The landlord uses Tai Chi Fist from the Wu Dang School while his wife uses Lion's Roar from Shaolin Temple. Kung Fu Hustle actually paid homage to many classic wuxia novels and wuxia movies in the past, including references to Bruce Lee. The move used by the protagonist in the end fight is the 6th move (of nine moves total) of The Buddhist's Palm, named "The Buddha Descends From Heaven"

6:58 Fun Fact: This muscle guy is actually a real Shaolin monk, and the way he fights is what he learned from the Shaolin temple. Plus it’s the first time he’s acting in the movie, so he don’t know how to control the power and he beats up some of the top hats to the hospital during the scene. Even those top hats actors had learned martial arts before, so they have already know how to take the punches from the muscle guy and reduced the damage.

the Landladies actress is not only an expert chinese martial artist but also a trained opera singer. she was also trained by the same kung fu master as jackie Chan and Sammo hung

The battle with the blind musicians is so iconic. This whole movie is just a core memory for me.

As a Chinese, I am really happy to see so many people like this movie. The humor in this movie never gets old no matter how many time I rewatch it.

I'll never forget that a few years after this movie came out I was in a college English class and we were tasked with writing a comparison paper on The Matrix and KFH. Naturally we watched both movies on different days during the class before starting. When I tell you that I was the ONLY one in my class of 15 people laughing at this movie I'm not exaggerating. I knew by the end of the movie I couldn't be friends with anyone there because movies like this always make me laugh. The stupid parts of the movie are the best parts and I will never not laugh while watching stuff like this lol

Stephen Chow is a legend, one of the greats to adorn the world of cinema.

I remember seeing this in the theater as a totally random watch, and I was like, "What the hell is this?" for the first 20 mins. And then ever following 20 minutes, but in a different way. This movie goes from "real" to "cartoon" to "kung fu" to batshit crazy...and I loved ever minute of it.

I will never forget the first time I saw this movie. 2005 on cable. I was expecting my youngest son flipping through channels and got lucky. Been a movie I can't stop watching since. Like comfort food, your favorite pillow or the hug from a good friend.

Seeing you guys enjoy this without knowing anything beforehand is heartwarming. I remember watching this when it came out. i tried introducing it to some Army buddies, but they didn't really get it. This and Shaolin Soccer were movies I loved. So awesome seeing you guy's appreciate it. Really awesome. Edit: If you look up the backstory to this, or the making of this, you'll find that a LOT of really amazing martial arts movie stunt men and women were in this movie. The scene where he destroys the soccerball and says "no more soccer!" is a reference to his other movie, Shaolin Soccer. The musician assassins fight is definitely one of the many inspirations for the Dr. Strange 2 musical notes fight. Chow took Jackie Chan's kung fu comedy genre and elevated it into the stratospheric absurd realm of cartoonish yet somehow grounded heroes and villains. There's always something new to catch everytime I watch this. Def one of my top fav movies of all time. Cheers me up everytime I'm even just reminded of it and I'm glad you guys enjoyed it as well.

Welcome to one of the greatest and most rewatchable movies ever! Glad you enjoyed it and caught so much, and went in blind. Every minute of this movie is perfect, every line, every scene. The amount of physical comedy helps it translate internationally to any audience, the cartoon physics slowly escalate to lure you into the 'rules' of this little world. Appreciate how Stephen Chow wrote, directed AND starred in this /original/ film and assembled some of the greatest martial arts movie making talent of all time, including the sound mixers, composers, alongside the choreographers and stuntment. Look up the actors for Beast, Landlord and Landlady and you'll see what they meant by "the true masters together in one room." Chow's previous film was Shaolin Soccer, very similar and you'll enjoy. He later did 2 "Journey to the West" movies, which is a batshit crazy bonkers take on the same chinese myth Dragonball was based on.

Neat thing I noticed about the Musicians is that when the blind man attacks it's mostly silent yet kills anything he hits with an invisible blade, but when his partner joins he is mostly striking the instrument and their attacks are more visible, possibly intensifying their forms, so when they turn the thing upright the partner strikes it and sends out a shockwave and an army of ghosts

What the landlord did is a yinyang symbol. In taichi it means hard and soft, heavy and light (something like that) that is why he floats and like a rubber.

Fun fact: the tailor in real life is the grandmaster of the martial art that he used in the movie, Hung Gar, his name is Chi Ling Chiu. Also, hung gar is the martial art that is the basis of movement that earthbenders use in the ATLA universe.

