Thou Shalt Not PASS! Sometimes real history gets as epic as fantasy!Kumamoto castle in the hearth of Kyushu region is the real deal, a rare example of a Japanese castle that saw real battle, stood against the rebel army of Satsuma, sustained a siege and didn't allow onw single soul inside its premises. A castle that not even the earthquake from 2016 could destroy.

Nearby the castle on a hillside toward the station in a forrest is the tomb of one of Kumamoto's historical leaders. His tomb is surrounded by dozens of stone lanterns - each one representing a servant or vassal that killed themselves on his death - so not to serve any other lord. The diverted river running around the castle which acted as a moat has quite a few huge koi living in it - despite the ferocious flow in rainy season. There are built shelters where they can hide in this time. A fantastic castle town. Highly recommended for the castle, and nearby active volcano Mnt Aso. Some of the best scenic driving or cycling routes in the world dotted with amazing hot springs and temples. Two of the best ramen places in the world are also in town. My mouth is watering with the memory.

I am from Kumamoto. I was born and raised there. My ancestor was samurai and served for this castle, so when the earthquake struck, I cried. I was there 2 months ago. While the re-construction of the castle is well under way, it now looks too modern. I sincerely hope they can retain the old style and create traditional looks and feel of the old castle.

Kato Kiyomasa was one of the commanders during Imjin war(Japanese invasion of Joseon Korea). At the later days of the war, he was besieged by the Ming and Joseon troops while he was defending the castle of Busan. During that long siege his army ran out of food, which almost cause him to starve to death. Lucky for him he managed to escape and return to Kyushu. Due to this horrible experience, he was obsessed about building a castle that could withstand a very, very long siege. He dug up plentiful wells to have access to fresh water all time. And he also ordered his men to make the floor covers(dadami) with sweet potato stems. So he could boil it and make it into emergency rations during desperate times.

I spent a day at the castle 5 years ago while on a business trip. It's very accessible even to non-Japanese-speakers. In addition to the impressive exteriors, some of the buildings had exhibits and recreations inside. The earthquake that damaged the castle destroyed my employer's office in the Kumamoto suburbs.

Just a question have you ever analyzed the armor of popular video games? For instance games like Dark Souls, for Honor, and Kingdom Come Deliverance? If you have or have not have you assess the possibility of whether or not they wood function as historical armor would or if they are based on any style of historical armor?

Love this video, however i hate to nitpick... at 5:55 you called Toyotomi Hideyoshi the "Shogun"... and i know he was almost functionally Shogun, but his actual title was "Taiko" ( he was not given the title of Shogun due to his low birth, from what I understand). Keep up all your awesome content!

As I understand it, though I could be wrong, Hideyoshi succeeded Oda Nobunaga, who was the Shogun until he was assassinated, so I would presume that Hideyoshi took over the Title of Shogun from him as well. But someone with a better grasp of Japanese History than I could probably tell you better.

Hi Metatron, always been a big fan of yours. Sorry if this is irrelevant to the topic but I'd like to show you a cool video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdmUodGFyK2cdWQ.html. This is a promo vid for a historical reenactment event held in China just a few weeks ago. This is especially awesome because unlike their Japanese counterparts, Chinese armors have been long forgotten even by the Chinese ourselves. Modern artisans and enthusiasts only have ancient manuscripts, artworks, and a very small number of actual archaeological finds to reference from, seeing these armors being brought back to life and these epic battles being reenacted is like a dream come true to me. It'd be really cool if you can share your thoughts on the topic, thanks!

7:40 & 7:50 is that a Legend of the 5 Rings image? great game! too bad Fantasy of Flight and Games bought it, I hate their dice system and they are ruining the beauty of the Roll&Keep system that fit so perfectly with the scenario. In Roll and Keep you row X dice and keep Y as given by atributes and skills, this mean you can chose to failure a test, be it to make the game more interesting, be it because your lord demanded so, in FFG you have to buy THEIR dice with random symbols that you have to memorize, then you throw dices as determined by atributes, skills, difficulty of the task, other condidtions andGM's desire, count the total of each kind of symbol, subtract some of them, add the others, then look up a non-sensical table to see what your results meant for this kind of test. Oh, and you can't "chose to failure" even if your lord so demanded, you roll high on a task you were supposed to fail? too bad, you suceeded, you roleplayed that you tried to save a friend even though it would be much better plot-wise for the character to die and rolled high? too bad, now you better find something to do with him, 'cause he is alieve... somehow...
