I am a Singaporean and have lived in the UK for a very long time but have never felt at home here. I miss the food, the culture, the weather, the lifestyle. Now that my daughter is married and have a life and family of her own, I have decided it's time to pack up my bags and head home. My wife (born in PJ) and I would like to retire to Malaysia. We are in San Francisco. We figure our kids have more opportunities here in the States. Once they are grown and move out we can make the jump.

My wife is Malaysian, I'm American. We wanted to move back to Malaysia and were making plans to leave, then the pandemic hit and shut everything down. It is a very difficult decision. We came back to Malaysia after living in the UK for nearly 8 years. Like you mentioned there are some pro and cons but overall we think that we made the right decision.

Logesh , One thing I am telling you No Matter How Long You Stay Abroad , You Are AForever Foreigner. That is one of the reason Why I decided to come back and stay back from Switzerland. I don't feel home. I don't know about others but thats how i felt at that time and still ,when people ask me about staying abroad , what i can say is nice to stay as travellers but not to stay for long years. I agree with everything you said in your video. Staying almost one year in Switzerlan already made me homesick and when i get a chance to come back due to wanted to deliver my eldest late son and decided to stay back. People don't know what we go through in foreign country , they always think its beautiful and nice with the 4 Seasons ,Well All I can say is ONLY who had Experienced staying abroad for quite sometime will understand it. I too spent many years abroad and there really is no substitute for your own homeland. Generally inter-ethnic, intercultural and inter-religious relations are harmonious on a people-to-people level. It is our political system and a self-interest driven political class (across all divides) living in its own bubble, divorced from the reality of most ordinary Malaysians that is the source of many of our problems. No place is perfect, similar problems exist in the West - culture wars and hyper-capitalism have disadvantaged the most socially and economically vulnerable segments of their populations. With that said, I have a sense that you as someone who has been educated and exposed to a global worldview, I am certain you will contribute greatly to our beloved country. I welcome you back and hope we can all build a better future for all.

You don"t need a job in Malaysia. KZfaqr is a job already! You save a lot in Malaysia, cost of living - education, house, etc. Enjoy your parents & relatives while you still can. I think the best way would be to enjoy the best of both worlds! The childhood in Malaysia is definitely more balanced - so much more outdoor life & family life & friendships etc And Malaysia is definitely the better place to grow old gracefully with the warmth of sunshine/outdoors & warmth of Malaysian hospitality. Malaysia is HOME - you seem to be looking for banana trees, palm trees, Malaysian food/taste everywhere you go in US - it shows your HEART. So, it's a good decision to live in Malaysia!

Logesh reminded me of Malay idioms/peribahasa. "Hujan emas di negeri orang, hujan batu di negeri sendiri, lebih baik di negeri sendiri." In English it is "raining gold in other country, raining rock in my country, still choose to be in my country". No matter where you go or where you live at the end of the day, everyone want to return to their place that they are born. The experience and knowledge gain for traveling and living away from the place that you're born, will always sound better and amazing, but the place where you're born and grow always be special for you.

I would certainly say that life is much better in Malaysia than in many countries. I would advise you to work and save as much as possible now when you are in the US, and once you are financially sound, then plan to move back to Malaysia.

Bro, Logesh, I agree with you 100% that when we're abroad, we feel more Malaysian. That happened to me when I was studying abroad for 4 years. Don't get me wrong, I was also happy to be abroad, but it was different when we are not a citizen of that country. We will always be made to feel like a foreigner. On discrimination, well yes, every country has its own set of problems and there's no perfect multiculturalism anywhere. We all have to learn to live with one another as much as we can harmoniously. Having said this, I am intrigued that you mentioned about your children, hopefully, to be able to grow up in environment that less strained by racism. We all hope for that too and I can see some positive signs. The younger generations are less fixated with racial and cultural differences, and that's a good thing.

