KTM 890 Adventure R Tank damage- does the Adventure R need extra protection?

The tank took a hit on a rock last night- is there enough inherent protection or is it worth adding 6-10kg of extra? See the impact and decide for yourselves- the jury is out!

You are happiness ! Tank damage is better than foot damage ! Surely a small mistake would have been a great body injury ! The tank is itself a body protection . The new 890 adv 2023 protection for the tank seem to be a good solution , better than a crash bar . ( crash bar protections and fixations may damage the frame ) i put out the crash bar on my 890 adv , too dangerous for the frame itself

I use a blackdog skid plate really good i would say best on the market, and use standard tank protection

Moose Racing skid plate works well (same as AXP). I broke my first one but it protected my tank fully and Moose Racing sent me a new one at no charge due to where the break occurred. I've since beat the hell out of it and it works well. Good job with the videos, keep them coming!

If I was you I would make a bumper around the whole bike with 2 inch thick steel plate and mount back up sensors around the whole thing so when you get close to something it beeps and add some curb feelers for back up

There is a good chance that bars may not have protected you from that specific pointy bit, at that specific height. Two things come to mind try not to get into the verges when there is vegetation, I was on the GWT trail and did something similar and caught my right knuckle on a hidden log ( just above the bark busters) and then my friend followed my line and did the same. We both stopped and was lucky to get away with bruises. 2nd be mindful of the width of you bike and keep your toes tucked in ( i thought I heard you say you caught your your foot). With any larger bike slow it right down when you are close to catching the sides-less damage that way. AXP baseplate has worked well for me. I enjoy your videos. Thank you . Keep them coming.

I've always looked at the tank protectors as somewhat sacrificial. You can find them online for about $30-40 and I've already ordered a second pair just in case. I like having them take the impact instead of crash bars or something more solid specifically because of the situation you found yourself in. I imagine that if something more solid had hit the side of the trail it might have knocked you over whereas the plastic of the tank and protector will deform and deflect it.

Thanks Mike and I agree with you- this was the reason I haven't gone down that route and the weight bothers me a lot! The protectors are there to do a job.

AXP is the way to go ... seriously ..love mine. It won't last forever but it's 10x more durable, thicker, and coverage. It's considerably lighter than aluminum and it slides over rocks. It's been well proven over the last 3 years since the KTM 790 Adventure came out. Tons of crashes, rock gardens etc

The trick is, don't crash these things so much. Any bike that weighs nearly 500 lbs is going to break things if it hits the ground..or at side of trail...........I mean there can be 20K invested in one of these bikes with set up..............do we really want to throw them on the ground?....Maybe a smaller bike for bashing?

I agree, though part of my challenge was wanting to learn to ride a bike like this off road. To be fair, the 890R is meant for this. I got it with the intention of not being precious about it.

On a positive note it took the worst of the impact away from your foot ! Sand and buff the tank (look up plastic polishing), bin the flimsy skid plate and just buy one you fancy. After I found sticks and stones in the bottom of my skid plate and saw how vulnerable the oil cooler was I thought about a crap flap, but decided on a new plate. It was down to the ktm powerparts item with the ally wrap around wings and the Ian Chappel plate. I went with the latter which is a high quality item, fits great and doesn't weigh much more than the standard item. It can support the bike on a center jack stand to remove both wheels and is easy to remove for service or cleaning. I treat the side covers as consumables, however I am looking at the Rade Garage heavy duty carbon covers.

I did a lot of research on this including talking to KTM mechanics and some high level riders- the plastic IS the crash protection- yes it may get scratched and marked, but it's designed for that. Thanks for watching and have fun riding.

Sorry to see the fuel tank damage, just one of those things of off-road riding I guess. AXP is definitely worth looking at. Any chance you could do a video on the bike stand, where you got it, how much and how good it is please. 👍

I have what is arguably the best skid plate out there, which is the AXP. I went down, and even with that protection I did incur a large gash on the tank. I think no matter what you put on it because it’s so big and sticks out on the sides at subject to damage.

You had ample warnings of material incursions right at the edge of the trail with a fallen tree and several earthen ledges. I am still getting used to the frontal profile of this bike as those low slung tanks are the reverse of every dirt bike I have ever ridden. Usually the bike is fairly narrow along that lower profile but the 890 is a pretty chunky girl across her tummy. All the bars in the world are only going to transmit that energy somewhere else. That hit you had square into the hillside with bars would of probably tossed you off the bike to the left but that softer tank took the hit and you barely moved. Gotta pick your poison.

Lamento el problema con el tanque. Creo que para quien considera este tipo de moto para hacer off road, lo mejor es el protector AXP. Pero vi muy pocas quejas por rotura de tanque. No es algo común. En mi 790S uso solo las protecciones originales. No quiero sumar peso.

Saludos

My pov: The skid plate will sit clearly below the center of mass of the bike and thus you won’t notice the weight difference while riding but you will notice its efficiency when you don’t pierce the tank and you don’t have fuel leaking on the exhaust... 😉

The bike comes with the aluminium bash plate as standard. I added the Touratech engine guard plate. The damage was done above the skid plate and at the top of the tank protectors. I’m looking at the AXP bash plate after some really good advice from viewers, especially now there are more rocks flying around. Thanks for watching and commenting. Alex

@@advnoobie6061 Thanks for quick feed-back. The stock bashguard for the motor it's thinner than the Powerparts version and that one has the side protection for the fuel tanks also. I myself see that as a must for a 200kg bike which is meant to crush rocks on off-roady trails. Cheers!

Robson Enduro 3 months ago bad design really. I beg to differ. The tank was designed to be exactly what it is, a very low CG fuel holding cell. The fact it acts as a crumple zone is not a bad thing but comes at the cost of less clearance in tight obstacles. Personally, I think it's kind of ingenious. Play that same thing out with a distracted driver and a bike with a normal high set tank and now all that energy is hitting his lower leg and foot peg. How does it end for this rider without the protection of that tank protecting his leg?
