A quick trick to try in case your 1190 adventure doesn't want to start in the mornings when is close to 0 degrees C.
It worked like a charm!

NOTE:
This was an emergency situation. I improvised and it worked. The issue is that the Starter motor for the 1190 model is too small for the compression and it struggles when cold.
I read on many forums that people have been replacing the original with the subsequent models or the one fitted on the 1290 super duke.

Hahaha nice hack. The trouble is you have the starter motor mitsua model SM17, if you put the SM13, the same than 1290, the problem is gone 👍🏾

I regularly start my 1190 adventure at 0-5 degrees C without issue. If the battery is not ‘fresh’ then it loses the capacity to send enough current to the starter in cold temp. Another all that is required is to warm up the battery first, usually putting on the lights on the bike for 5 mins beforehand will do the trick.

Hi riders, I have the same problem on 990 adv in subzero temperature. Problem is not in starter / ECU / temperature sender / battery or SW. The cause of problem is too stiff engine oil for this weather condition. Starter turning speed is not enough. If you take a look in user manual, you'll see that manufacturer recommeds to use engine oil 5W40 for subzero temperatures. (normally the oil 10W50 is recommended)

I think you’re right. Strong battery just not enough speed on the crank.

Pretty old video but I have both a 990 and and 1090 and live in Canada. Neither bike particularly like cold temps to start, but then, they are designed to run from 8c to 45c temps so it should not surprise anybody. We snowmobile as well in the winter and the old trick was to always carry a hair dryer in your travel bag (even for you bald guys) Hair dryer can make sleds run at -40c that don't want to start. Way better way to go than pouring warm water on an engine.

Didn't really have an hair dryer with me...but yeah. indeed a lot of people in canada use those hot air blower to warm up their shed, for the vehicle to start in really cold days. :)

If you have the first year or two production model the starters were recalled and given more powerful ones.

I had the same problem with my 2013 1190, while travelling went through temperatures between -1and 5 C, my battery was an acid battery, Isimply jump started with a lithum battery and on my way.

Mitsuba sm17 starter problem. Magnets detached and shattered.

Yes you may be right. The hot water may have touched one of the sensors and you crippled the ECU dude...

How about starting it at -5 ? My 99 Transalp starts at -20 instantly. Modern bikes are shittier than old ones....

Andrew M cannot completely agree with you mate, but I see what you are coming from. I ve always ridden 1990, 1992, 1994 and even older bikes, while living in North of Milan (I had several Moto Guzzi and Ducati from the 70s too). If you leave the bike outside in cold temp the bike won't start, most of the times. If you leave the bike sitting, without running it every day, the carburetor gets dirty, the new gasoline dries the fuel hose constantly. If you are not careful with the choke, the bike gets flooded and it won't start. I actually had more issues with old bikes than with this bike that has 6 CPUs that control every little aspects of it. It s known though that ktm has a problem with the starter in very cold temperatures. Although this was the only time that happened to me in my whole trip.

Hola Paolo, I've read all comments and I have the same problem with my 1050, changed battery, checked sensors, someone mentioned it could be valve adjustment, is there a real documented fix for this problem? I mean I don't think pouring hot water is the best solution. Thanks to anyone that can help me out, haven't been able to use my bike in over 6 weeks. Best, Oliver

Hey Oliver. Yes, absolutely, the hot water trick is not the best, but It saved me while stuck at -5 degrees in Ushuaia. The fix is out there. Apparently is the starter motor. On the 1290 super duke, they have upgraded the started model and it seems it fixes the issue. It's the same size so I read people buying a used/cheap 1290 duke starter and fitting it in their 1190, and voilà! I hope this helped. I banged my head quite few times myself about this. The issue happens only when it's really cold though, so I struggled only a couple of times fortunately. I hope this helps.

Hola Oliver, tu motor de arranque debe ser el mitsua modelo sm17. Es el que se instalaba en los modelos 2013/14 y algunos 2015, hasta que se reemplazó por el modelo SM13, el mismo de las 1290. Si lo cambias el problema estará resuelto. Saludos desde Chile.

One possibility is that your battery is on the way out. Cold batteries don't perform well, but maybe the hot water gave it enough of a jolt to improve the output... I could be wrong though. Safe travels!

hmm the cold start issue was supposedly the shitty starter's that KTM refuse to replace. my bike sits in the garage so i put a heater on to get her over 7 degrees (the magic number) either way its the one issue i have with the bike...the only adventure bike that cant be used in cold weather :)

Baz Lofthouse thanks baz for your feedback. It s interesting that a bike manufactured in Austria suffers of these kind problems. I think the starter may have some design flaws but overall this was the only time I had a problem starting it. Somehow in other occasions I managed to turn it on, just insisting a bit. Thanks anyway for your tip.
