The once exclusive resorts of Kupari were the place where thousands of Yugoslav officers and their families flourished. During the Croatian War of Independence, the Yugoslav army destroyed the former paradise beaches. After ransacking each of the five hotels, they systematically burned them down, floor by floor.
The hotels - Grand, Kupari, Goričina, Goričine II and Pelegrin - had enough space for 1,600 guests at a time. A nearby campground could accommodate more than 4,000 more. Even Tito had a vacation home in Kupari. The resort was not built exclusively for the military elite, but as its popularity grew, reservations became increasingly difficult unless one had connections.
Today, the beaches that stretch in front of the ruins remain popular, despite the Yugoslavian influence.
