Today we are going to learn about the life of Krishnamurti, one of the most influential thinkers and speakers of the 20th century.
Jiddu Krishnamurti was seen as a sensitive, dreamy, and even lazy young man. For this reason, he was beaten many times by his parents and by teachers. Fate led him to live with the Adyar Theosophical Society, where his father began to work.
In Adyar the young Krishnamurti enjoyed the beach and there he met Charles Webster Leadbeater, who saw in this young man a special aura and was convinced that he would become a great spiritual teacher. For this reason the members of that Theosophical Society began to instruct Krishnamurti in various subjects. He was very good at studying, but he managed to be quite proficient with the English language.
Krishnamurti was very close to Annie Besant, president of the Theosophical Society for 30 years, and whom he sometimes saw as her own mother. They decided to create the Order of the Star to prepare the world for the fact that a new master had arrived. That new teacher would be Krishnamurti. Many disagreed with this fact, especially members of the theosophical society itself. Little by little more publicity was given to this fact, something that Krishnamurti bothered him more and more.
In 1911, he and his brother, Nitya, went to England, and there he gave his first speeches. In addition, the first writings of him were published in different brochures. His popularity caused him to receive an important donation from a woman, for which he already felt financially independent. After the First World War he continued to give lectures, and they were always about the revelation of the arrival of a new teacher.
Due to an illness of his brother Nitya, Krishnamurti decides to move to Ojai, in the state of California in the United States. There he bought a house and it would be his official residence. It was here that he had the first mystical experience of it. This was a great change in his life, he realized that he knew something new without the Theosophical Society transmitting it to him. So he became more confident in himself, and it was the beginning of his independence. On the other hand, his mentors took advantage of this mystical experience to show the whole world that he really was the expected teacher, but Krishnamurti did not believe that it was so.
When his brother Nitya Krishnamurti died, his work grew further and further away from the Order of the Star, until in 1929 he decided to leave the Order, which disappeared. This fact caused many of those who until then were his friends within the Society to turn their backs.
Krishnamurti has lectured throughout his life, he has not stopped writing, and his teachings are transmitted all over the world. With the famous physicist David Bohm he had numerous group discussions for more than 20 years, and thanks to them we know many of Krishnamurti's ideas.
Krishnamurti tells us that we must make a revolution, we must change the way we relate, and we must make a change in society. This revolution must not be led by religions or politicians. The revolution must be in each one of us, and thus we can see it reflected in the world.
