I was in Ethiopia and I could not believe how electricity was so cheap that the women who cook tea and mandazi on the streets use electricitric jikos in Addis Ababa. I traveled all the way to Tigray and Amhara regions and all homesteads in the rural towns used electric coils to cook. The reason is that power generation and distribution is done by the state as a service e and not business to make exploitative profits as is in kenya. Something is seriously wrong g in kenya that needs to be dismantled.

@@mushken65 How do you know its not exploitative?. Have you undertaken a full and comprehensive study of the ethiopian energy industry. If not, then you have no basis? Just because the energy in ethiopia seems "cheap" to you, it may not be cheap to ethiopians. The words cheap and expensive differ depending on a persons financial situation. That ethiopian power may be exploiting its people and they are not even aware. In short? Do a good research before commenting on matters you know nothing about.

Why don't polluters clean their pollution? When contracts are written include a clause that mandates companies to clean the environment if they pollute it. Wamatinga is the only fellow I have heard who knows what is happening with Electricity Power. However, he is geting lost in environmental degradation. Contribution of IPPs in environmental degradation is almost NIL when you compare with all diesel trucks, aeroplanes, cars, buses, TukTuk and motorbikes etc. The main thing to address is the production Contracts. The worst part is when we have Wind and Solar installation which do not work during calm days and at night when their facilities do not produce. We still pay them for the installed capacity. Bure Kabisa. Baba should be holding Maandamano to bring down the cost of power.

Great conversation, good to know our leaders are trying to do something about this IPP's. What wasn't mentioned and which might surprise Kenyans are the prices we buy power at from this producers: 1. KPLC imports power from Ethiopia at approximately 7.5ksh per unit. 2. KPLC buys power from kengen at approximately 5ksh per unit 3. KPLC buys power from IPP's at around 45ksh per unit. When I heard this, and this are approximates not actual figures I was so shocked. And we have an obligation to buy from the IPP's it's not a choice.

How Kenya can rid off itself from deisal power plants (IPPS) with no cost Using carbon credit financial instruments, Kenya can apply to buy off IPP contracts before their expiry dates by decommissioning IPP power plants and using the carbon credits derived from decommissioning to pay of the contracts. Ipp's produce 30% of Kenyas energy mix almost 200mw. To replace this power, Kenya signed a power purchase aggreement with ethiopia to provide 200mw with a potential to provide 400mw when needed. So this power can easily offset the deisal power plants. This year 35mw of geothermal will be online so this too can cushion the country from any power loses from deisal plants. If this type of carbon offsets is not available kenya needs to push the UN to have it as part of carbon credits.

The govt needs to privatize Kenya power to a global company in the mgt of power companies like seimins. Siemens brings its expertise, best ngt practices on how to run a power compmany just like we did with safcom and brougt it a compnay that is in the telecommunications business and today safcom is the most profitable company in east africa. The govt gets 50% shares and siemens gets 50%. As it is Kenya power will never change run by Kenyan mangers. because the culture of efficieny, best mgt practices is lacking. Kenya managers are only good if they are supervised by global companies because these companies will take no nonsense and ensure efficency and profitablity will be their main core You can not run an effecient power company when you purchse 5b worth of unworking transformers. This will never happen under a global company but only in kenya and expect cheap reliable power. Safcom is successful because the global partners will not accept Kenyan mangers corrupt ways and waste and mismanagment.

Senator is correct 💯%. However, government works on rules which can't change until calamity takes place and the cartels adjust the laws unbeknownst to parliamentarians. After a great collectivism of minds, the law is bent against the truthful consumers...solution is to put a clause in every law that mandated to be corrected on the basis of former committee minutes. Rumor has it that Kenyan are not permitted in law to do commercial manufacturing. Ask the senate to quote the chapter and clause in the constitution! And yet it is operational...

We were told in January this very year by the top leadership of Wamatinga's party that power bills wouldn't go up, yet they've gone up to a point higher than they ever were?
