree, it only matters if you genuinely really care about the sound. The triton vst will work just as well in a mix. It just depends on what you want to do. My only problem is when people claim that the vst sounds just as good when it clearly doesn’t... it gets the job done, but as somebody who is very familiar with the triton sound, to me the vst sounds close, but not quite there. And I felt the same about the M1 vst. The stereo with on the hardware is insane and everything on it just sounds BIG & FAT :D I’m also guessing that they just recorded the multi samples instead of ripping the original waveforms from the chips - hence losing detail and depth. But it’s just a guess

Wow, plug sound pretty good! But since the Triton was a sample based synth, it would’ve been pretty easy for Korg to turn it into a VST. However, in my opinion the best thing about the Triton is the MOSS card option (aka half a Korg Z1). I can’t see why Korg couldn’t add this at some later stage, physical modelling should also be easy enough for them to implement in a VST. I would buy it for sure IF they add MOSS to the mix.

The physical modelling tech though is well known, the plucked string model is the Karplus-Strong algorithm from the early 80s for example. There are more modern and improved (though similar) physical modelling VSTs such as SWAM modelled instruments as well as a few other companies that also offer similar models (The best models in the Korg Z1/MOSS board IMO are the bowed string, the woodwinds and brass such as the sax, trumpets, flutes. The other models are OK, such as the organ and electric piano is pretty good, but not as good as say a Pianoteq model.

The CC linked to each knob may change on each patch/combis. If you to the PROG section, select a patch, press the menu; go to the Page 1 (Edit-Basic), the "Controller"' tab you willl see the current assignement for the knobs. For example with the default Triton Classic factory settings, Prog A-000 "Noisy Stabber", the knobs are set this way: Kb 1 - CC73, Kb 2 - CC75, Kb 3 - CC70, Kb 4 - CC21 Same Triton Classic, A-113 "Sweeping EP", Kb 1 - CC17, Kb 2 - CC19, Kb 3 - CC20, Kb 4 - CC21 You will also see here that the ribbon, switch and joystick can also be changed there. If the classic have the exact same screen as the Extreme, on the main screen you should also see in PROG what the knobs are doing. If they are not set to Attack, Decay, Sustain and KMod4; they will have different CCs.

Synth companies should also make usb DACs for their VSTs, based on hardware like physical synths for complete immersive experience. Regular DACs used in computer are trying to make soundstage for movies, music, conversation etc. at same time. They are not designed for "music production" by any means, and software emulation lacks warmth & punch which comes from sound coming through electronic components specially laid down for the synths. But still these VSTs let everyone enjoy, who for any reason we're not able to lay hands in the past.

I think that the proper way to do this kind of comparison is to play the same program or combi and put A and B and ask to think which one is the hardware Triton and then put the right answer: I've watched this kind of test on KZfaq on GForce OB-8 and most of the time none can figure out who is who.

Not sure if the Triton Extreme had a different sound/character compared to Triton but the preset Monolothic Motion sounded very different to the VST when I fired up the hardware a few days ago. And the valve option was off. Also a little disappointed that Korg showed the Extreme in their video 'ad' but the Extreme presets are missing unless under a different preset name. Which is why I've not upgraded yet and sticking with demo for time being. Here's hoping an update will add an Extreme option to select. A bit like the choice of the Odyssey.

I submitted a support ticket and now I am waiting in a cold sweat....wondering if I'll ever receive a reply? What makes me really nervous, is Korg does not refund software purchases....

@@WoodyPianoShack Actually....the mishap I was experiencing, was entirely my fault...as it turned out. What I had overlooked, is that I was required to register my purchase...in order to activate my software(once I did that, everything went as smooth as glass.) I was brand new to Korg software, so I was a bit overwhelmed...as Korg's method of verification & installation is a bit different. Once I opened up my Reason 10 DAW...the Triton collection was up & ready to go & I love the software! Thanks for your reply....cheers. 😎

Hey, I setup this VST in Reaper and when I'm tryng to get it to play a midi track imported from a differernt editor, it doesn't make a sound (although the keys in the UI are being pressed). However, when I manually input notes in Reaper's own midi editor, Triton plays them. Does anyone one how to solve this?

@@WoodyPianoShack yes, I can play it with midi keyboard and I can playback any midi notes created in Reaper's own midi editor, but not the files I import from Sibelius. I don't think they're that close tone wise, and it's not down to EQ differences . The keyboard sounds more open, airy and nuanced, more 3D like and you can hear the layers of the tone, the VST is closed in and much more flat sounding with the frequencies bunched up sounding shrill . OK I'm being slightly dramatic but this is where every damn VST clone always fails for me, not at all in the basic sound of the patch (that's exact / spot on !) it's the body of the sound that's always wrong ! I love software BTW, Omnisphere, Hive etc are amazing but these clones never sound as good. Thanks for the demo Woody and sorry to be negative :(

@@WoodyPianoShack a null test... you take both wave forms, the one from each keyboard since they are being triggered by midi they should be the same... take one of the tracks, either the hardware or software and flip the phase in one of them.
