Born in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, Kristen Pfaff would go to catholic school where she learned cello and piano at a young age. Her parents would divorce when she was young, but her mother would remarry and she would have a younger half brother. School mates of Pfaff who attended the same catholic school as her described her to the buffalo news as and i quote “bright, happy, always peppy," Not only that but she excelled in school achieving good grades and getting scholarships.
She would attend Boston College and do an exchange program in the Netherlands. It was ffter from returning overseas she would study English and literature at the university of Minnesota starting in 1988. It was while she was a student at the University of Minnesota, she was an important figure in the development of the University radio station called Radio K. There’s even a clip of her on KZfaq hosting a show if you guys are interested.
Her father would tell the buffalo news "That's when Kristen's life really changed. She learned to play bass and wanted to be in a band."
She soon quit school and took up bass and started playing in a 3 piece called Janitor Joe that was part of the Minneapolis music scene.
Janitor Joe played angst ridden and loud music and that caught the attention of local indie label AmRep who signed the band and put out their debut record Big Metal Birds in 1992. It was while on tour with Janitor Joe that Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson attended one of their gigs. At this point in time Hole was without a bassist and needed one for their upcoming European Tour in 1993. Erlandson would tell Spin Magazine “I found Kristen in L.A. and said, “Come with me to meet Courtney [Love] and Patty [Schemel] when you get to Seattle.” She joined the band, she moved to Seattle, and that’s when all the songs came to life, literally. She was the star of her band and so she was bringing that to Hole and that created sparks in everybody; we all saw an even greater potential than before. Patty Schemel (pronounced at 0:20 mark here • Hole drummer Patty Sch... ) would add to Spin “Her playing was heavy, and she was knowledgeable, and she had command of her instrument. When she played, that was it: We knew.”
It was during that European tour that the band debuted material that was going to make their next record and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Sean Slade who worked on Hole’s second record Live Through This as an engineer and producer would recall to spin how once he heard the demos from the band he noticed that with the addition of Pfaff the band sounded more musical. The band would travel to Atlanta in October of 1993 to record the album.
Jim Merlis, a rep from Geffen Records, the band’s label would tell the buffalo news “"Kristen was really excited about making a record with Hole. She was so enthusiastic. She couldn't wait to start touring."
It was during the recording sessions for live through this that Erlandson and Pfaff were involved in a romantic relationship. In the book It was also speculated that peer pressure from her bandmates and friends in seattle led her to start using heroin.
Schemel would tell Spin: Kristen became Eric’s girlfriend, so they were tight. … Then there was me and my addiction with alcohol and drugs. Kristen and I would get together, and we were always trying to keep the amount of drugs we were doing secret. “Don’t tell Eric.” There were so many secrets. We were all frustrated, and we all had a lot of downtime. And so to deal with that, there was a lot of “hanging out.” I was frustrated. I wanted to play. I wanted to record. Erlandson would add in the same interview that during the making of the album he and Pfafff had broken up and there was noticable tension while recording the album
But it wasn’t just Erlandson and Pfaff who had tension between them as the bassist started to butt heads with frontwoman Courtney Love. Pfaff while new to the band was outspoken about musical ideas and that apparently rubbed Courtney Love the wrong way. Another factor contributing to Love’s resentment towards Pfaff at least according to the book Love and Death the murder of Kurt Cobain, was that the bassist had

Kristen was a few years younger than me. We went to Boston College together. My roommate dated her for a while. I was a bartender at SPIT and she’d hang out and we’d talk music. A lovely, quiet young woman as I remember. It wasn’t until the late 90s that I made the connection - gone too soon. RIP Kristen.

@@enns5366 That's a really simplistic way of looking at it. Kurt had a raging heroin addiction that he didn't want to stop. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders and didn't want to be in his band anymore. Kristen was a recovering addict. She had been clean for a month (and had been previously hospitalized because of her addiction) and then unfortunately it sounds like she wanted one last hit and forgot that her tolerance levels had changed. That's usually why ODs happen.

Look into Courtneys father and maybe while your at it look into Grohls family too and don't get me started on Corgan. You talk like you know things but you just regurgitate the party line you saw in a video. I ain't saying anything for sure but you can't just go they were drug addicts. Kurt had so many drugs in his system at the time of death there was no way he could of lifted a shotgun. Sorry dude but that FACT alone makes the entire story suspect. @@palehorse1111 Yeah, it's a sweet story to imagine- Kurt crashes with Duff McKagan (they were on the same plane going from L.A. to Seattle, and to hear Duff tell it, Duff and a friend were about to ask Kurt to hang out with them) and doesn't go back to his house that night. Later, he uses those mysterious plane tickets to take himself, Frances, and someone else (maybe one of their household help, maybe another friend; the point is that there was a third ticket) to Minneapolis. The divorce goes through, and he gets custody of Frances. He becomes the "rock Johnny Cash" he had talked about. Kristen plays with Janitor Joe among other projects (including with Kurt), where she was happy and healthy. Best of all, Frances grows up with a sweet stepmom.

Even if there was no intentional foul play (sending Erlandson to Kristen with heroin when Kristen didn't request it, spiking the dose), Erlandson still committed a crime with no statute of limitations. Bringing heroin to a person in recovery, even if she requested "one more for the road" (did she call from a payphone while outside having a smoke?), is absolutely reprehensible. He knew perfectly well that it would trigger the jones to end all joneses, and that she would be very vulnerable after being clean for two months. He needs to man up and say what happened that night.