This is one of those movies that does ridiculous correctly. It’s a basic story but it’s the characters that drive this movie. We instantly like these people and don’t want to see bad things happen to them. One of my favorites. That end is so good too, it just hits you right in the feels.❤😊

The most curious thing is that this film is a really funny, parodistic and comedy movie, but at the same time it can perfectly show the various steps of the elevation of the spirit in the buddhism culture, together with the various steps of the mastery of kung fu and martial arts. Even the simple fact of him jumping on the eagle has a true spiritual meaning in real life. At the end of the day, it can be considered a pretty good movie for those themes, at least for their representation. Also some of those actors are true and expert martial artists °w° Here some more info: So, in this movie there are 6 levels of Kung fu. Each level representing a state of mind and the body. The first level being the physical level. This level consists of the “twelve leg shao lin kick” “Hong jia fist” and “wu Lang ba gua staff” these are what is called “Ming jin” or “visible strength”. This is the usage of the physical strength of the body, it is also the first level of Kung fu. The second level is represented by the two blind man. This is when Kung fu is no longer only represented through the body, but also as a state of “energy” or “an jin”; this in English could be described as a strike that cannot be seen. This state of Kung fu is extremely powerful as it can kill without subject even realizing it has been killed. However, this is soon to be over shadowed by the third level of Kung fu: “Hua jin” or “mix of the strike” this is when one has mastered the first two levels of Kung fu and is able to combine the two. They are able to dissolve the attacks of the first two levels of Kung fu with ease. This is represented by the “land lord couples.” Through “Tai chi” and “shi hou gong” or “lion roar”. Though this level of Kung fu is already extremely powerful, the fourth level of Kung fu is even greater. This state of Kung fu is when the user have managed to use the mixture of energy, mastered before from the first, second, and third state and create something even further beyond. There is no name for this state in China, since people like this are generally considered to be one of the greatest masters of it’s time. This state of Kung fu is represented by “huo yun xie shen” or the “world’s top killer”. However, there is still room for even beyond this state. State 5, this is when you break the limit of your body and reach even beyond the roof of Kung fu. This is represented when the main character stepped on the eagle (the eagle of which represents the pinnacle of Kung fu). Stage five is represented through “Ru lai shen zhang” or “the Buddha palm” (the Kung fu the main character learned as a child.) But what is even further beyond this level is level 6. He didn’t show this in this movie, but in the movie after the main character has spared “Huo Yun Xie Shen”, he asks the main character what Kung fu he was using. And after hearing this, the main character calmly responds with: “you want to learn this? I can teach you.” This is when he has reached the last stage of Kung fu. Where Kung fu is longer used to just fight, but only to communicate and grow. This is known as “fan pu gui zhen” and in many Chinese sayings “jiu jiu gui yi” (after nine you have one and zero) meaning after you reach the pinnacle you return to where you have started. This is regarded as the true pinnacle state of Kung fu, and only the greatest of masters may dream of mastering it. Since it would mean to leave all of what you had behind and return to where you have started. Truly something not anyone can do.

I brought this on a whim on dvd, and loved it! It oozes charm and style, something of s rsrity these days. I told my brother about it, and he basically said "WTF". We watched it and a decade later, he still mentions this movie. Timeless and quality, just like Stephen Chow!

Hats off to Stephen Chow! He used to be (still is) THE No.1 comedy movie star in China, like Jim Carrey in the US. Everyone (I mean EVERYONE) who speaks Chinese knows him. He gradually transformed from a comedy star into a director and also did an amazing job. This guy is so famous and popular that Chinese people even created a meme for him: We all owe Lord Xing (his nickname - 星爷) a movie ticket.

Say what you will, this movie is one of the all time greats. A classic that we can watch over and over and never get bored. The compelling story, comedy, the music, the innovative and the unique fighting styles elegantly put together for a wide audience. It’s a gem!

An interesting fact about the actress who played the landlady, is that she was in a James Bond movie. You probably know it. The scene where Roger Moore as Bond is about to fight a karate school outside a dojo, and two schoolgirls show up and defend him by kicking all the karate students' collective butts.... She was there...School girl on the right.

This still remains as one of my all time favourites. I seriously went and saw this twice when it came out. Great story, characters, action, comedy, emotions. It's what movies should be. They shouldn't just entertain, they should make you feel. I still hope one day this gets a sequel

There are very few movies I would consider to be masterpieces. Kung Fu Hustle is one of them. The cinematography, musicality, sound effects, special effects, everything just works perfectly.

In India: this movie was one of the favourite movie for every teenage kid like me, story was very emotional specially the lovely bgm and song of ending.(Even i don't know the language, still beautiful). Also Her acting skills was on another level she didn't spoke a single word but her presence on screen 🌟🙌 it was a beautiful action, love story.

