In today's episode, we cover how and where to start a farm in the early game! While we wait for our crops to grow, we start building a home adjacent to the farm and explore some of the materials available in the early parts of the game.

Man this feels like learning *other block game* all over again. I haven't played it since last year, left off on 1.18 which was decently modded, something like 50 mods, but the newer updates just felt like nothing and mj and m$ don't seem to care about the game anymore with all the bad decisions. But at least there's this gem to fill in the void.

If you're missing the feeling of the early days of that other block game, especially the early-game struggle, then Vintage Story is probably a great place to look for that nostalgic feeling again. ;)
@lyricsghost2547

I've always felt that the other block game ceased to be about survival when the very first iron farms and OP items came around. There was no sense of progression whatsoever and dealing with monsters went from "I'm scared, I need to run" to "They're annoying, lemme build." When I want to terraform stuff and be creative, or to literally play God, other block game is still a lot of fun. But the feeling of "anything could kill me if I'm reckless" and the feeling of being scared, actually being inside of a shelter for protection huddling in a corner... it was so nostalgic. I thank the developers for rescuing these moments. This game has A LOT of potential and stuff I've never imagined back them. So, when the unavoidable "this is the better/lesser other block game" comments arrive as this game gets popularity, we really should avoid unnecessary fights because, as of today, in my humble opinion, the both of them have totally different purposes in what the player is likely to experience. And maybe that's the key. Why criticize one way or the other when we can have both?

Don't you worry; we'll come back to finish some details on the house soon enough! ;) That dirt floor isn't going to survive for long under my watch. The rocks are an ugly necessity for now. We built a bunker for temporal storms recently in our new 1.18 world, and for SOME reason the drifters are spawning in what shouldbe the safe area. We're using slabs, the half blocks, and they're in the bottom position for sure, but the squishy team members are being surprised by drifters spawning down there. I wonder if those blocks don't prevent spawns anymore.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
Yeah, slabs haven't worked well for quite a while. I remember having trouble with drifters in places in 1.16 in areas that were slabbed with lower slabs. Sure, there was *reduced* spawning, but not eliminated. Gotta lay down small stones on top of blocks to fully block spawning!

Survival with no thirst? Hope they add fresh/salt water with related mechanics
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 11 ай бұрын
As much as I appreciate a good thirst mechanic in a survival-first game, I think Vintage Story is better without it. The game's more about survival from a homesteading perspective, and I think the added tedium would hurt more than help. That being said, I believe there is at least one mod that adds a thirst mechanic, and in 1.18 there is now a difference between salt- and freshwater, in that crops planted near saltwater will wither and die.

I'm just starting my first playthrough and watched your 1.17 Tropics journey. I was considering just making a run South on day 1 to go from the 47.5° spawn point to a milder climate of maybe 37.5° before setting up base. Do you have any suggestions/tips on feasibility of just foraging my way south? Would the journey (I'm guessing 5-7 days running/foraging) be worth it before my first winter? Thanks for the videos! P.S. Any tricks on finding South without the map?
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for dropping a comment! As for getting to a southerly climate to start... my recommendation is to just use the option in the Customize World settings and set your starting climate to "Warm" or "Hot," depending on your preference! lol But if you'd prefer the challenge of running south instead, you can do it relatively easily once you have a cooking pot and a bowl; you can forage and hunt along the way. Though with the number of bears in the world, you'll definitely want to be a Hunter or Clockmaker to outrun them, or spend a year up north and take some gambeson armor with you to try to survive their hits!
@Johnny_Tambourine
@Johnny_Tambourine Жыл бұрын
@@Kurazarrh Thanks for the response. I've tried the Warm zone but that puts me in Sub-Tropical (Florida/S. California/Mexico) at 30° which is still alot closer to my destination and very helpful for a safer journey. If I compare Latitude ingame and RL our world spawn would be somewhere around the US/Canadian border. Not ideal farmland. Building a trench around your farm is a much better outcome, animals lured in by your crops fall in and stay there and all you have to do is just butcher whatever you need and leave. Crops stay safe and grow, you get fed and survive.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 7 ай бұрын
An even better outcome is fence + trench. Sometimes animals, if they're being chased by other animals, or if they pile up in a corner of your trench, can leap to your farmland. Having a fence as well makes this much less probable.

