Your right, You can count tones but for new players it is sometimes easier to see the frets as their stopping points. That's the way I was taught and I was just passing it by. If you put your bar on the fifth fret it would be a 5 and if you put your bar on the seventh fret that would be a 7! One of the biggest problems with teaching is , as you know playing the guitar , you have two or three different ways of learning and after you learn to plays chords and then someone puts the number system on you, it makes you have to think about where to go next? It's all good. , Thanks for your help! Have you ever played a six string guitar , tuned in open G , Keith Richards is the Master of the open G tuning..............also you can play the neck with one finger as the Bar, for bar chords? Just wondered, Thanks for the info........

Hey Cuz, Just a note? The one chord is open and then you go to the fifth fret and that is the FOUR CHORD, and then two more up to the Seventh fret would be your Five chord. It will always be 1-4-5 Nashville numbers and then if you start at the G on the thrid fret, next would be the 8th fret C and then 10th fret is the D, so think about it this way, basic three chords in a country song........0 - 5- 7 so if you go to the 5th fret (A) five more up the neck would be the tenth fret, (D) and two more at the 12 th is the (E) chord again, just like it is open, Hope that helps you... O ---5-----7 it is open , up 5 and two more...........Good luck Cuz

Hey Kountry : I have a question for you, I hope you know the answer, the answer has eluded me. when I pluck the string, any string on my home made PSG, it has a kinda buzzing sound, I can not find it, I even took parts off one piece at a time, trying to find what was making the buzz, even the last string on the guitar, all pedals, all pull rods, all bell cranks, every thing, with the last string on, and some buzz more then others, with one string one it, it will buzz, it don't seem to be transferring to the amp, but why is it buzzing?, there is no reason to buzz, but it is and I can not find any thing to buzz
@KountryCuz16 жыл бұрын
Most Time String Buzzing is at the Nut , Take your Finger and push down on the String on top of the nut And see if it Stops The Buzz Most time String Buzzing comes from the Nut , Try and Push down on the string on top of your nut If it stops Buzzing then you will need to cut your nut slots not as Deep . Let me know if this helps !!!!!!!!

Hey Kountry: I have a project I am going to start soon. going to make a 6 string pedal steel, and going to put all three pedals on to one. by not being a player that plays enough to stay up on it, I have to hunt for the pedals I need to push, so pedal 1 controls string 3, pedal 2 controls string 1, and pedal 3 controls string 2 and 3 so I intend to put all three onto one pedal, now, I know it will stretch all 3 strings and they will not last as long, but for some one that does not play like he is playing for a living, maybe they will last for a while, and if it does not work, well, I can always put 2 more pedals onto it, but maybe one pedal can take the place of three, what do you think about this idea?
@KountryCuz16 жыл бұрын
Well All you Need is 2 Pedals 1 to bend the G# up 1/2 tone and one pedal to bent The To E string up A whole Step at lest that I have mine and it goes from the one chord to the 4 chord Fine Let me know what you think PS also Depends on your Tuning ! I use open E
@tonedeaf23946 жыл бұрын
it is to hot in my shop, when it cools down I will go all out to get it done, I have tuned to E 9th. the one I made has 3 pedals, its just a project, it will be interesting to see what will happen PS- I tuned the 5 string on the 6 string pedal steel which is F# I think that is correct, would have to check to be for sure, but I tuned that string to E and, I only use 5 strings it seems to really make it easier to play, the F# with out knee levers is really to me any way is just a waste of string, works well for me in E

hey Kountry, I been trying to play a dobro in open G, I really like the sound of your lap steel in the open E. so when I tune the dobro to the open E it seem I will have to relearn the art of playing. so my question is, what are the advantages of the open E over the open G? and as a side note, you have me interested in making a Lap steel. I have made lots of wood projects. I would love to have one of yours, its worth the challenge to make it If I never learn to play it, I also learn a lot from you about notation, that may not be the right way to spell it , it where you level the strings, herd of it all my life but never knew what it was till I watched one of your videos. now I know the importance of it. and , I am looking forward to building a lap steel, Thanks for all your information TD

Perhaps you're thinking of the Dunlop Long Dawg ? Or for the obvious solution , just use a Dobro Bar on the lap steel . Most players who come to Steel from a Dobro background simply use their familar grooved bar . Including today's most widely known dedicated Lap Steel player Megan Lovell of the group Larkin Poe . Even for people coming to Steel from scratch can work out for themselves the tradeoffs between grooved and bullet bars : Groved has much better bar control ( and usually better for single note and hammer on & pull off , depending on the exact variation of grooved bar) . Bullet is better for very extreme slants ( but the Dobro oriented SP-2 bar kind of meets a bullet halfway for slants , with finger grooves on the Ends of the bar also ) .

