Following the end of the Second World War, the defeated German Army was disbanded by the victorious Allies. However, the ever-rising tensions with the Soviet Union forced the Western Allies to reconsider this decision. The new West German Army, known as the Bundeswehr, was formed in 1955, and soon after, a large rearmament process was initiated. In the case of the armored reconnaissance units, the Bundeswehr requested the acquisition of small tracked armored reconnaissance vehicles. These came in the form of the Schützenpanzer (Kurz) - Infantry Fighting Vehicle (Short). Ironically, these were developed by the French company Hotchkiss, as the Germans lacked the industrial capacity to do so on their own. The reconnaissance vehicle was offered as part of a family of vehicles, ranging from infantry fighting vehicles to ambulances. Among the vehicles offered was a reconnaissance tank destroyer, which would be known as the Spähpanzer 1C (Reconnaissance tank 1C) or SP. 1C for short. While initially, this project was seen as a good solution, it quickly turned into a flawed vehicle with numerous problems which ultimately led to its cancellation.

4:15 I believe when Engesa, in Brazil, wanted to buy the D921 gun for the EE-9 Cascavel, the French refused to sell it without the turret, so it would make sense that the same was the case with this vehicle. Engesa eventually moved on to a license built version of the Cockerill 90mm gun

I always thought the Spähpanzer was a fictional tank that WarGaming came up with. Also, Kraut Scout is funny.

Hotchkiss got the contract mainly due to bribery, not any logical reasons. Any german company no matter if experienced with tanks or not could have delivered a better vehicle than the Hs 230

Dawg the Germans didn't build their first post war vehicle until the mid 50s. Germany was in no position to manufacture military equipment domestically on a large scale for decades after the war

Typical of what seems to happen with this type of vehicle. The airborne folks want armor. Then mission creep sets in and the vehicle cannot be air dropped. Then you have a solution in search of a problem.

The same problems of drifting expectations ruined the tanks that never were of WW2: T50, US M7, and Deu Spahpanzer II Leopard. This is due to planners acting like too many chefs and spoiling the stew. The SPW250 and SPW251 serie Armored Infantry vehicles were the first German light combat vehicle families*. These halftracks were produced in many specialist variants; radio link, mortar carriers, howitzer carriers, AA vehicles, armored ambulances, artillery ammunition carriers and spotting vehicles, and command vehicles; as well as the bases for many improvised fighting vehicles in the field. The troubles with halftracks are several, including complexity of drive train and suspension (especially multiplicity of parts per unit), poor off road performance (compared to alltrack vehicles of similar specs), and awkward intent of wheeled steering units (which were meant to ease driver training). What if a nation could take that combat vehicle family concept and mount all kinds of specialist shells on a single dependable all track chassis? Think of the money and time and effort we could save! A great idea . . . until mission drift puts stars in the eyes of potential procurers. What if we could make it air mobile? What if we could make it amphibious? Well, it looks like a tank now! Let's put a high caliber gun on it! What they got was a racehorse designed by committee. Really, the idea is sound. The concept is a good one. The problem lies with folks changing expectations as engineers make drawings for them to ponder. This ends up in Professional Art hell: "No no! That's not what I wanted!" "It's exactly what you asked for sir. Here's the spec sheet you issued." "No no! You don't understand what I want! Can't you read my mind? What are you-stupid?" "No sir. Merely loyal . . . oh. I guess I am. Loyalty to idiots does make a man look stupid. I think it's time to put in my two weeks notice. Space Patrol, here I come!" * For the USA it was the M24 chassis. For the Brits . . . "if we call the Churchill a light tank . . ."

The so-called "complexity" of halfstracks wasn't seen as such by the Germans at that time. In fact it was done because it was more SIMPLE and cheap than a fully tracked vehicle. Any ordinary truck could be the base of a halftrack with not that many alterations (for example the "Maultier" vehicles). Pre WW2 the German army complaint was that they lacked the funds to have fully tracked vehicles. Halftracks can have a normal gearbox/differential and only need increased brake power at the rear when the tracks get very long like in the Sdkz 250/251 etc but in the case of the short tracks used in the Maultier rebuilds no extra brakes were added, the trucks could be rebuild in the field by specialized maintenance crews. A fully tracked vehicle needs a more complicated (tank-like) gearbox, is therefore much more expensive instead of a simple truck-like differential and gearbox.

It is interesting how so many seeSpähpanzer 1C as a failure due to the gun performance. Meanwhile BMP-1 entering service in late 60s was said to be something amazing... or at least that's what Soviet propaganda says. Having a 73mm CANNON on top of your infantry carrier was certainly something new, but that gun was an enormous failure: Under 500 metres effective range with HEAT and the HE round came a decade late.
@TanksEncyclopediaYT
@TanksEncyclopediaYT 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, but this thing's cannon and it's AT performance where its entire raison d'etre. For the BMP-1, the 73mm was just for infantry support, which was supposed to be close anyway.

I wonder if the Spähpanzer was the inspiration for the later Begleitspanzer, which had a similarly shaped turret, a 57mm autocannon and was based on a Marder hull. The Begleitspanzer was also designed to function as a reconnaissance vehicle. It never went beyond prototype stage and was never further developed.
