In this video I put the new #woodmaxx #fm54 #FlailMower to the test against chest high fox tail weeds, button weed and rag weed. And there is even some corn stalks mixed in there also.
The Kubota bx23s is a 2020 model with around 80 hours on it.
Let me know what you guys think of the flail mower or if you have any questions about it.
Here is the link to the flail mower www.woodmaxx.com/FM-62-Flail-...
It has the Y blades installed on it.

💥 Glad you’re enjoying your new implement. I think the hammer blades would even do better for you. Those Y blades are really best for lawns. Tighten that belt tensioner. *Keep on tractoring!* 😁👍

Appears to really bunch up the grass under the rubber flap, did you ever just try to lift the mower while it is spinning? to see if it clears?

Bought the same mower with the hammer knives two years ago for my old 19 hp tractor. The salesman said it wouldn’t work on less 20 pto hp. It was fine on light to medium density grass and weeds. Have to make two passes on heavier stuff. It does grind up 1” or less diameter limbs pretty well. Never removed rear rubber skirt, it never gets plugged up there that I know of. I now run it on a 35 hp tractor with no issues.

I'd like to try the hammer knives. I think I was running it when it was too wet. If I had waited for it to dry it would have worked just fine!

How ya doing? New subscriber here. I love that flail mower! If I could go back in time, that's how I would have built my trails. It looks like it would do a much better job than a rake! - David

I can't really think of a situation where a brush hog would be better - except if I'm in an area where I know the implement is going to be beat up, I'd rather beat up a brush hog than a flail mower. I don't know.

I was considering the Woodmax unit. It appears to be well built. I went with the commercial grade BETSCO unit specifically because it has the adjustable rear discharge. Where the Woodmax has a rubber flap, the commercial Betsco has an opening panel. I am able to open up the rear discharge panel in tall weeds, and the unit expels the cut grass directly out the back. When the discharge is closed, I have the same issue you have. The extra cut grass clumps up in the unit, and hurts the cutting ability. You might be better off with hammer blades.

Good to know Mark I want to try the hammer blades out. I just posted a vid of how it works with the rubber discharge cover taken off. It did much better!

More RPMs would help a lot and it can not be wet. But crank them RPMs up it sounds way to slow and with the belts slipping is more than likely moisture from the weeds having few or from rain and 52 is to wide 48 would be better for keeping your rpm’s up .

My flail has a cover at the back that can open up where your Rubber belt is. When doing long grass like you had withg the cover closed is hopeless and clogs same as yours. Opening it up makes a world of difference and it handles the long greed grass much better. Either take off the flap or put a bar along the bottom edge so you can tie it up out the way. You'll find it works much better on the tall stuff then.

You definitely got a good one, but something just isn't right with it. That roller was so clumped up that you could see it wasn't even turning. I think I'd eliminate that back flap all together and let it breathe. The clogging is why it wasn't even cutting fully on some of the passes - you were going slow enough. Try it and see...and let us know. As far as flails in general though, I really don't know why anyone would even use a rotary cutter, as the flails do such a better finish job while taking less space and less power to run.

The reason I would choose a rotary cutter over a flail mover is reach. I have a small creek in my back yard that would like to back up to and cut as close to the edge as I can. Right now I don't have a mower for my tractor, but am researching. I have a BX23s and was considering a flail mower but based on this video, I am not convinced. With the clumping issue and poor cut quality (in my opinion), it might not suit my needs. Its a great video and the time and effort it took to produce it is very much appreciated.

you should mow at a higher setting 1st when mowing that heavy tall material. then lower your machine for a final finish.

You're clogging up because your tractor doesn't have enough PTO hp for that mower and/or you're not running at 540 rpm. A flail should pulverize the cut grass particles, you are leaving long strands of grass. The mower rotor isn't going at a fast enough to create the up draft needed.

I'm afraid I have to agree with Bee Man. I've put a lot of hours on my bush hog, cutting everything from 10" grass to 48" saplings. It gives a much cleaner cut with a single pass, and never clogs on anything. Maybe something isn't adjusted right on your flail mower--I'd be interested to see the results after you get it dialed in.
