Olifants is a peaceful rest camp in the middle of the Kruger National Park. If you head south in the direction of Satara you can see a variety of game from this camp, but if you head north in the direction of Letaba you may not be as lucky. That being said, wherever you are in Kruger is a good place to be and look for wildlife because the animals move around and you never know what you may see. Look for elephants and lions near this camp, as well as leopards in the koppies. We were very surprised to even see cheetahs in the hills near the camp many years ago as these cats generally prefer open grasslands. Birding is good. The camp is a great spot to visit in the summer months when you can view thunderstorms rolling in across the savannah. The camp has beautiful vistas over the bushveld and Olifants River which is the largest river in the Kruger National Park. You can see Red-winged Starlings, Yellow-billed Hornbills, Starlings, Brown-Headed Parrots and other birds in the camp. Look for vultures and Tawny Eagles when you are on your game drives. There are couple of viewpoints near the camp where you may alight from your car at your own risk and look out over rivers and the bushveld. These are good spots to see hippos and elephants. The area is scenic and hilly near the camp and in the north, whilst south of the camp tends to be characterized by grasslands. Be sure to check out the Ngotso Waterholes and Timbavati Road.