Fun fact - The person that played the land lady was chosen for the roll because she went to the audition with her friend to support her auditioning for the role. Apparently the director took notice of her and thought she was perfect for it, had her audition too and she landed the role. Also, she had a very hard time with the scene in the back of the car with her warning the axe gang boss, especially the hand gestures lol, not that anyone would know from the final cut. Once you guys delve into the Making Of of this movie you will appreciate it a million times more. Half the cast are martial arts legends (not well known in the west) The landlady actress actually put on weight for this role. Stephen Chow has a “crew” he does movies with and all of them are amazing in every film. His fat buddy, the second in command to the axe gang, the axe gang boss, the clerk who beats them up in the tram, are all part of his crew. On that note the Axe Gang boss guy is also in shaolin soccer but you will not recognize him lol Of the two musician killers the guy who fought the tailor is a very well known action star, he used to do shit with Jackie Chan back in the day. The actor who played The Beast is a very old martial arts actor who fell out of favor with the chinese govt many years ago and his career got ruined, this was his return to acting. He’s been in some films since this one The tailor, baker and the guy with the kicks are all famous guys, the younger guy started as a stuntman and plays side characters in many films The landlord and landlady are also pretty big names This film is a love letter to many many things of the past, as well as people. It’s like the Expendables but obviously better I also love Stephen Chow’s “dirty” / sloppy aesthetic he gives most characters. It really does sell the characters as real people. Literally all the characters in Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer are ppl you would see on the street and never notice.

I love this movie so much!!! My best friend made me watch it with him because he kept telling me I would love it but I was being an ass and kept saying nah it looks like it sucks. So after he made me watch it with him I thanked him for making me watch it because it was just so damn good. He passed away in 2006 on my birthday and every time I watch Kung Fu Hustle it reminds me of him. All the touchy-feely parts really hit me hard because of it. Thank you, guys for watching it. I'm so glad you enjoy it as much as I do. Keep up the good work guys.

The best part about this movie is how freaking deep it is. Like, you guys watched and loved it for all the surface stuff, I did too, but after watching a few reactions and reading comments its insane how much symbolism and easter eggs and deeper meaning there was in everything going on here that made it 100x better. Its really rare to see a film that can do that. Be amazing on the surface and even better with the insider knowledge required to "get" all the references.

I watched it in the cinema when it came out. I went there with a friend I was doing Kung Fu with and the cinema was practically empty. We both literally rolled on the floor between the seats laughing our asses off. One of the best movie memories ever.

One of my all-time favorite movies. It combines part of the brutal reality of China in the older days with over-the-top kungfu flick BS and makes it all work somehow by adding actually good combat, humor, emotions and wholesomeness. I actually watched it in China the first time, so I could personally relate to some of the stuff like sandy roads, the way people live in communities, the heat roasting everything in the streets...

So happy to see people still discovering this gem! Being raised in an asian household meant I watched a lot of martial arts movies growing up, but this one always stuck with me more than others. It's such an unexpected combination of styles and tones that would've absolutely clashed in any other movie, but with Stephen Chow's direction it all comes together in a unique and cohesive vision with real heart and emotion. He's got some other great movies too, including Shaolin Soccer, but also CJ7 which takes a more conventional alien fish-out-of-water kid's movie story and tells it in a really moving and heartfelt way.

A great mix of humor, satire, VFX and emotions. Not only is the movie an absolute gem, but did anyone notice the awesome background score. I purchased the whole music album as soon as I watched the movie.

That little fist and nose rub the Landlady does in the car is an homage to Bruce Lee intimidating the gangster in Return of the Dragon.

The storytelling is perfect, hero journey, character developments, dialogue, sadness, humor and seriousness all these aspects crafted perfectly in an hour long movie, CGi/special effects isn't that high quality compared to the present day but they utilised it perfectly and creatively. This is still one of my favorite movies! I had my kids watch it when they got old enough, and I knew I was doing something right when they enjoyed it as much as I did. It's funny and well-acted, easily follows the different events in the storyline and makes you feel a variety of emotions for so many characters, full of action with amazing choreography, and can even jerk some tears from your eyes! What gets better than that? Chow is a genius!

This is one of my favorite films period. Anyone not watching this is sleeping on a hidden gem. In Asian cinema, this is in my top 3.

kung fu hustle is a worldwide movie masterpiece

I'm glad yall appreciate the emotional part of the film. A lot of his films are pretty emotional, but that aspect goes under-appreciated. The combination of music and story during the flashback scene always make me want to tear up. It tells you about the unfortunate life of these characters, and the MC's inner character arc so succinctly. There's a lot of class undertones throughout the movie too, and growing up in poorer part of Asia, I really relate.

When I first watched that many years ago I thought this movie was extremely entertaining, but now when I watch it, the last scene where they turned back into the young boy and girl representing the returning to the pure hearts, it made me cry.

Love the NO MORE SOCCER quote, as a nod toward Shaolin Soccer, the first of the three. CJ7 was the third movie in this hidden trilogy, where Kung Fu Hustle was the 2nd of them.
