Let me try to explain what Nayyar tried to express here (about the Indian Wedding tradition) in a better manner. He's correct about eunuchs extorting money before a wedding. By the way they do that even after a child is born. Eunuchs become eunuchs in the first place because that is the closest they can get as far as sex change is concerned (a full fledged surgery is costly). Yes, most of them are born with gender dysphoria, but many are born as hermaphrodites as well. Hijra is the umbrella term to describe these people. In older days before abrahamic invasions took place (both Muslim and Christian) these people were equally respected like the rest of us by the society. But today they are considered to be freak shows unfortunately, and extortion is their way of retaliating. It is a direct result of marginalization. The government these days has introduced a third gender category in various fields, so that they can enjoy equal opportunities. But we have a long way to go. Here's another explanation, the Hindu God Shiva is also called Ardhanarishwar (meaning half male and half female). The fact that the Ardhanarishwar figure of Shiva was venerated is proof enough to reinforce the equal significance of transgenders in ancient India. They represented the marriage between a man and a woman. Therefore their presence was considered auspicious in many religious occasions. But with time of course the purpose becomes distorted like we can see. About the stealing of shoes, it's a funny game that takes place between the bride's family and that of the groom's. So the groom's sister in laws try to steal his shoes and hide them. The groom's brothers and cousins will try to retrieve them, the failing of which will result in them paying up. Of course no one is forced to do that. It's a jocund activity. Even if they do pay up, the money is used by both the parties for drinks and fun. It's like a treat that the groom's brothers give to the to be sisters in laws. Many love stories blossom during this occasion.

this is all true, as I am also from a hindu family but from Nepal. my sister in laws stole my shoes at my wedding and asked for 500 dollars worth of Nepalese cash which is equal to 50, 000 Nepalese Rupees but we negotiated and had the deal on 50 dollars to get back my shoes. :D
