I've seen many vanlife videos of travels in Mexico, mainly about Baja - it looks idyllic in parts and they say some of the locals are friendly and welcoming. It seems to be so desirable for a lot of young people, like a rite of passage to visit Mexico. And some go back again and again. Personally I would not want to go to a country where so many of it's residents are desperate to leave. I'm Australian and my heart hurts for the families of these three young men.

As a traveler to over 50 countries I shun all-inclusive resorts.... but if I were to ever do so Mexico / Central America would be one place I would. Those gated fences won't protect you from everything but at least I could hope so.

Yes, a very sad story. These men were in their prime, enjoying life and met death in a tragic way. I will remember them and their families in my prayers. I spent my summers as a kid and teenager with my maternal grandparents in Sonora, Mexico. Those were great times but now, Sonora, too is run by the cartel and is no longer a safe place to visit.

I was visiting my brother in San Diego 41 years ago. We took the train over the border to spend a day in Tijuana. It was the worst trip ever. The place was dirty and loaded with small children trying to pick pocket you. Shop owner's very aggressive and the cab driver's trying to rip you off. I refused to eat or drink anything because the bathrooms were filthy everywhere you tried to go. I wouldn't to any resort because they don't care about your safety and it's too dangerous to go off property. There are so many other places with gorgeous beaches to go then Mexico.

Back then we’d cross into Tijuana and I’d buy chiclets gum from wee children on streets. And they made such beautiful handbags and pottery, so cheap w American $. The further south we drove, the bluer and warmer the water became. People used to say they’d retire in Mexico and live like a king. I think that sentiment is long gone now. Its unfortunate it’s this way, I have many lovely Hispanic friends, some originally immigrated to US

My story is similar to yours, RubinMendoza. I was born and raised in L.A. & went across the border many times with my Hispanic family but I haven't been there in 20+ years and have no intention of ever returning. As you say, '....it's not worth risking your life'.

We did the same thing (Sea of Cortez) maybe 4 times between 1980-1990. Had car issues, and the locals were extremely helpful and charged us fair prices--they could have taken advantage of our desperate situation. Very positive interactions down there.

There are few places on earth that are safe for a female solo backpacker. Not trying to be rude. Just keeping it real. Very few places are safe for a man, for that matter. Even in the US, places like the AT (have hiked much of it), the PCT (have hiked a little of it), many National Parks (hiked in Denali, Yellowstone, Yosemite, and others), etc., are not totally safe to hike solo. You might be fine. But why risk it? The minute you as a solo woman have a backpack on your back, especially in a 3rd World Country, you are telling people 1) you are sleeping outside, 2) that you have money on your body, 3) you are sleeping alone, and 4) you will be trekking into areas where no one can hear you scream.

It took Black travelers through 66, showing where to stay, where not to, etc. so that Black folks could make the whole journey safe (many died who didn’t have the green book) I think it’s about time someone write a book like this about the SD/Tijuana/Baja CA areas. Like a local who knows area well, the known unsafe, safer places.
