I went here very recently, travelled up from Kyoto and stayed in a temple. For me it was the highlight of the entire trip. Okunoin at night was really special. It's a bit of a pain to get too, but it is worth it.

I went to koyasan last year and it was definitely a highlight. It was every quiet and hardly anybody was there, at times it was empty! I drove myself and experienced okunoin at night and early morning to see the breakfast ceremony. Highly reccomend!

It is, go for it. The overnight stay is a bit costly and the mornings are incredibly cold, you could chose to just go in for the day but the entire town is like a museum.

I had a trip to Japan scheduled in March 2020 that of course had to be canceled last minute. This part of the trip was what I was looking forward to most.

You have totally understated the insane quality of the dinner in the Ekoin temple. It is the by far best dinner I had in Japan. In both quality and flavour. I also booked the guided tour through the cemetery with the Ekoin monk. Also heavily understated. The level of depth and detail you get from the tour is unparalleled. That monk will give you the best understanding just how mega sacred the place is to Japanese buddhism. Only a complete will ignore his plead to not take any pictures within the most holiest and most sacred core of the cemetery. However some people are just beyond important and will take pictures only one minute after the monk told everybody not to. I wouldn't be suprised if Japan decided to reject entry to foreigners to that cemetery core shrine just as Japan did with Kyoto's famous geisha district, where foreigners ignored the instructions to not take pictures of the geishas on the street. Until this day I deeply regret not punching that dudes face for his complete ignorance.

I guess you didn’t learn anything about the tenets of Buddhism if you wanted to punch someone in the face. A punch-minded foreign tourist is worse than one ignoring photo guidelines.
