Kumihimo 101: The basic round braid

This tutorial is another addition to my Kumihimo 101 series. As the first of several videos where I will be going through the basic kumihimo braids, in this one I show how to make the basic round braid using different amounts of strands. Ordered the rainbow bracelet from you the other day and it arrived this morning. I've just followed this video and made my first braid. I think I'm going to really enjoy this new hobby. Thank you for the clarity with which you describe how to make kumihimo. Tomorrow I'll try the rainbow bracelet. I hope it won't be too advanced as I've never done this until just now!

Thanks for the update and the links - really appreciated. I really enjoyed seeing the different size of cords used and how they turned out, because I learned this craft through your channel I've kept to the 1mm cord but it's nice to see the difference that the size of cord makes. Oh dear, I have a feeling I will be doing a little bit of shopping later.

You make it do easy n after watching many of your vids on this I still that it looks hard lil it's y I never bought one..it would probably be easier to learn if I bought one n tried it..thanks for sharing your the best online!..be prepared n be safe!

I'm a begginner, should I start off with a 4 strand kumihimo? Can you even do a 4 strand Kumihimo, or do you have to do the 8 stranded one?

Hi Christina , your braids are great, patterns galore, just out of curiosity is it possible to create a braid that shows initials?I've seem many so im guessing initials aren't possible , but if they are im sure you would be the best to ask. Elaine.

katehutch x a standard size for a bracelet is 7 inches. I say “a” standard size because obviously that’s a generalisation. All wrists are different. For me 7 is a little big, for my friend, 6 is better. When calculating the length you need to get your finished braid, the rule of thumb is take your finished length, and triple it. Keep in mind that other braids can use more material and the size of braiding cord you use also has bearing on how much length you use.

Yes Catz is right. That is the general rule, but like she said there’s varying factors. I tend so use lengths of approx 50cm.

I usually make a 30cm rope and then just wrap it around my wrist a few times and wear it as a bracelet.

You can slow the speed down to suit yourself by click ing on the "Settings" icon at the base of the video. Then you find a choice of either slower or faster speed, it's very helpful...I slow the speed down a little and it's much easier (for me anyway). Good Luck!

See my instructions on how to slow the video above in my answer to Anita Williams. It works beautifully! You can also use the subtitle icon, it helps you understand. Christine's videos are so good you don't want to miss anything!!
