The sea, the sea helped him drift away from the disastrous indo-china war in which he fought on the french side, realizing bit by bit how awful it all was. His brother had commited suicide after having killed the old vietnamese man who was the local spiritual leader. Colonial and civil war was so cruel that he took a lifetime to recover.

I just finished reading “The Long Way.” Thanks for posting this video; it helped me appreciate that great book even more!

I read his book 'the long way' when it first came out. I was with him all the way via his book and he took me out of my 'dark days' I lapsed into at the time.

If you look closely at around 4:46 you'll see a humpback whale dipping back into the sea. Bernard was showing us he was not entirely alone...
