In Chinese culture - and I'm sure in many others - you can refer to people as sister/brother/auntie/uncle as a sign of respect and as part of the hierarchy. You don't need to be related. Shaolin Soccer is an obvious one to check out next, but the best Stephen Chow film is probably A Chinese Odyssey.

I love this movie so much. Used to watch it all the time. I’m always mad that Coolie went out without a fight though lol
@annaliu908
@annaliu908 7 ай бұрын
i was told that was because coolie's kungfu is more of muscle, less chi, aka less sensitive, lowest level among those three, so he didnt even realise those two killers were there. and when the 10ring tailor was pulled out of his shop, he at least was able to spot that music, and noticed the killer immediately.
@IamNinjaOfNinja
@IamNinjaOfNinja 7 ай бұрын
@annaliu908 I feel that he had to be taken out quick from far because he is too dangerous to deal with hand to hand, face to face. The other not so blind guy will probably lose to Coolie if so. I hated they film it this way and people assume Coolie is the weakest. He was not given a chance to fight back at all while the other 2 had the chance to anticipate

The landlord's name is Yuen Wah. He played the role of the old man in Tao Lo in the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Additionally, the Kung Fu Hustle movie poster was visible in Shang-Chi's bedroom. Finally, the ten rings in the movie were portrayed as armbands/bracelets instead of finger rings as depicted in the comic book and were worn by the tailor character in Kung Fu Hustle.

thank you for watching this film, guys. stephen chow ('the one') is the equivalent of a hollywood comedic legend like adam sandler. when i grew up in the 90s in asia, he was already the leading guy in a few famous hk comedic films. someone said the guy who plays the landlord is also a legend, his filmography is insane. he was in the shang chi film. the landlady is a veteran actor too. if in the future you're interested in watching another gem, most people would recommend you watch 'shaolin soccer'. some actors from this film were in it too (ala adam sandler). happy birthday to ROB. and a happy Christmas to you lads.

This one of my absolute favorites. I’m always really moved at the end when he turns his adversary into a friend by simply saying, “I can teach you.” The Beast recognizes he has so much to learn outside of hatred & violence. Hence his emotional response. Such beautiful sentiment in a crazy movie. There’s more power in the open hand than in the closed fist. 💜💜

Coolie is not a name. It's the term used for porters who lift heavy stuff. The Brits called all the natives coolies in their colonies. It's become a racist and derogatory term now in places that were colonies previously. So if you called an African that, it's the same as the N word. Though it's used in Asia to address porters in general.

Most of the big characters are big kung fu stars of old. The gay tailor and the assassin musician guy with the nails that was fighting him in his store are old action stars. The latter worked with Jackie Chan in some films. The landlord and landlady are pretty similar, old martial arts stars, the landlady actress even put on weight just for this role. The guy playing Coolie, the guy with the kick style, is also a somewhat well known stuntman and martial artist, he’s in many films as a supporting actor. Stephen Chow has a crew of actors that you see in all of his movies, the fat guy is one of them, as well as the two leaders of the axe gang. Most interesting though is the story of the actor who plays the Beast. This was his return role to acting after decades. He is an action / martial arts actor who fell out of favour with the communist party in china so he was pretty much banned from starring in movies, missing his prime as a result, and Stephen Chow invited him to do this film which kickstarted his acting career again.

Theres so much to it Landlady? Yuen Qiu. Was a Bond Girl in The Man with the Golden Gun. Same master as Jackie Chan/Sammo Hung/Yuen Wah as one of the Seven Little Fortunes. Landlord? Most recently in Legend Shang Chi. Also one of the Seven Little Fortunes. The Beast? Bruce Leung. 70's Martial Art film legend, one of the Four Dragons. Who else? Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. Tailor? Chiu Chi Ling. Hung Gar master, has his own school in the US, acted alongside a number of big names. Coolie? Xing Yu. Shaolin Monk. Donut? Dong Zhihua, trained in peking opera. Heck, even the first gangster who got killed, the second in command at axe gang, blind killers, etc... All people known within the HK industry. It was really a whos who..

The One was broken when he was a kid. Being a naive and good person just got him pissed on and beaten up. So he's trying so hard to become a bad guy. A con. But since he's really good at heart, he's just really bad on being bad. The forceful laugh when he rob the girl for the first time is a subtle hint that he's really faking it being a bad heartless monster. When beast got him near death, his chi flow opened. He's got the clarity and content to his full potential. Anyway, great video guys. I've been watching so many reactions to this movie, you're the only one remember the frog foreshadowing in the asylum. Nice Also, did you tried react to Shaolin Soccer yet? It's a must after Kung Fu Hustle. It's the early movie from the same guy, Stephen Chow, on writing and directing. It's the cult classic. The scene in Kung Fu Hustle movie when he's destroyed kids' soccer ball? It's a reference to Shaolin Soccer, which is so good, the fans demanding sequel for years. So he's answering with this scene in which he said, "No more soccer!"

4:25 in Chinese you say big brother as like an honorific, not actually family relation, like calling someone uncle

The axe gang (Big brother = gang leader) was a opium smoker, hence his teeth & behavior, etc. This movie have lots of hidden jokes, meaning & other classic movie references most don't know. 😁

In China they often call each other brother or sister, that doesn't mean they are relatives.

"That was his sister" lol no, we asians use big brother/big sister/auntie/uncle to people either we look up to or older than us, even those that are not related to us, it's like honorifics too, similar to Mr/Ms/Sir/Maam And how could you not know this masterpiece of a movie and Stephen Chow? Preposterous, won so many awards and at one point, the highest grossing foreign film in the west, how could you? Hahaha Check out Shaolin Soccer too, made and stars the same guy (which is also a big hit) EDIT: That guy wearing green, are f****** okay dude? Lol
