Dark Skin Photography Tips for Beginner Photographers | How to Photograph Dark Skin Tones
A lot of photographers are struggling with taking pictures of dark skin tones and often avoid working with people of color altogether.
I'm here to educate you because I can't hear another story of my clients complaining that another photographer told them "it's challenging to find a good light for you" or made them look ashy, orange, too dark, or too light. This is not professional, and I'm on a mission to make it right!
If you're not sure what settings to use or how to lighten dark skin - watch this video!
I moved to the US from Russia 8 years ago and within my first year started working with a variety of models with diverse backgrounds, and it turned out that I was one of the few photographers who could capture beautiful portraits no matter how light or dark their skin was.
Any skin tone can look beautiful in the pictures, from dewy rich dark tones to bronze browns and porcelain fair skin - you just need to learn how to control your camera and light!
Special thanks to @terenceldavies for modeling for me

Of course! This is a no brainer for me, but I see how a lot of photographers struggle and this affects the quality of the services our industry provides and the separations that's created. Time to change that

I started travelling through Africa for the first time, even though I’m African myself, and it was very difficult to shoot dark skin tones in bright sunlights. I have always shot black people in the northern hemisphere. It took me a while to get rid of the high contrast photos I was ending up with. This video is quite helpful. Black person learning how to shoot black skins from a Russian is both amazing and hilarious to me. Big ups and thanks.

It is quite amazing! Thank you for sharing! But honestly this issue has nothing to with race, but everything to do with how camera is registering tone and how to prorotize a certain tone. Also if you can find even natural light it will make your life easier

You saved my life. I work in Guiné-Bissau where most of the people have the darkest skin tone that I ever seen. As a content creator I want to embrace and respect that and use it as part of my representation. Like you I started to work by intuition and many times I still do mistakes. That's why this video was so helpful and I definitely will check your courses

I'm taking notes for my very first photoshoot and I got a lot of information from this video. You explain everything in detail and in a way a friend would teach you something. It's a lot less intimidating than other videos where they say "do this/that" but don't explain why or what effect we're looking for. You deserve more recognition and subscribers and I hope they come to you soon. Thank you for making this video ❤️

This has been SO helpful! I will probably watch a few more times just to really soak in the information. I've done 3 events so far, VERY different lighting scenarios but all dark skin tones. First event was in an apartment rooftop loft that was surrounded by windows. Tons of ambient light all around. Second event was outdoors, an evening all-white attire party that started at sunset. I think the white tablecloths and white clothing everywhere helped me with that one LOL. And the third event was indoors, basically no natural light at all. This is when I realized that the dark skin tones really absorb that light whereas my pale self does not... because I had a photo booth set up and the ring light worked OK for me, but was absolutely lost on the dark skin. I'm thinking I need to find a stronger/brighter one for next time I'm in the same type of setting.

Thank you for creating the video. It was very helpful. Would you use a handheld meter instead of adjusting exposure with exposure compensation and if so would you meter on the shadow side or highlight side of the person skin?
@kseniaprophoto
@kseniaprophoto 2 жыл бұрын
I don't use light meter, and never will. It's uo to your artists choice whether to expose for highlights or shadows )) I normally expose for midtones and can always adjust later in post. But you choose to expose for highlights, the photos will be darker and more dramatic with less details in the shadows, if you expose for shadows- the picture will come out bringter, but you might lose some details in highlights. Again, it all depends on the light, composition and artistic choice

I want to ask people if I can take their photos or of events they are having. I live in a predominately black community and recall a picture from a friend’s birthday party where one of us blended in the background. I don’t want to over or under expose someone.

Know you camera settings, learn how to use flash and pick background wisely too. If you know how you want the photo to look like and learn the tools, it's all very intuitive

These cameras have face-recognition/registration and eye-focus. In spot-metering it can identify proper skin tone. But a light meter is the best - the LCD lies.

Before anyone accuses me of any kind of racism. I'm just saying skin that's too dark or white can be difficult. White like mine is unhealthy and burns easy. Dark skin is difficult to capture on photos etc. Maybe it will be more simple if pale and dark ppl got married and had some medium toned kids? No sun cream and easier to picture.
@kseniaprophoto
@kseniaprophoto 3 жыл бұрын
It is certainly challenging working with extremely light or extremely dark skin tones, and especially if they are together in one photo. However, it's our job as photographers to make it work and not blame the results on the way our clients look. I had photographed couples and mixed families that had extremely bad experience with other photographers who were lacking technical and communication skills and totally ruined their photos and hope to look good in the same picture. This is not ok. So please, everyone spend the time learning and practicing
