The Russian government has warned that European capitals could become targets if US missiles are deployed in Germany.
The threat comes after the US and German governments announced that long-range weapons, including Tomahawk cruise missiles, would be stationed on German soil by 2026.
For more on this, we talk to Marina Miron. She is a military analyst at King's College London

The key question here is: why are the US and Germany stationing missiles in German territory? As the interviewee said, Russia is thinking how to to respond to this move, which is an obvious and expected reaction. How can EU countries agree with this US/Germany move, which is basically putting a target in the whole EU?
@peabase
@peabase Ай бұрын
Uh, nothing changed. And the move is addressing the imbalance created when Russia's deployed its Iskanders in Kaliningrad and Belarus. You should ask what Putin was thinking -- didn't the 4D chess master foresee a reaction from NATO? Also, don't forget to wonder what the Russian people think of their bunker grandpa painting crosshairs on them. Tackle the root cause first. The consequence is literally secondary.
@AntonGudenus
@AntonGudenus 17 күн бұрын
Russia has repeatedly threatened Europes countries with their nukes. And that's even though most of those countries have elected not to get nukes of their own. According to Russia that target always was there to begin with. It's Europe doing the reacting here. And they are reacting in the least escalatory manner possible. Germany/Poland/Italy/Ukraine could just as well field their very own nukes, if they decided to do so. They are "nuclear latent" after all. In fact Russia can't really "respond" to that move, as they already have moved their own nuclear capable hypersonics into Kaliningrad and therefore in range of most of Europe, thereby choosing one of the most escalatory paths possible. And they made sure to let everyone know about it.

Dr. Miron notes correctly that the Tomahawk is most famously a naval weapon, featured in news stories when the United States gets angry with someone and flings a missile at them from a warship or submarine. you're about a century behind in your calculations, first of all the industrial output is actually heavier to the east. Secondly with the globalization and supermarket-ization of russian economy it's even more evenly spread these days than even during the soviet union. Russia is mostly an asian country. The population is densest around the European part and along the entire southern border with central asia so again, it's pretty evenly spread in that sense. @MyNameIsXYlp

Russia has nukes targeted at Vienna. And just to point you towards why that's slightly unsettling: Austria is fiercely neutral, definitely not a part of NATO, has a huge distrust of the US, regularly was more friendly to Russia than the US, has no nukes of their own, hasn't even a military capability to reach Russia.

Curious. Tomahawk is a subsonic cruise missile launched from a variety of platforms, land, sea, and once again, ground. This subsonic missile flies at less than 768 miles per hour. The distance from Moscow to Berlin is roughly 1000 miles. Wouldn't this make the flight time closer to one hour? Perhaps the Russians should be more concerned about the next generation LRSO stealth cruise missile, or the soon to be deployed hypersonic air launched cruise missile (HAWC)? There's an old saying out here in the country - "Never start a fight you're not prepared to finish."
