Kumeyaay Indians of Baja California (full version)

This ethnographic film was produced by film students at San Diego State College in 1968 with Dr. Paul Ezell (Anthropology) & Dr. Roy Madsen (Cinema). It was filmed on 16mm over several journeys to the settlements of Neji and Ha-a in Northern Baja California, Mexico. The original film was reconstructed in 2009 from an old VHS copy because the original film materials no longer exist. Some still photos were added from high quality 4X5 B&W negatives photographed by Rick Roessler a year after the film was shot. The brick house is the only remnant of the Neji settlement.

I’m from Mexicali but my grandma comes from Tecate and she got to share some of her stories with me. I love my ancestors and the blessings they passed down♥️🙏🏽

I'm also from Tecate and that Neji settlement used to be called La Rancheria next to El Gato later to be called Ejido Guadalajara. My uncle my mothers nephew Lalo Cota used to live at the settlement. Asi que conosco muy bien ese lugar desafortunadamente ya no podemos ir con la libertad de antes dado a la violencia.

I live in escondido california in San Diego County and native americans used to live where my trailer park is. The tribe was the ipai tribe. Me and my friends found an arrowhead and a grinding stone in my back yard. I didn't even know about the grinding stone til one day I was looking through some brush in my backyard and I found it buried amongst brush. I don't live on a reservation but it's crazy how there's a bunch of artifacts in my trailer park and yard.

Wild! Theres a lot of petroglyphs in the mountains behind Escondido too. A lot of grinding stone at palomar too, unlimited acorns.

This is so cool to know and learn about a culture and the people here in Southern California. I am from the Imperial valley and have always loved the drive to San Diego. I alway knew that there is more history that probably still has not been discovered yet. I am so happy that these beautiful people still continue their traditions. Now I would love to do a DNA test. Only to want to connect with my true roots. No matter where they may be. Kumeyaay are very blessed and must be so proud of their culture and people.

My parents lived like that just 60 years ago. My dad always reminded us, that when they were in Mexico they ate every other day, but once in the USofA they ate EVERY day, might of just been beans , but they ate every day!!! God Bless the USofA

they lived in paradise for 800 generations ,and then , one day , the spanards showed up and did horrible , inhumane crimes against them .they lost their history that they had recorded on every rock they found . i have discovered their story .it's about one of the most important human events in history .the survival of their people for 12,000 years, and the ant people who helped them. much like the Hopi story , only in California.

I'm Diegueno, Capitan Grande Band of California Mission Indian, aka Kumeyaay but my tribe wasn't from Baja, we were from the San Diego coastline, around the Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, along the Pacific Coast Highway. We were fisherman, we grew fruits and vegetables, and we were basket weavers. The Spaniards pushed us up into the mountains of San Diego, my reservation is still in the mountains, it's called Barona. My grandma Lucy had 3 stoves, one in the kitchen to cook on, an old woodstove in the living room for heat and an old woodstove outside, under her eucalyptus tree, she would make tortilla's and frybread outside in the summer because we didn't have air conditioning. I'm 65 and I still cook the way my grandma and aunt taught me to cook, I guess the only thing I don't make is acorn mush, or shawee, I never liked it. Quitac blood runs through my veins, my great grandfather Lucas Quitac was from the snake clan and my great grandmother Modesta Quitac was from the turtle clan.

I'm related to the Cuero's, my great grandfather Lucas Quitac and Mark Cuero's mom were brother and sister. After Uncle Mark died, Aunt Mary moved the rest of the kids to her reservation, she was from Campo. Uncle Mark is actually my cousin, but we grew up calling him Uncle out of respect. I'm from Barona.
