A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 game for the NES, Kung Fu.
For the full review, compete with screenshot gallery and soundtrack, check out my write-up at www.nintendocomplete.com/kung-fu
Played through one loop each of the 1-player Type A and Type B game modes.
Kung Fu, Irem's classic 1984 arcade title, arrived for the NES launch (alongside Irem's 1983 coin-op 10 Yard Fight) courtesy of Nintendo, compete with black box plastered with pixel art. It's an extremely simplistic, incredibly addictive beat 'em up based on the old Jackie Chan flick (Meals on Wheels) that, despite looking significantly worse in the downgrade to the NES, retains every ounce of its playability in the conversion.
It was followed up by a couple of games - Vigilante (1988 - arcade, SMS, TG16) was a direct sequel, and the Japanese Famicom received its own exclusive sequel (1991- Spartan X 2). There was also a Game Boy exclusive entry in Irem's 1990 Kung Fu Master. There was a sequel developed before Vigilante, but it was shelved. A prototype of it has been found and dumped, but the dumps were never given to the MAME team for incorporation for whatever reason.
Kung Fu, Kung Fu Master, Spartan X - whatever you want to call it, is a great game, and though badly dated now, was a revolutionary step forward for its time.

@Katakuri you can't get any more nostalgic. If you told me that playing SMB on the wii or mariomaker wasn't nostalgic, I'd buy that. But to play it on its original system, on a CRT television... is as nostalgic as it gets my friend.

I'll always love this game not just as a fun game, but as a fascinating case study in tightly focused game design. Just two buttons and a d-pad, and yet you can do everything you'd expect to be able to, and all of it serves a purpose. Crouching and jumping give you alternate attacks in addition to serving as evades and riskier moves like punches and jump kicks give you more points and get you to the extra life faster. Each enemy is recognisable at a glance with a simple, easily-understandable behaviour that adds up to complex semi-random situations. There's nothing in the game you can really take away without it essentially falling apart. That's something I find fascinating.

The NES version had the sound and music re-arranged by Koji Kondo. This explains why when Thomas was hit with a knife, it sounds like Link getting hit in Zelda II. The bosses laughing when they kill you are the same as Ganon laughing in Zelda II or Bald Bull or Soda Popinski laughing in Punch-Out!!

I always used to pause and unpause the cutscene at 2:12 when the laugh begins, to see haw many times I could get the laugh to loop. Speaking of the laugh, I lent the game away in my teen years and never got it back. So in 2007 I bought the game on Ebay, back when NES games was cheap, and I got a cursed copy. Or rather a glitched one. The laugh and death sound effects would play on random, and also some visual glitches. The longer you played, the more frequent they became. I think I recorded some gameplay and put it here on KZfaq when I later sold the game myself to demonstrate to make the buyer beware of the glitches, but that video has long been deleted.

For the first time in my life, Mr. X was finally revealed through the help of a Speedrunner. Thanks for making it possible. As a kid back in the old days, I can only imagine Mr. X. Because I can't pass the boss level where you just need to hit the head.

"Jump kick" is Ken's strongest attack that I liked to use. One jump kick can eliminate 50% health of any boss (except for the 4th floor boss can get away unharmed and just losing his head.....he is the most surreal being in this game), or kick off a row of three guards in one go (which was a very satisfying move). No use on kid guards however.

Whats funny is, back when this game came out the game was like 49.99 which in today's money would be more like 85$For a game that can be beaten in about 6 minutes once you got good at the game, lolCan you imagine if you bought a AAA game today for 85 bucks and you beat the game in 6 minutes!!

Kung Fu for the NES is a fantastic reproduction of its arcade counterpart and an action-packed winner, and a near perfect conversion with all the gameplay and levels intact from the arcade original. In the NES version, Thomas is closely modelled after Jackie Chan, making it the first video game to feature a real-life person. The game's side-scrolling action gameplay played a key role in the development of Nintendo's influential side-scrolling platform game Super Mario Bros. (1985), developed by the same Nintendo team behind the NES port Kung Fu. Shigeru Miyamoto cited his development of the Famicom port as one of the key factors behind his creation of Super Mario Bros. According to Miyamoto, the concept of Super Mario Bros. came about as a result of the "technical know-how" built up from Excitebike and Kung Fu, his work on which inspired him to come up with a game that would have the player "strategize while scrolling sideways" over long distances, have aboveground and underground levels, and have colorful backgrounds rather than black backgrounds, resulting in the creation of Super Mario Bros. Kung Fu was also one of the first NES titles that originated from a third-party developer, giving it a "special place" in the history of the Nintendo Entertainment System according to IGN.
