Dan’s comments about studios putting out movies at the same time for the same demographic is another reminder of December 2018 when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Aquaman, Bumblebee, and Mary Poppins Returns all coming out with the first two weeks.

Idk who decided that was a good word to use in the title considering a good number of people, especially in the US, will feel uncomfortable saying “negroes” It’s an absolutely terrible decision from a marketing standpoint and it will 100% alienate a portion of people from every demographic. This is coming from a black person who works in marketing lol

Another great charts episode Dan! Glad Dune 2 didn't have a huge drop. I knew adjusted for inflation that GWTW would be the highest grossing BP winner. However, I didn't see "The Sound Of Music" coming in second. Wow!

I wonder how long DreamWorks can keep the Kung Fu Panda franchise alive since they planned it to be 6 movies which means only 2 of them left and one of the cast who played Mr Ping, James Hong is now 95 years old. I hope DreamWorks doesn't dragged on for the last two Kung Fu Panda movies

Hispanic people are such a huge force at the box office. They tend to have families and do things in groups. The mistake some studios and some pundits (especially Beyond the Trailer) make is thinking that they need to make more "Hispanic movies" and movies with large "Hispanic representation". They cant fathom that hispanic people, like other people of color, are not obsessed with their race and only want to see themselves on screen. They just like movies. They dont want to be pandered to and thats what happens when the studios make movies specifically for them. They handle them with kid gloves on and make unrealistic and idealized Hispanc characters.

Also Jack Black is really popular with Mexican audiences, Nacho Libre really jumped his career, and funnily enough the Kung Fu Panda movies even though animated movies are mostly only dubbed in teathers, but since the they use the same voice actor for all of Jack Black movies is the same voice people associated with him. So while yeah Hispanic don't care much about representation, I think star power still have a huge draw at least with Mexican audiences

@@briankennedy5885 yeah. I guess if that Nacho Libra aspect true it also flies in the face of the modern thinking. That movie would be drug through the mud online if it were released now. These same pundits would tear it apart for having a white lead and being written and directed by a white man. I remember a few years ago that terrible Matt Damon movie The Great Wall was released. So many of the podcasts I listen to shamed it for being a white lead in an Asian story even though in that case it was produced by an Asian company. Like you are saying regarding Jack Black- other countries and ethnic groups like movie stars. They are not caught up on what color they are.

I totally about making movies for different audiences. Kung fu panda is a kids movie and parents have to go along but that audiences is not the sMe for Dune. Kids were not fw Dune. Every movie doesn't have to appeal to everybody to make money. Especially kids movies

Never thought I’d say it but I have a begrudging respect for Kung Fu Panda as a franchise, considering how derivative it is it has done remarkably well. The amount of specials and cross media content that has spun out of this series is amazing as well, not to mention the 4 relatively high performing films at the box office.

I remember being so excited for 300 when it came out. I can’t say I’ve revisited that movie much since it came out, but for an in-theater experience it delivered everything I had hoped for. I’m part of the crowd that didn’t see Zodiac in theaters, but loved it at home, so I’ll accept some blame for that!

I work at the box office on weekends at my theater and even i was shocked at the amount of hispanic families going to Kung Fu Panda 4, it wasnt the same as the mario bros movie last year but it was a pretty high number

I would love to see a return of the market share pie graph, even if just at the end of each month, like you were doing before. It's really fun to see it move around now as the bigger movies are starting to come out. Also, the slow start to the year has allowed some smaller companies to open up a bigger slice. I don't know if you'd be able to do it retroactively to reflect how things looked at the end of Feb, and then update it at the end of March. Very unique to see Disney at a current 0.49% while even A24 is at over 2%

We need another adjustment category: adjusted for market share depreciation over time. Meaning the movie market has shrank over time …. There may be actually no way to beat Gone with the Wind because of the market share of movies as a form of entertainment at the time. This metric may be superfluous but interesting 🧐

Honestly , I’m very surprised that second weekend drop for dune 2 is by -44% which is so much better then first one by -62% , it’s also worth noting that Dune part 2 needs to gross between $500 million - $700 million at box office in order to break even against production budget of $190 million

Your numbers seem to be a bit high to claim break even. While I suspect the break even number is much lower. But Dune Part 2 still needs to provide healthy returns to justify multiple franchise movies.

Why surprised? The first movie was released in 2023, in October, a time when some people still didn't feel safe in movie theaters because of Covid. Moreover, it opend in theaters and was released for free on HBOmax on the same day. So I'm not surprised at all; I think it could end with more than 250 million in the US and at least 400 overseas, for a total of at least 650 million, but maybe even more than 700....

Disney should make a Wild Hogs sequel with the same cast, they could do something fun with the premise like say what if they really went to South America and we got all the beautiful footage, it could be like that movie with Stephen Merchant where he's traveling the British countryside talking with another guy. I admittedly never watched it. Just give me those vibes though. Just four really good friends riding motorcycles and having some good conversation with coffee.

I really think there should be an asterisk next to gone with the wind. Considering how many releases in 1939, 1941, 1942, 1947, 1954. And I think there are a few others that I think that calling this the highest grossing is grossly misleading. In the same vein as re-releasing Avatar to take back the crown from Infinity war. Frankly if a movie leaves the theater for more than 3 months there should be an asterisk next to it.

I think this just tells us that if we get Dune Messiah it could definitely compete during the summer! Follow Oppenheimer's lead on this one, but also play to the strengths that it already has which is that it also plays like an action/adventure film. So it can exist in the same space as something like Oppneheimer and as super hero movies. Also, gotta love the slight hesitance at Dan reading the word "Negros". LOL This is going to be a fun review week for all my favorite white reviewers

I'm still waiting to see Dune 2 with my brother next week, but I did see KFP4 and found it meh. Didn't hate it, but it is the weakest installment, and I REALLY don't like Awkwafina as a voice actor; I can never hear the character and only hear her.

Dan great show as always! I still have a question, hopefully you can answer me. Why is it for Hollywood so important to know what race or ethnic group is watching certain movies more or less? I understand the age and gender demographic split but for me as an European I dont really care what race is watching some movies and I do not get the split on white, black, hispanics etc... I am just curious on this topic and maybe you can answer i. :)

For one Europe is just far whiter than America so there is much more of a demographic split here. The second thing is American media has an obsession with race because it’s used to divide people and attempt to keep the general population from coming together against the elites that run things.
