KSP Land Speed Record - Breaking Escape Velocity [Part 3]

Күн бұрын

When I reached orbital velocity with a land speeder, I thought I had just about reached the limit of the stock game. Beyond that speed, the ground-loading bug was simply unavoidable (Check out my forum post here for more info:forum.kerbalspa...)
However, it turns out there is a way to increase the speed at which this bug occurs by decreasing the terrain detail from "High" to "Normal". This means, of course, we can go even faster!
Special thanks to forum user "suicidejunkie" for suggesting this. If it weren't for them, this video would not exist!

The distance between KSC and north pole is around 942 km and the distance traveled by speeder is 109 km. So Jonathan is right.

Sorry if it wasn't as funny for you as it was for me.

Obviously an amazing record, but also the editing was done pretty well. The music and scenes were matched up fairly well in the cinematic section part and I really liked how one pulled out from the engine exhaust (unless that's the Sun?) to see the super heated plane. And then to end up at the edge of the ice sheet near the end like that, have a dramatic 'end of the road' like effect. Quite enjoyable to watch overall and I hope it didn't take all to horrifyingly long to put together.

Let's do some math: The rover accelerated from an instantaneous speed of 0 m/s at 4:59:33 on the clock at the top left of the screen, to an instantaneous peak speed of 3,468 m/s at 5:0:21 on the clock at the top left of the screen. Meaning that the poor Kerbal on the inside was enduring an average of 7.36745 G's for about 48 seconds. HOWEVER, at 5:00:16 on the clock, you do RAPID acceleration from from 2280 m/s to 3568 m/s at 5:0:21 on the clock. Meaning you killed your kerbal by putting him under *24.22846* G's for 5 seconds straight! Even the worlds best trained pilots would be killed from these forces, as all the blood in their body.. and organs and everything else, is pulled down to their feet. No amount of breathing exercises and flexing is going to mitigate this damage

What are kerbals even made of that they can withstand 100+ g's of deceleration? If it is their pilot seat helping them decelerate, I'd love to see how that magic works. Excellent video by the way

I'm going to say that's likely not possible. For a challenge like this, you need to clip the seperatrons into the fairing to reach these speeds because they create stupid amounts of drag otherwise. Without part clipping, the only engine you can use is the vector, and its TWR isn't good enough to reach escape velocity without exploding. Orbital velocity should be possible, but I'm not so sure about escape velocity. Plus, you have to clip the fairings or else they would chain to a ridiculous length and create a drag induced moment too large to counter with gimbal or control surfaces. Honestly, I think part clipping like what I have done is okay. I'm not clipping engines or fuel tanks into each other to increase the density of the craft and help it go faster, I'm mainly clipping structural parts (Such as stacking fairings, or clipping seperatrons through the fairing). Its in the same vein as clipping a battery into a truss, or making a cowling for engine with a fairing. In the end, since there isn't a definitive rulebook on stock land speed records, Its up to personal opinion. I think reasonable part clipping adds so much to the game and makes for a much more interesting solution.

OOH OOH It might be a collab with Matt Lowne. He made a short film series called Expedition: Eve, and near the end went heavier into editing and effects to make sort of a sci-fi thriller. The imgur link was a thumbnail for one of Stratzenblitz's Eve missions.