As an ex H addict - now clean & sober many years - this doesn't surprise me in the least. Relapse is extremely likely, after any period of sobriety. It is FAR more likely than continued, unbroken sobriety. It is common to relapse many times before staying clean...and even then, you are always susceptible. Even after being clean over 20 years, one hit would likely take you right back where you left off. What's more, is that the most common form of fatal overdose is a hit following a period of abstinence. This is because the users' tolerance will have decreased significantly- and H is a drug where the slightest miscalculation in dosage is the difference between a weak hit...or overdose → death. Seeming "happy" in the sobriety period is also common...and confusing to family members watching on when they relapse, nevertheless. It's confusing to the addict, aswell! Basically it comes down to there being a hole (forgive me, I'm aware of the blatant pun ) that nothing but the drugs fills. No matter how happy you become in sobriety, the urge to use will always be there, gnawing away at you. Like a phantom limb...but worse...it's in your very soul. It feels like being incapable of feeling "happy", even when your life is objectively wonderful! Furthermore, it is typical to type to have a clean period while moving back in with parents....and then when the recovering addict goes out for the first time...the opportunity to satiate that gnawing urge to use often rears its' head. As much as I loathe Ms Love...I see there being no direct connection to Pfaf's death. Plenty of INDIRECT contributing factors, perhaps...but nothing direct.

As much as I dislike Courtney, there's no evidence she had a hand in Kristen's demise. Kristen returned to Seattle from Europe on June 13th. She was sober but did not have a sponsor. While packing, she found her drug kit and it sent her into relapse. Her alleged dealer lived in the same neighborhood, a seven minute walk according to Google Maps. This dealer was known for mixing Coke with H, which is the drug combination that turned up in her toxicology report. Kristen no longer had the tolerance level she possessed when she was a steady user, so the amount she ingested was fatal. A common mistake with former addicts. Absolute tragedy regardless.

Don't think so. Janet said Eric called her when Kristen developed a skin infection from injecting. He wouldn't put the spotlight back on himself if the goal was to poison her in mid June. After all, Paul saw Eric the night before they were going to drive home. Too easy to pin him for a crime, but he didn't do it.

Obviously not because he didn’t ask for the drugs, she did.. she took them, so it’s obviously 100% her own doing…That like blame Ms Love.. How old are you? 50? Still talking ridiculous grunge cringe like a spotty teenager …

Not even close. This is the 1st time I’ve ever heard of this or these people but…..She got sober from heroin for x amount of time which brought her tolerance down, she apparently comes across some in the house she was packing up in Seattle, (maybe someone leave it there for her?) gets hotel/goes into bathroom to take bath, (hot bath and heroin are closely associated) she doesn’t take her lack of tolerance into consideration and unfortunately she overdosed. Happens all the time, esp to folks getting outta jail. Unfortunate as she seems pretty dope.

Yeah, the more I see stuff like this the less funny it becomes. I used to dismiss ideas about her involvement in Kurt's death . But after the Soaked in Bleach doc I began to seriously reconsider that position and the deeper one looks the stranger and shadier things seem. That's probably all I feel comfortable saying 🤣😂😂🤣

It happens, especially in the music industry with its high occurrence of drug use, mental illness, and shady/criminal elements. Only a Q-Anon moron sees conspiracy everywhere, or alludes to someone's "guilt" based on that stupidity. Are you stupid? Wait, I already know the answer to that..

A lot of talk says Courtney Love was responsible for Cobains death...

There seems to be so much information left out there that wants to connect the dots that lead back to Courtney Love in one way or another as either the instigator or the hand on the needle/trigger in the deaths of Kristen Pfaff and Kurt Cobain. Perhaps someday these dots that lead to Love will find their way to connect to the Seattle Police Dept.

Kirsten was hardly a friend of Courtney's, they banged heads together about the band's musical direction. Courtney made sure Kirstin know Hole was her band and that she was jealous of the affair with Kurt .I believe he was her friend and there was a lot of shit going around LA and Seattle at the time of grunge in the 90's.Heroin and cocaine were around all the time from bad people or just users. She was an energetic and creative girl. I think it was tragic decision to use it and she wanted to kick drugs. But it was her decision to use and she knew she shouldn't have done it but it was too late. I hope people take out of this is to stop using heroin to get high, don't buy it from street they cut it with fentanyl and you can die easily.

Under contract with a record label = she was INSURED. Just in case she perished in a rare and unfortunate accident, the label would be able to recover some of their investment. Which of coarse begs the question.... what would her exact value be as an ex-member of the group.

Both her and Kurt's cases should be reopened, both deaths are suspicious AF. But that's probably never gonna happen because the second drugs are involved in anyway authorities wash their hands of these cases asap. Tragic. Also I didn't realize she died on my 13th birthday.

The Seattle PD did just that back in 2014, and even released a bunch of photos from the crime scene. It is thought they anticipated some kind of media interest in the Cobain death since it had been 20 years, and the police department wanted to be able to answer the questions again, and probably to prove they had not slept through the entire controversy for the last two decades.
