Hello friends! This week I'll be trying out the new DLC part by taking a prop-powered craft to the purple planet! The aircraft itself was very inspired by the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, in case it wasn't obvious :P

@weasle2904
@weasle2904 5 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the attention that SSTO designs get... Realistically, they're not that great. Using conventional rocket technology, it just means taking all the extra useless weight in empty tanks, and possibly different types of engines and propulsion systems. The price saved in reuseable is ruined by the limited potential all the extra weight causes. Especially since, with modern rockets, we're perfectly capable of recovering and reusing spent stages (SpaceX)
@danielr8257
@danielr8257 5 жыл бұрын
@@weasle2904 SSTOs can be more efficient since the ascent uses atmospheric engines and if you use solely nuclear engines on the orbit stage, since you don't need to carry oxidizer and the specific impulse is much higher than it would be on a regular rocket, saving money on fuel and possibly sacrificing some range (though staging off some empty fuel tanks would still probably be better and the savings are questionable) also they appeal to our unsophisticated monkey brains (almost all space video games and movies use single-stage spacecrafts (that also resemble planes in some way))
@weasle2904
@weasle2904 5 жыл бұрын
@@danielr8257 Nuclear engines are considered conventional technology. Doesn't improve the argument, in fact SSTOs due to their worse payload capacity would likely work worse with nuclear engines due to the high weight. Recovering all stages in a shuttle style orbit vehicle would be the best as it's the most efficient. Which is exactly what Starship is.
@danielr8257
@danielr8257 5 жыл бұрын
@@weasle2904 I was pointing out how an SSTO could be more fuel and money efficient. Also, in KSP, SSTOs can be better because it's harder to recover spent stages in KSP. The SSTO concept does not specify that you don't use nuclear engines.

A month late. But maybe someone will see this? You can bind more to the action buttons. In fact, to make the most effective plan, you kinda need to. The only flyable fixed-wing prop I made, I had to bind the RPM limit to the throttle. I also set the props to deploy and toggled the authority limit through U/D translate controls, which offers better speed control at different altitudes.

Another tip: map the propeller authority to another axis if you have it (HOTAS) so you can control the prop pitch more precisely. You can adjust the pitch on the fly to squeeze more speed out as you accelerate. This is how real props work. Similar to the U/D tip above but more control. You can use the aero overlay to visually see the effect this has.

I’m working on this personally, it’s really difficult to pull off but after successfully managing an Eve plane and sending it all the way there I’ve been experimenting with flying on Duna. I’ve found it requires much more micromanaging of the propeller angle (in my case using an axis group) then a plane on Kerbin, and 75* seems to work better than the typical 60* on Kerbin. Lift is also difficult, but I’ve found a biplane configuration works quite well. Unfortunately, so far simply getting enough atmosphere is really difficult since it’s so thin, even in the lowlands I’ve only been able to manage small hops at 40-50m/s with a maximum altitude of 20m and maximum distance of 500m. I think ducted fans may be the answer as propellers just don’t get enough air.

I think I might still use them, and it is actually because of eve, since reaction wheels generate a small fraction of the body torque, and that means you can use smaller and lighter 1 engine planes that fit behind a 10m heatshield. They are also much more energy efficient, you can run >20 reaction wheels with 8 RTG's. Now the actual propeller blades look very interesting

@@alspezial2747 you can either put a SAS capable probe core in the rotor and engage it to stop the rotor from spinning, or you can also set the blades "deployed" position to one that generates no thrust, this works regardless of the speed of the motor.

I built an Eve plane myself the other day, it was a really fun mission and it flies great, and the propellers just look so cool! The re-entry was a mess as always as Eve’s atmosphere sucks SO MUCH, but I eventually made it on attempt 17. Unfortunately then I realised I’d forgotten the parachutes, which could’ve been a massive disaster, but luckily Eve’s atmosphere is good for slowing down, and when I was down to 400m/s I just decoupled everything which was instant and without a hitch, then dived down with the plane and simply flew to the ground and landed safely. It was totally unexpected, my original plan was a parachute landing but this was way more fun and very lucky that it worked. The main difference between our designs is that I had enough solar panels for constant flight, smaller engines to reduce power usage and keep similar speed, and an RTG to keep the probe core and reaction wheel running at night. I also used Axis and Action groups to have full control of all the main engine and propeller variables which helped a lot, plus triple the battery power. I also used a twin engine design though to avoid the torque and rolling issues that propellers tend to have.

If you place larger landing gear as the mains and smaller landing gear as the tail-wheel you'll have an aircraft more suited for landing in rough terrain. It protects the propellers and provides a high angle of attack for approach that allows you to land extremely slowly. Food-for-thought.

