Kundi harp; old recording from Congo, Afrika (1952)

Kundi player Bakia Pierre was recorded by Hugh Tracey in 1952, when the latter visited Buta in the country then called Belgian Congo. The first of the photos shows a kundi player; not Bakia Pierre himself but another man from the same Congo region in the 50´s.
The second picture shows the actual instrument, kundi.
The third is a photo of the road to Buta.
My audio source is a scratchy 78 record. It took a lot of editing to get it good enough for broadcasting.

Wow - the movement.. Such pulsing modulations, inflections & expression. So much with so little.. vocals and a few strings. I listened to it 3 times in a row! Thanks for posting. I branched off and found this as I was looking up the Kongou harp & Mangbetu Harp, from a story about a recent discovery of "World's Oldest Marijuana Found with Aryan Mummy" - a recent discovery of a 2,700 mummy who had some Cannabis buried along side with still active THC! Thanks for posting this & going the extra distance to make it so presentable to the ear still. A special post for sure! Cheers!

This is not Mangbetu but the Azande. The Mangbetu have similar music instruments to that of the Azande

Yes I know you know that the mangbetu and the zande are the same people with boa, budu, mayogo, abarambo, pagebeti, nzakara but there are still many ethnic groups that I have not mentioned here