Hi Logesh n Rachel, I married a Turk. Even before marrying him, I knew I would be living in 2 countries, Malaysia and Turkiye. I live n work in Shah Alam, but now retired, work freelance. I go back to Istanbul for 3 months visit. Come back to Msia and work again if I want to. Then go back to Istanbul and the Black Sea region for another 3 months stay. I love the travelling. My husband works in another countries sometimes so I schedule my visit accordingly. I dont take PR or plan to give up my citizenship. I miss Msia after 3 months stay. Must balik Malaysia for the food!

Hello from Seattle! When we got married and emigrated here, we told ourselves, lets do this for 5 years and then we go back home. 23 years later, we are still here. At this moment, we're planning our next stage in life - retirement, after kids goes off to college. For us, the longer we stay, the more rooted we get. It gets harder to leave when job is good, life is good and kids are doing well in school. We just didn't want to rock the boat and carried on living. But subconsciously, we'll always be asking ourselves, when should we go home. Both places are home for us now. It's a tough decision. I'm not married to a foreigner btw. It's easier to migrate while the kids were younger. The older they becomes it would be harder for them to adapt. Depending on their personalities. I know our kids didn't want it. They love to travel back but can't imagine living there. Too hot, culture shock, miss friends, etc...

Hi Racheal and Kumar. Think about both CA. and Malaysia as homes. I have been expat for many many years now. I still maintain strong bond with my extended family and friends in Malaysia. I benefited career wise being mobile for international assignments which is add value if you are with MNCs. My children had extremely good exposure. Except the pandemic period, travelling back to Malaysia is an annual pilgrimage for us which we look forward to. My view, of course.

I am 62 years old, a retired Malaysian government servant, and my wife is also a government servant retiring in 2 years time (God permits). We have 3 grown up children (1 married and staying with us at the moment). My son is trying to find a "stable" job, and my daughter is taking her Masters in UK in September. We are doing OK I guess, and I did have thoughts of working overseas when I was in my 40s. In summary, it really, really, really depends on your lifestyle, your expectations in life, perceptions, spiritual pathway (your beliefs) etc etc. In a nutshell, I guess, I am blessed!

I lived in America for 17 yrs.We came back in 2010 after my 2 kids finished high school. The biggest draws to coming back to Malaysia for me are the affordable health care,my family,food and the weather ( Mid West winter is the worst ) The hardest thing to deal with was my kids PR status. Having been born in America to an American father they had to stay here on a visa and renewing their visa every 3 months was a nightmare. Both are working and settling overseas now but they come back to visit Malaysia which they consider their 2nd home, often. Short story,Logesh should stay in America,make lots of money,wait till the boys finish high school/ college,then come home. Meanwhile just come visit Malaysia as often as you can ( we came back almost every summer ) so Zaden n Kyren wouldnt have a huge culture shock when it's finally time to move back here. A few of my Malaysian American friends who wanted to move back here couldnt do it bc their kids just couldnt handle the heat,food and life style here. All my best wishes to the Kumaars. On a totally diff subject,yes Logesh I agree,Crocs are expensive and the ugliest shoes.Wouldnt be caught dead wearing them unless I was wading in flood water 😃

The old saying... Home is where the heart is.... as long as you regard Malaysia as your home, definitely a great decision to return! There are people who don't regard their birth country as home, so it's easy for them to decide to stay put where they migrated to. But you already knew deep down you cannot take the Malaysia out of your heart though the physical being is not there at the moment. Support your decisions as I'm sure you know what's best for you and your family (and of course your parents will be over the moon when you come back). Hope to see you around then!

The thoughts of me after watching this vlog, as a Malaysian staying in Taiwan for about 9 years, I couldn't find any excuses to abandon my Malaysian Passport.

I'm Malaysian and my personal, humble opinion is that, stay put in the USA. Your kids' work in the future there will be much more significant and has so much more lasting impact to humanity as a whole.

