Standing tall above all those inches of snow, towers of burlap and wire stand out in front of the Van Trump family's Lee's Summit house.

They should grow some Trachys, Sabal minors or Rhapidophyllum. They are way hardier than the ones he is growing. But definitely a great job to keep Sabal palmettos alive in that climate!

Best stick with only the hardiest palms like Sabal minor and R.hystrix in that climate

Needle might survive close to the house there. Same with Sabal minor. Trachies would die without protection. Palmettos are actually more hardy than Trachycarpus under certain circumstances. the 2021 Texas freeze showed that.

@@Rocketman0407 Windmill palms in Texas generally have higher stress levels because of extreme hot, sunny summers, which I think leaves them more vulnerable in the winter Meanwhile Palmettos thrive best in hot, sunny, humid weather.

I went by there in '18, they were all dead/gone. The best way in Kansas City is to build vertical greenhouses made of scaffolding. Then put it a heater in it.

Im sure their method works! Maybe an error from the simple design. Id love to use that protection method here in idaho though as it is simple and cost effective for larger trunked and established palms.

@@brandonflores3330 100% it does not work. The only thing that works in lower zones year after year is building a tall greenhouse around it.

The Windmill Palm is one but it needs to be wrapped and have lights (or heat wires) put around it in the winter. A Sago Palm is the right way to go if you like cycads and want a some sort of tropical palm outside. The most common one in Michigan is a aloe Vera palm, it needs no wrappings in the winter. An indoor Palm is a Majesty Palm, it has broad green leaves with some sort of blue color underneath the fronds. The most common house palm is the Parlor Palm, it does NOT like sunlight and likes tight spaces. All of th indoor Palms need to be watered every 2 weeks with very good drainage. I hope this helped. - Dragon

@@kevinlong7515 no not a sago, i would recommend a Needle Palm which would need no wrappings in the winter in Clawson Michigan due to being tolerant to hardiness zone 5. A Windmill Palm, is hardy without wrappings or wires to zone 7. They do not do well in Michigan.