Yeah that happens sometimes! If it had no death message, it probably burned in the kiln, since animals don't starve in this game.

Yeah that's a server setting. You can turn your dirt into packed dirt in the crafting grid in a 6:6 output. Packed dirt shouldn't be affected by gravity.

Some of it is luck (fertility great map affects how common crops are in a given area); some of it is keeping my eyes peeled and having trained my brain to recognize the slight difference in color\saturation from the background grass. Also you can generally spot crops on the map because they're also a slightly different color there, too!

The abundance of crops is dependent on a density map that the game generates. Sometimes you get unlucky. The best thing to do is to explore, explore, explore! Keep an eye out for grass and plants that are a different color than the surrounding grass.

Clay storage has a considerably lower spoil timer and you go straight for it day one, have some storage ready on day 2 and build a cellar. It is better to just block it up with dirt or stone or hay, do not use doors or anything else that allows daylight and air in. Best thing to keep in the cellar is all your food but most of all all the soup and stews you'll make in sealed crocks. Just hunt animals a lot for fat to seal. Sealed that way it will last for 2+ years and ready for winter when food stocks are low.

I recommend harvesting only wild fully grown food crops as opposed to Kura, you will gain both food and seed and there will be plenty of wild crop out there to sustain you until you get a large seed bank.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 7 ай бұрын
In the early game, unless you really go heavy on exploration, you're going to get a lot more crops by breaking the growing wild crops and using the seeds. Crops in the wild give less than half of their "farmed" versions, and if you're a class like the Blackguard where you have a penalty to wild crop drops, you'll get even worse results (sometimes nothing at all). The wild crops also grow extremely slowly. By the time a baby wild crop grows to maturity and provides less than half of a mature farmed crop, but if you broke it for seeds, you would have at least two full harvests (even just using medium fertility soil), plus the chance to have gotten extra seeds from those harvests. Multiplication matters!

@@KurazarrhI don't see why anyone would play as Blackguard compared to other classes except when they play heavy combat focus or have someone caring for them. I personally play as Malefactor or Commoner compared to the others. The odds of finding enough translocators to make Clockmaker viable is super low, Tailor is not viable until you start farming and even then it's quite a distance between usefulness, Hunter is a good play but the severe drop in ores once you hit late game is also not worth. And when it comes to exploring, that's this whole game's schtick! You gotta explore heavily to find the things you need and in the process find tons of food, which means tons of seed. By day two I would have marked all the food in my location and beyond it and after clay pots are done I gather all of the fully grown food enough to fill 1 pot with seeds. Even then you can live off of berries, fish, meat, and the wild crop you gathered, Way before a harvest comes in.

Don't use logs to make kilns or for burning. Wood has a lot of uses but burning it is not really necessary. You can find peat naturally spawning in the wild ( you might have some right under your house!) it spawns on the surface and way faster, alternatively an even better fire is using charcoal like in this man's lovely guide. Firewood in kilns take 24hrs to finish, peat 18hrs and charcoal I think is 10-12hrs. You can a lot of charcoal really fast and is super important later down the road. (P.S. if you find surface coal that's way better, make sure to mark it!)

Use Terra Preta instead of any other dirt, it is the most rich dirt in terms of nutrients, and is as common as finding clay or peat, it just hides really well. There is a mod available that makes finding it easier.

You don't need to worry about the leaves on trees, trees now drop a good amount of sticks and seeds when chopped down.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 7 ай бұрын
No, they do not. If you're getting a lot of leaves AND seeds from your trees, you're either getting exceptionally lucky or you have the StickEmUp! (or similar) mod installed. In fact, trees in 1.18 are LESS likely to drop sticks and seeds because there is a bug in the game where they are generating with far fewer leaves than they should.

It's its own game. The developer started out doing modding for that other block game but ended up building Vintage Story using an open source tech demo of a similar block-breaking\placing engine.

@@sheeeshmyman6314 It's a reductive outlook on it, but I guess that's one way to put it. It's not built on the other block gamecs engine or anything. The developer started on this game specifically because he couldn't do what we wanted to just buy modding the other game.