My family and I moved to New Zealand a few years back but we had to come back when my youngest child was born with health complications. We came back because we had troubles coping with working, supporting and taking care of the kids without help from our families. We left our comfort zones to move away, I went from being a GM in my company to carrying parcels for a courier company and a part time cook in a restaurant. Would I do it again? Absolutely. The perks of living in NZ are numerous, great healthcare (my boy's birth and ICU were all taken care of by the state), free education and incredibly beautiful landscapes to visit. Food wasn't a big problem because I can cook and Asian grocery stores are plentiful. But as a family with 3 very young children, it did feel very lonely at times but it did bond us closer together. We had to regroup when we came back to Malaysia, and I was almost 50 by then. I worked for a year in Malaysia before giving up my job and becoming a dad full-time. After my time in NZ I just didn't appreciate the politics and meetings as much as I did before. My wife still works. For your case, here's what I would advise. Don't come here and look for a job. It might be better to come back and apply for MM2H for Rachel, or maybe you can start a business here. I don't think you will like the work culture here in Malaysia unless you are very lucky. Education for the kids has never been easier as there are tons of private schools ( offering IGCSE and American high school accreditation) to shop around. Home schooling is also becoming popular now. I have one daughter in private school, one more goes to a Malaysian public school and my son is still in kindy. Just sharing some of my experiences and I do wish you and your family all the best. Keep up the good work!

Frankly, 11 years is a long time. You have settled down nicely there. Your kids are exposed to the American system and way of life. You are in sunny California..no different from Malaysia. You have a secure job there. Life in Malaysia post-pandemic is not the same as those glory years of stability. I don't think both of you can adapt to the changes here, economically, socially and culturally. You must also think what's the future holds for your kids in Malaysia. Are you both brave enough to test your kids' preseverance in Malaysia public schools or international schools here? If you put them into international schools here, so what's the point of living in Malaysia? How about citizenships? Any shifts you foresee in America's stance on dual citizenship(especially your wife). You came back on short stays to visit Malaysia...and the feeling is not going to be the same if you come back for good now. Short stays tend to bring back nostalgic emotions that over ride your judgements and commitments. Ringgit is getting weaker. And you folks will be comfortable with your USD savings..awhile. Maybe after you are close to retirement and kids are all grown up..then maybe it's time to spend time back in Malaysia. Ask yourselves truthfully before coming back for good. Will you guys be happy? Are your kids going to be happy? Can they speak BM? Or maybe you are tired of staying at your current location in USA...America is huge...maybe you want to explore living in other states? Of course, we Malaysians love to have you back..to contribute to our nation. But think for your family. Don't live a life of regrets. I have seen marriages broken when folks like you after 10+ years in USA and came back for good. Job securities here.. etc..there are so many variables and uncertainties. Are they worth coming back...say in 2-5 years time? Driving in Malaysia...only the insane survives here. Are you guys up to it on the roads? Worth the stress? We are ok...we adapted because we didn't live abroad like you guys. Lastly, 11 years is a loong time. If you came back in year 4 or 5..thst's not so bad. Your seniority with your jobs there....as you ponder to come back in 5 more years...that'll be 16 years in USA! Will you get anything equivalent here in Malaysia when you start all over? Life in Malaysia is no longer easy.

I've lived abroad for a short while and miss Malaysia a lot. I find nothing like home la. And Asia is starting or has been coming up now, there is nothing much to attract you to look to the West. Of course, decide or do what is suitable for you and your family. I still love Malaysia despite all its shortcomings. Healthcare in Malaysia is great and my family member is in healthcare. Nowhere is perfect, just got to work with what is good.

I (Malaysian) have been living abroad for all of my adult life, currently living in Europe, married to a European and we have 2 small children. I can relate to a lot of what Logesh is saying. However, we have made the decision to stay in Europe, at least until the children have grown up. The main reason for this decision is actually kind of sad - it's because my children do not have Malaysian citizenship (with me being a woman & the children were born overseas). Without Malaysian citizenship, things would be so difficult and complicated for the children. There is a court case on this issue, but I am not hopeful. Maybe someday we'll retire in Malaysia. Who knows.

