Your point about there being so many more Western foreigners in Thailand compared to Malaysia is something that makes me prefer Malaysia more. I find it refreshing. I once went to Ipoh, Malaysia, which is north of Kuala Lumpur, and walked into a shop called Baby Coco that sold various flavors of coconut shakes (very refreshing on a hot day). I started chatting with the owner of the place and he asked where I was from. I told him I was from the United States and he replied, "You're the first one." I asked, "The first one today?" and he said, "No, the first one since we opened 4 months ago." 😄

Thank you for the insightful comparison between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Malaysia truly stands out as one of Southeast Asia's most captivating destinations for travelers. The country's commitment to cleanliness and the quality of its cuisine are exceptional, setting it apart from its regional counterparts. Moreover, Malaysia's proficiency in English, particularly in the workforce and education sectors, provides a significant advantage for communication and business interactions. Children here are well- guided in mastering the English language, fostering a valuable skill that extends into their professional lives. This dedication underscores Malaysia's position as a dynamic hub where cultural richness meets global connectivity.

@@BulakDek I assume you've never been to Bangkok and know nothing about it to ask that question. The oldest identifiable building in KL is the Sultan Abdul Samad building that is less than 130 years old and was of course a British colonial building, designed and built by the British, for the British. Then of course there's the Jamek Mosque, again designed and built by the British. Do you really think that's true of Bangkok? Thanks for another great take- you're looking better than ever! I love Bangkok too, except the last time I was there, we stayed in a hotel called "Dream," in Sukhumvit and within a few minutes of entering my room and opening the bathroom door, I happened to break a glass weighing machine, and they charged me an exorbitant price for it- 15,000 Baht, and they wouldn't listen to my explanation that it was badly placed to make an accident happen- spoilt my impression of the staff there, but it's the last time I'll ever stay there. On the upside, I still love visiting the floating and night markets of Bangkok. Keep having a great time!

A balance view on Thailand and Thai girls. You should have factored in the language barrier in trying to build a meaningful long term relationship. After the initial excitement, understanding and being accommodative, the reality will hit the foreigner. They will be frustrated with the cultural demands on their Thai partner and them not being able to communicate well.

KL has approx 1-2 million population, with another 3 million scattered in neighbouring cities within the Klang Valley region. Thailand has about 3 times the population and its similar between KL and Bangkok. Base on this factor alone it does affect pricing of accomodations and food, the number of cars and motorbikes, the air quality and reason for cheap street food and how accesible it is. One thing Malaysia lose to Thailand is sex industry and prostitution - hands down.

I have a similar outlook to you. It depends on what you're here for. All the rest bring similar, most men who go to Thailand do not go with their family and the glitzy night life is the biggest draw. If that's not what you're looking for and you're looking for a place to work remotely or retire in, then Malaysia would be the better choice. Language is a very big factor. The people are multi-lingual and everybody speaks English. If you're driving around, navigation apps are easy, all road signs are in roman alphabets (Malay and/or English). In Thailand, how do you plan to read the Thai characters? That alone makes life quite difficult to face everyday. One major difference is, foreigners can buy houses in Malaysia under their own name while in Thailand you cannot. Also better be careful signing any contracts you have no idea what's written. In Malaysia, all contracts are in English and you can engage laywers who all are fluent in English.

Its good to go for South Indian food because some of the highest fiber content ( which is important for gut health + overall health) are in the spices they use eg cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, cumin, fennel pepper turmeric etc etc) plus coconut and the lentils that South Indian cuisine uses. Plus its a blessing that it is still pretty cheap to get this food compared eating SI food in say New York or even next door neighbour. I've been to New York many years ago just after 9/11, I did note that its not so easy to find street food esp in Manhattan.

So far no Westerners have mentioned these 2 points: moral values and land ownership. Thailand promotes a multi billion dollar sex industry to lure tourism giving Buddhism a bad image whereas Malaysia emphasizes on the good moral values giving Islam a good image. In Malaysia, foreigners could own land and that is why I am so happy being a Singaporean to be able to buy land in Malaysia so that I could plant durians and build a bungalow and driving up to Genting Highlands is all I wanted to enjoy the fun drifting like what YS Khong does and as well as to enjoy the cool temperature and fresh air instead of facing the poor AQI in Bangkok occasionally and the crazy traffic congestion daily. (From Singapore)
@byteme9718

How does Malaysia give Islam a good image? There's supposed to be no compulsion in Islam and yet every Malay is compelled to be Muslim and if they wish to leave can be locked away for years. Three northern states even want to execute apostates. Malaysia used to be a liberal Muslim country but is now about to slip into the deep, dark abyss of conservative Islam as Wahabbism has been introduced through the back door. Malaysia is following the path of Brunei. The AQI is poor in Bangkok but the entire Klang valley is also terrible pollutes.