Please call the "tone bar" the "steel," since that is what it was called until somebody decided to get fancy. Now, I don't know, but I would guess the reason it is called a "steel" guitar is because it was played with a stainless "steel" bar. How horrible it would be if we changed the name to the "tone bar" guitar. Shivers! I am not criticizing, just commenting. I am learning a lot from you and plan to go through each of your videos. The more I practice, the more I learn.

Dobro strings are default intended for GBDGBD on a 25 inch scale instrument . Everything else equal , the only marginal thing tuning to EBEG#BE , the #4 string would 75% probability of sucuessfully tuning up . But most lap steels have shorter scale lengths , so then no problem .

Hey @@KountryCuz1 (all for sale) I found a bandit 65, hooked it to my PSG, it had more distortion then my toy amp, so amps new are to high, (can't afford one) so I am going out of the music business, two 6 string pedal steels, one is equipped for both pedal steel and in a few mins pedal lap steel, believe it or not I prefer the lap steel version. PV viver 1 and PV bandit 65 all for 1200 dollars, package deal they are tight and solid, hold tune great

I made both of the guitars. and, my wife is complaining and don't want to spend any more money, and I respect her enough and she works and is hurting her to work, she is going to retire soon, so I will keep her satisfied, but I refuse to play on a amp that don't sound right, I made 5 guitars and learned a lot and this is the last two I made, sold one that went to KY, some good musicians played it and said this really sounds great, and these last two are just as good maybe better, I love to build them, but am disgusted with the hole matter, I have deiced to get out, if you are interested I can send pic's or a video if you like. or if you know any one that is interested @@KountryCuz1

The problem with teaching beginners YOU NEED TO START FROM THE BEGINNING. I AM WATCHING WHAT YOU ARE DOING BUT I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT YOU ARE DOING. ITS PETTY BUT I WANT TO learn how to.

Cuz, NO DISRESPECT.....PROMISE, Just want for you to totally understand the Nashville number system.......I am going to use the song , ( YOUR CHEATING HEART ).......If your lap steel is tuned in open E that is where you would start........You would play the guitar in the open chord, E would be the ONE CHORD, open , no bar, and then the next chord to that song would A, Starts at E and then moves to the fifth fret which is a A, that is the four chord, and then up two more frets, which would be a B CHORD, at the 7th fret.., then back to the one chord which is the E again..............So you have a one chord at the open , no bar is a E and then to the fifth fret A and then the seventh fret is the B chord and it would also be the five chord. If you have ever played a six string guitar and use a BAR CHORD, with Your first finger on your left hand. Bar chord you would put your first finger , across the 3rd fret which would make a G BAR chord and up to the eight fret would be a C at the eight fret and then , up two more to the tenth fret, more would be the D chord, and also would be the 5 chord....then go back to the third fret to the G chord again, which is also a the ONE CHORD again, ...The same goes for the lap steel, You would not place your finger at the open fret So the E is open tuning and then the fifth fret would the four chord and the 7th chord would be a B chord or the 5 chord. Check this out and let me know if that helps? If you want to play a song in A would start at the fifth fret , which is the one and then the next chord would be at the tenth fret D , which is the four chord and up two more to the the 12th fret which would be the E at the 12th fret.....and so on! let me know what you think, This a great way to play and learn is using the Nashville number system, which the singer can lead you thought the song with their hands raising one finger which they would play what ever you want and the singer will tell you with their hand, It is a very cool way of teaching some one what they .needed to know while they are singing! Hope this helps, 1-4-5 major chords............JE

Wow James We are both wright Open E is open The 5th Fret is A witch is 6 Tones Away and the B is 8th Fret witch is 8 Tones Away So to me the 1 is open the 4 chord is 6 Away and the 5 Chord is 8 Tones Away witch is the Open then 5th Fret and 7th fret You can not count Frets in the nashville No system just Tones and note's One of my guys plays the Fiddle and he don't even have Fret's on that thing , but he still reads the # System !

Yes, you are right , but think about this. If someone is going to think about playing a lap steel or a pedal steel, would it is easier to think in terms of the one chord as the root and then you would move up neck from the open or root chord to the four chord would be five frets up and then two more. would always give you the 1-4-5- , or from the OPEN 0- then the four chord would be up five frets and then the seventh fret would be 5 chord . You wouldn't have to worry about counting notes. I was always taught that the root was open, - 4 - was fifth fret and 5 chord would be up two more? It really doesn't matter how we get there as long as we are on the same page. My teacher could be totally wrong. I just didn't understand moving up the sixth fret and eight fret? Keep up the good work and I would like to see one of your lap steels when you get finished with the new ones. Do you take custom orders if I want a certain color? and what kind of tuners do you use. Thanks again for your help!

No The 4 chord will be 6 Frets away and the 5 chord is 8 away from the 1 chord in any key !
