Your candid observations and comparisons are immensely valuable - FAR more useful than from typical 'reviewers' (who fear offending manufacturers who provide their video 'content'?). Your willingness to filter out the marketing bling is much appreciated, too. I thoroughly enjoy your (very experienced) riding guidance, as well. THANK you - VERY much.

Excellent engine and gearbox in this bike. I've been very impressed with my Duke's. There's an American has an off-road channel on here. He rides a 390 Adventure. It's been totally reliable and he hammers it. I agree with your summary. It isn't the best bike to bimble around backlanes. It likes to go faster.

Amazing tutorial video, mostly because the trails and the drops where not in chosen spots. I'd watched some video about how to recover a dropped bike lying on a climb with the front wheeel up but here, it showed how to do it the real way, when you've not planned the situation. it's also it's a great reality check about what weekend lane riding is like in England, and that's not what the mid and large displacement adv bikes I fancy are built for. About the bike, it feels you're properly doing it justice, and I should probably buy it. As a fairly new rider after a year on my current heavy and farly tall (for me) NC750X, the seath height its probably now manageable on my urban commute and I feel I have now enough bike control to be a decent off road riding beginner. Enlightning, many many thanks for that.

This is THE Definitive KTM 390 Adventure video. All the questions that many of us have had about the KTM vs the competion are answered. I've got an 890 S model, a KLR 650 (Gen 2), and a KLX 300. I'm going to sell the KLR and the KLX hasn't always been fun on the road, though excellent on the trails. I have to ride pretty good freeway miles to get to decent trail riding. So I've wondered, should I get a 390 Adventure in place of the KLX 300? I should trade it for the 390 under my situation. or just add a 390 to the stable. ;) With the 2023 models coming out some of the dealers have knocked off almost $1000 off the usual price. BTW, if I'd tried to take that hill, in those conditions on my 890 S model, it would have been far more difficult to get myself out of that situation. I have to muscle it around to get the 890 through a narrow space between cottages to my lady's back yard as I don't want to park it on the street. It is a tussle to manhandle it for that 30 feet on a brick walkway and through the gate. Would be far worse in the wild.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman Жыл бұрын
Thanks Pinkie. Yes a bigger bike in that situation would have been a bit of a disaster. All the techniques about how to lift a heavy bike go out the window when you're on a steep muddy slope. Then it's just about brute strength, and the lighter the bike the better. Had I been on my old GS1200 I would never have lifted it over itself so would have had to drag it all the way around. Not easy. I'd say the 390 would be a good option for you; more useable than the 890 and far more refined and capable on the road than the KLR and I would say about as manageable on the trails as well. Obviously the KLX is going to be the ideal trail bike, but for the road.... harder work.

@@nathanthepostman Thank you for the reply Nathan. You’ve definitely shown the versatility of the 390! I also see the advantage you mentioned about fixing a puncture on the cast wheeled version. The steep lane where you fell is Cutliffe lane, as you say, used on the Lands End. As an added bonus in the dark for the first 100 bikes or so.....😳 The last lane, as you mentioned is also a Trial hill, known as Wargery, used in the opposite direction.

Hi Nathan, Just want you to know I bought a bike recently after watching your videos. I intend doing rides like LEJOG so I’m back on 2 wheels with a CBX 500. I have no intention of riding it on off road, but having watched your £1,000 challenge I’m seriously thinking of getting an old wreck to get dirty. I live in North Devon not far from you and loved green laning when I was a teenager. Back then we could also ride all over Codden Hill without getting in too much trouble. Love watching your videos. What a charmed life you lead. Keep it up!

Cheers Rob. Hope you're getting on with the CB alright. You can still take the trail up to Codden Hill but no longer go through the gates. There are some superb lanes that side of Barnstaple, a few of them CB friendly. I'll have to show you some of them sometime.

I've probably spent a little too much on upgrades on mine, but now got Big Block tires, akro exhaust, motourenn footpegs, motard crash cage, new handguards... But decided I wasn't going to trade it in for something bigger and stick with it at long as it goes, as I never find it lacking really. Even the wheels...the alloys are super practical. Don't even find that it stalls all that often for me. Good value, even with a bit of upgrade tweaking.