I would like to point out due to the nature of how orbits work, any planet that is on a smaller orbit would be "behind Kerbin" just that ratio of Kerbin and Moho's orbits is large enough that it's so far behind that it's "ahead" so to speak. For those that don't know and I imagine most people here will, the smaller the orbit around a gravitational body, the faster the object moves, so if you're coming from a slower orbit trying to intercept a faster orbiting body you need to start your transfer before that body gets to you because it's moving faster. Moho is far enough in though that completes an orbit during the transfer, so you are actually launching with it behind you -250 ish degrees), it just orbits fast enough to come back around by the time you get there, creating the "it's ahead". So while technically it's Ahead of Kerbin angularly, it's actually behind from the orbital perspective. Likewise transferring to any body that is in a larger orbit around Kerbol, you leave with it ahead of you, because you're moving faster than the body you're intercepting. Just wanted to share the thought. When matt said Eve was the only exception my immediate thought was "well yes, and no at the same time." So there is a useless explanation to something that doesn't matter lol
@eekee6034

Every time I see a video on Eve, I worry about my first Eve mission which is en route without any heat shields at all. The plan is to make the gentlest entry possible, using the rhino-powered transfer stage to kill off speed where necessary, then when its fuel is depleted, release the very light-weight and relatively large-winged solar drone plane to fly the rest of the way. The real problem is the worry which has slowly built up over the many months this mission has been en route; fast-forwarding interrupted while I work on other complex plans. It's not really a good way to play the game, although it is pretty cool to see a degree of busyness in the tracking station. Once, there were even enough vessels in the same place that the game's overwhelming sense of desolation and emptyness was diminished. It really felt like colonizing the star system had begun. :)

Now I want to see someone make a flying rover like the NASA planned Dragonfly mission to Titan in KSP. If your not aware of this mission, here's the scoop. NASA plans to send a flying drone to Titan somewhere around 2026, I think. The drone will have 8 rotors, a full suit of sensors and scientific instruments, be RTG powered, and is supposed to be about the size of the curiosity rover. Its basically a small car sized remote control camera drone. I believe the drone is expected to last for 2-3 years, baring any accidents or malfunctions. Because of Titans denser atmosphere, flying around is much more efficient than trying to navigate the rather rough and unpredictable ground conditions. Iv made unkerbaled electric rotor craft using mods that could do what Matt was doing here, basically gliders and planes, but I am horrible with planes in KSP and they take hours of trial and error to get right for me. VTOL craft are a hundred times worse and I try to avoid them like the plague to my sanity that they are.

Another way I discovered to bring heavy payloads on Eve is to build a lifting body with wing parts, kinda like the belly of a space shuttle. It works like a charm, no heat shield is even needed, works either if you are coming at orbital speed or slower. Just make sure to balance it right so it naturally keeps the lifting body towards the front or at an angle to slow down progressively, if necessary use ore container as balancing factor. I recently brang a big rover (drilling/ISRU) to refuel landed ships on Eve as a precursor to a crewed mission, it worked on the first try ! I of course added parachutes to the payload, and once detached, the lifting body was so well designed that it landed next to my payload intact ! (Eve atmosphere is so helping).

on Duna you need 4 times more lift and prop force than you do on Kerbin, so regular propellers and wings simply won't work unless you have a lot more. Using the helicopter rotors as propellers may work (similar to an Osprey), but either way you need a fairly big aircraft to fly on Duna

I can imagine the guy at mission control freaking out and firing Matt for designing this stupid rocket while the plane spins in Eve’s atmosphere. Kinda like Door Monster’s KSP sketches.

the heat shields flip out because they're clipping and you're tumbling because the rear of the plane is facing forward which is where most of the drag is going to be since all of the symmetrical heat shields cancel each other's drag out

Bit late on the comment, maybe someone will read. Easy mode entry to Eve can be accomplished by putting the plane into a massive fairing at take off from Kerbin, and keep it in it. I put your plane into a fairing like this and was able to get to Eve surface first time

Idea: Hybrid rocket and propeller plane for reaching other planets and flying on them. If the atmospheres are too thin for propeller flight, then use the rockets for that.

To land planes on Eve I use a burn above the atmosphere to slow down quite a bit below orbital speed and I find it pretty easy to glide down with large craft, not sure if you considered that.

I feel like you could've just made folding wings that would fit Inside of a fairing, which you could then dive into the atmosphere, deploy chutes, slow down your descent, then open the fairing and drop payload... Which would hopefully glide in a controllable manner, or at least good enough for you to be able to go from gliding straight down... Um... "Falling with style", to level flight
