This basso profondo,in this video, can hit low notes like G1,E1,.....,JD Sumner can hit low notes even lower, like C1,but JD Sumner is a not a basso profondo. He is a bass. What's the difference between bass and basso profondo(because their range is very similar and some times basses are lower)? P.S.Thanks for your time bro:)

Sumner just doesn't fit into that sort of vocal classification at all because he is singing in a different genre. In Southern Gospel music, they don't differentiate between different sorts of basses (cantante, profondo, etc.)--they just call them basses. Sumner uses a microphone to sing these notes. When you have your lips pressed against a microphone, it is very easy to sing extremely low notes. What makes a true profondo or oktavist different is that he is able to sing these notes without a microphone with good volume. We don't really know, but if Sumner were singing without a microphone, I doubt he would be able to get very much volume below C2. He has a low voice, but not like a true profundo.

k barber I'm sorry to disagree with you but JD Summer has a basso profundo range, okay he can't go down to C1 with the natural power of his voice like Zlatopovsky could but I've heard recordings of Summer singing without amplification and still went down to A1 or G1 or even lower. But I do agree he doesn't sing in the same genre. And he uses the microphone to get down to the very deep like C0.

I'd love to hear these unamplified video recordings! Post them as a reply to this message. I've never seen any clip like that, and I've watched a lot. I saw one where he went down to D2 singing around a piano with the Stamps and Elvis, but it wasn't a very loud D2. His voice appears to be mostly lowered through abuse (smoking and drinking), so while it produces very low tones easily, it doesn't seem that these notes ever can have much volume.

The range is the same, but the difference is the power of the voice! A Basso profondo can sing the lowests notes without microfones and sound completely audible to the audience. Best regards from Brazil!

My apologies, but I'm not sure what your question is.

There's always Google if you really want to know what the Basso profondo classification. It mainly has to do with how low a bass can go. Same in reverse for a coloratura soprano. With basses, it's a chest voice, with sopranos, it's a 'head' voice.

***** Yes, I didn't want to go on forever so gave just the basics. They learn very well how to use their chest voices to the maximum. I have loved the Orthodox Liturgical music of Eastern Europe since I was a teenager and that was many, many moons ago. Sounds best, to me, in the cathedral setting as the reverb works so well there. After all, that is the venue that the music is written for. I have several CDs of this music and listen to them often.