I've just put some TKC 80s on mine. I changed them myself inspired by your tyre changing vid... It was bloody hard work trying to break the bead TBH! Only been out on them once but feel a lot more 'sure footed' on light mud & gravel (I've not tried the Essex clay yet!)... Same great grip on the road too (which surprised me). SW motech pegs coming next week, I may try rolling the bars forward. I need to lift the gear leaver a bit though, since buying some Leatt MX boots. I also need to increase the preload on the rear shock.

Good work on the diy tyre change. Did you manage it without marking the rim? Glad you're getting on well with the 80s. I see some of the guys fitting maxxis and mitas but I just think they'll ruin the road riding a bit too much. Going to order some 80s this week

@@nathanthepostman Mmm... There may be a few marks on the rim. I did use some rim guards which kinda helped... I think it was using WD40 on the bead that made the difference, It was almost as though they were glued on they were so tight. They really went back on with a POP as I pumped them up. There will be a vid at some point.

Me an dad have been thinking bout going back to ktm later in the year even after the issues we had with ours with the tfts an fly by wires, hes wained of the idea off the idea of the bigger Hondas after looking at them for a bit. Gotta love the lighter stuff. Nothing seems to have caught his eye bar them still so thinking of getting him a newun' post house move n servicing it myself for him. I think the dealers have really let them down from our experience across a few brands tbh.

Great video Nathan Firstly I'd like to apologize for my brother bending the bars, £100 sorry.😮 Secondly great to see a great experienced rider like yourself having a few offs. We've got TKC80 on the Himalayans, Mike and my brother are getting good in the mud but I still think there's no front end grip, I'm all over the place. You are right though, the mud varies so much, some there is good grip others non at all. Himi though is amazing at going up steep muddy hills, just chugs up them. Thanks Nathan, great to watch.

Would you say the extra poke of the KTM worth it over say the Scram or Himi if you were doing more road miles? I dont like the front beak myself but the KTM does have a preppy engine think the range is similar to the Himalayan. Test ride I guess. Thereotically can ride the Honda, Ktm, Himi, Scram and the xcape! P.s Def a few good options. Hard to say I do like flying around twisties but am going to be doing a lot of miles + tent so am guessing thats more a relaxed ride. Extra note, think you kinda answered my question so my choice got harder.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman Жыл бұрын
Hey Spider. Yeah the poke of the KTM is another league to the Enfields. It's an interesting comparison though to Scram and Himalayan. I would have the KTM over the Scram for certain as the Scram loses so much of the practicality of the Himalayan and then is slower and no better off road than the KTM. The Himalayan vs 390 is a tougher one as whilst the Himalayan is a long way down on power on road it would be my pick off road; bigger front wheel, more chuggable etc. But if you weren't doing tricky trails then the 390 would be a good easy decision to make.

I can't see a proper "R" version of the 390 being viable, like you say, it is already a tall bike, so to increase it's ground clearance by longer travel suspension and also a larger front wheel, it'd make it unreasonably tall. It is a shame the 490 has been shelved too. What would be nice is if they could detune an EXC500 and lower it considerably along with fitting a long range tank and proper dash with screen... it won't happen though as to do so would be too expensive, and I don't think KTM would really want to detune the engine to add reliability and increase service intervals as it goes against the "Ready to Race" ethos... be nice though, be it KTM, Beta, Honda, or whoever, but a lightweight adv with a strong but not highly strung engine would be aces.
@nathanthepostman
@nathanthepostman Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a good point that Hippo. Making the 390 into the R would make it unrideable for all but the tallest of riders. And no one would pay the cost of it either. Shame as the engine has so much potential, but maybe some knobblies on this one will do the job for now.

Reading on the KTM forums it appears that you can update the software to the bike which will change the rider modes and the traction control setting to the same as the newer 2022 model. Not sure what the dealers will charge for that tho?

Yeah I've read that the dealers can reprogramme the early bikes to keep the TC off, but only those in India. I would imagine if it was possible then it'd be all over the groups. I've just read that a couple of spacers in the ABS sensor in the back wheel also deeactive it permanently. Not ideal but might be worth it for a day on the trails.
