Kurozuka super underrated

It has many elements that turn the average anime watcher away from it: lack of moe, too many symbols that may require some deeper knowledge about Japanese culture beyond anime/manga, heavy dramatic tone and a severe lack of the usual slapstick comedy (it does have comedy, although unconventional), no level up through friendship power, a tragic (yet realistic if you think about it) plot that may require another re-watch to fully digest, etc.

Kurozuka is top tier for sure 💯 It has some of the best dystopian feels that you can find in any anime in my opinion.

For some it may require them to re-watch a couple times to fully digest the plot and understand the many cultural symbols scattered throughout the series. Having a basic knowledge of who Benkei and Yoshitsune are also enrich the experience, at least in my case. In a nutshell, from my personal understanding it's an interesting take on what love is: it's not a happy end in which one confesses his/her love to another and the two lovebirds live happily ever after. It's an endless cascade of trials and tribulations. Kuromitsu loves Kuro but while she never dies due to her blood, Kuro will do eventually and in order to keep him by her side for eternity, she has to constantly find him a new body to house his soul. Despite wanting to be relieved of his suffering whenever he regains his memories, Kuro is always instinctively drawn to be reunited to Kuromitsu whenever he wakes up with his memories reset. If he doesn't truly love her, he would never go through all that hassle and yet every single time he instinctively seeks her out, just like a moth drawn towards the flame. Same as IRL, we know love will cause us pain and suffering one day and yet we can't help ourselves but be drawn towards it, with reunion comes parting and every time they're separated Kuro and Kuromitsu never give up and try to find one another again, I think that is truly the essence of love, not the superficial kind in which people break up after getting tired of each other's genitals The higanbana (red spider lily flower) is the main stylistic choice in this series, it symbolizes death and final partings while the butterfly (such as the one landing on Benkei sword in the final fight scene) symbolizes metamorphosis and spiritual rebirth. This is exactly what happens to our poor MC each and every single time. Hope this rambling helps in your understanding of this master piss 😅
