I had been watching so many videos of things to “NOT” to do that it does scare you into not playing. I’ve been taking all the mix match paper that I have had through the years of painting..not painting cycles and I just started using it all up playing and have spent hours of just not caring about the weight of what I shouldn’t do. I feel so much better about my art and I’ve made so many gains. You were the teacher I needed when I was a little girl and I know I would have blossomed and found the drive to become an artist. Nothing wrong with discovering it in my 60’s I guess. So thank you..you make me smile every time.

I’ve been doing acrylics for countless years. For given life reasons-internal and external, I’ve dried up. Though I’ve created a lot, sold some, and others love my whimsy style-I haven’t been able to paint. I do break some rules. I have to admit, I don’t know what most are as I mostly depend on my imagination. 😂 I’ve *never* delved into watercolor. I’m doing so now to see where it leads me. Breaking watercolor *rules* seems fitting right now for me-especially entering a new medium. Thanks, Kristy!

I love your comment about your paper staying wet since you live in the nw US. I am a desert dweller and have quite the opposite experience! Yesterday I made a nice bright green using phthalo turquoise and aureolin and was pleasantly surprised when the line I painted (wet in wet) of aureolin showed up. I love the combination of DS Amazonite Genuine tipped with Magenta. And I am crazy about granulating watercolors! I am definitely excited to follow your lead and audition a variety of colors for leaves. Sometimes it's hard to let go and try the unconventional - but I'm working on it! Many thanks for your exhuberance and encouragement. Your sparkle is just what this introvert needs! You are a blessing, Kristy.

Before I started to watercolor, I just didn't see colors the way I do now... I've fallen in love with every green shade & blue/green shade they make... even before I play with them. I remember being fascinated with any new paint, while watching how it moves along the paper! Aqua Green, Winsor Newton, & Phthalos just thrill me! I went through this with blues 💙 also... then reds, you get the picture Kristy. Thank you 😊 for your encouragement to color "outside the lines" and to make art a part of joyful playtime! Love you Kristy, a California Gramma ❤

I love the idea of glazing and gave it a try on your "Better Composition" video (the yellow at the end...come on...that was AMAZING), anyway, I tended to get some hard lines at the edges of my leaves and a few blooms, not sure what I'm doing wrong. So grateful for your videos, they've opened up a much less stressful way to paint for anxious me and I'm loving it!
@KristyRice

Ahhh gosh yeah that yellow was awesome lol!! It could be that when you finished the shape, you hade too much water or a puddle on the area. Pigment will creep to the edges of a puddle and dry as a hard edge :)

i was so hesitant to try the not rinsing brush challenge, but i actually really enjoyed it! i probably will still keep rinsing for alot of my art, but theres definitely times I'm going to paint this way now. also i tried adding the different colors into leaves and I LOVE IT! so much. I'm still learning I've only been watercoloring for a bit over a year, and you're videos teach things that others don't and definitely bring the fun and freedom into it! i have never used a liner brush, i have some skinny detail brushes and some pointy round brushes i use for details that you use your liner brush for. i probably will try a liner brush and a cats tongue someday though since i love buying new art supplies!

I have question with regard to Daniel Smith water color. I see that it comes both in tubes and in palettes where the paint is already in the half pans. Is there still a big difference in the paint even though they are both the Daniel Smith brand? Is there still some huge advantage with the tube paints? Thanks so much for your input
@KristyRice

Great question. In general I find that pre-manufactured half pans have more fillers in them so they are more stable for transit etc. I personally almost always squeeze tube pigment into half pans creating my own sets :)

So I'm new to watercolor painting, so I went kinda cheap on the paints and paper i guess because i feel like it does make a difference in the quality of the picture is there anything i can do to make the best of the materials I have until I feel like ok I need to put more money into this new venture I'm trying? I question myself like maybe I'm not going to want to paint maybe I want to sketch or maybe I want to scrap book or mixed media idk I'm lost lol HELP
@KristyRice
@KristyRice 2 жыл бұрын
Use what you have... just knowing whatever frustration you might feel along the way is intensified by lower quality supplies. This isn't me being critical but me reminding you to be kind to yourself as you experiment! Sure your paper might pill a little or buckle but you can still enjoy the explosions of color. One last suggestion. Use up the low quality paper quickly. Work fast and experience the pigments with passion. You'll learn a ton and then can level up to better paper sooner, its a win win! Good paper is far more important that anything else :)
