I have been in a similar situation. It was an undercover cop trying to find a particular vehicle that was used for illegally smuggling weapons and drugs. The car was described as white like mine and had the same black mags. Yeah, this anime is loosely based on those stories. I recommend the Donut Media podcast 2 episodes where they talk about the Wangan racing scene history. They don't go into a lot of detail but get the overall story pretty close. Smokey Nagata was without a doubt of the members of the Midnight Racing Team, however he may or may not have been kicked off the team.

Just off the top of my head: 2JZ: Very tough block, unkillable in typical street driving, but attempting to increase horsepower or RPM beyond factory limits will expose a valvetrain weakness (shim spitting) which is very expensive to remedy, and possibly other issues that I don't remember because I can't find that article anymore 4A: See 2JZ, but with oiling issues, terrible power potential, and a flexy block that Toyota themselves couldn't fix RB series: Lots of oiling goofiness; it seems to have more than the usual amount of crankcase turbulence, and requires about twice as much oil cooler surface area as any other engine to get the same effect, with attendant packaging and aero implications. Loves to eat oil pumps; apparently the engine has a vibration around 7-8K RPM that just destroys these no matter how tough they are. Also, long whippy crankshaft and long flexy block SR20: Infamous for its self-disassembling valvetrain which can be rendered nonfunctional just by leaning on the stock rev limiter for too long; common aftermarket "fixes" barely increase max RPM but ensure that the failure becomes catastrophic if/when it does happen. Also coolant-flow weirdness

If you are going to make an engine produce a lot of power, even straight from the factory floor it is equally hard. And you see them do it in baby steps, even for farm equipment there are just minor power increases from model to model. Of course they also have to juggle emissions requirements and noise regulations that may not be something a tuner will have to contend with pending on your location and local legislation.
