The glass catfish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis) is an aquarium fish of the catfish family that naturally inhabits the waters of Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, and the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Its habitats are large rivers, it often crosses into flooded fields. Glass catfish are organized into schools of up to 100 individuals.
The most characteristic feature of this species is that it is almost transparent (it is the most transparent of all the fish in the world) and the skeleton and abdominal organs can be seen, which especially attracts many aquarists. It reaches a length of up to 15 cm.
In nature, glass catfish feed on water bugs and smaller fish, but also worms, crustaceans and insects. In aquarium conditions, it is oriented towards live food, such as white worms, tubifex or daphnia, although it also accepts dry and frozen food.
This is a peaceful fish that requires company, so it is not suitable to be kept in an aquarium where there are very active fish, but to keep several individuals of its species. Also, it requires a lot of space to hide in the aquarium, so an aquarium with a lot of plants is suitable for this reason. That being said, lower lighting is good for these fish. The water should be weakly basic and not too hard. The temperature of the water should be around 24ºC.