When you are married to another nationality,this is already another problem. In Malaysia the immigration system is going to be tough for your spouse and kids but eventually in the end they will get they right. Been living in SF for 3 years now about to go on to 4 and I agree with everything you said very spot on.The accessibility to food and healthcare is the reason why I miss Malaysia so much here I do everything to make sure I dont get injured just cause of the healthcare system.US is a great and fun place to live and explore but imo not a good place to settle down due to how expensive it is

Kumar & Rachel, the decision you make today will have a big impact on your children's future. Both of you have made a decent living in the States . You manage to inculcate a Malaysian culture in the life of your family and community. You live in a country which gives you the freedom and liberty to do these things, even though things may not be perfect. It takes a lot for the both of you to be where you are today. Give your children a chance to build on your legacy. Give them the opportunity to spread the Malaysian spirit of inclusivity amidst diversity in the people they meet. You can only build on that legacy if you continue living the American Dream , Malaysian style.

With all the happenings around US, I noticed a lot of Americans from cali, moved abroad mostly due to standard of living. And also with all the shootings around the US, sometimes I do thought of how u, Rachel and the kids are doing and what kind of reactions after the news broke out. For my personal opinion, i think the US is unsafe to reside in.

If you an entrepreneur with businesses around the globe earning seven or eight figures a year, then the whole family can be based in Malaysia as the cost of living is cheaper and the taxation system in Malaysia is better than US. If you are a salary earner earning less than seven figures, then it is better to comeback and retire in Malaysia when you already have sufficient money to last for the rest of your life without working.

It’s really really good you gave the pros and cons on living aboard that especially the saying ‘the grass is greener over the other side’ well when you are on the side it isn’t, you have to sacrifice something to gain other things. It’s all up to you on what you want from that country and work towards that, I cannot live anywhere except Malaysia simple because everything I want is here, well politicians will be politicians, it’s up to us to make the change, god willing there will be a good change for Malaysia soon. Berhijrah itu bagus...dapat pengalaman baru...tempat baru orang baru suasana baru... kadang2 kita berhijrah sebab kita tak fikir panjang...fikir nak lari...tapi bila kita dah lama berada di tempat orang...umur pun dah banyak membuat kita berfikir...rupa nya tempat kita berasal itu adalah tempat yang terbaik...mana2 pun kita pergi pasti kembali ke tempat asal

I know that feeling, I am now 35 years living in Switzerland and I went through losing both my parents in the process, which was stressful as my parents got older. I was on my toes at every phone call that came during weird hours. But I never regretted my move to leave Malaysia, now I am privileged to have two countries that I call home. Despite the politics, I still love Malaysia but going back to settle down there is no more in my plans. It used to be though.

If i have a chance to go overseas to live and work, definitely it's a dream come true and good experience for me. However, I'm happy that you & your lovely family decided to comeback to Malaysia as it maybe a good life changing experience for the children to learn about Malaysia❤️❤️❤️

you will always be a Malaysian at heart and Rachel will always be an American at heart. As you rightly said you can't just pack up and leave some attachments can't be broken.For most of us going overseas and experiencing a different culture is a privilege. But some are lucky enough to get the opportunity. If you come back to Malaysia the most important thing that I would advise is not to have high expectations. There are positives and negatives everywhere.....you just have to know what to expect and what you are getting yourselves into. Remember, you are also making that decision for your kids while they're still small.

Logesh go ahead and enjoy life in USA. I had my share of living in USA,although not as long as you. However I tremendously enjoyed myself, was there at about your age. I was in the airline industry , as flyer 40 years ago there was a lot of discrimination in USA. However I drifted to the Middle East & finally head home to retire. Now family means my whole life,especially time with two grandsons. Every moment is so very precious & will not trade this for anything in this world! Time will come when your life style & people important to you will make the decision. In the mean time enjoy what you have!

‘Home is there heart is’… My wife and I are Malaysians residing overseas in the phase of starting a family. It’s always difficult when your loved ones are far away and the thought comes to mind to head home.. hopefully one day 🙂.. all the best for your future endeavors Kumarr Family!! 😊👍

There's always new things (good or bad) for you and your family to discover - according to the plan leave the US and to stay permanently in Malaysia. Hopefully you and your family love Malaysia and Malaysia love you all 💞😅💞

I have moved from my home in the uk to Malaysia. It will be interesting to see where you end up living when you do eventually move back to Malaysia
