My Kurt playlist • Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, ...
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 - c. April 5, 1994) was an American singer, songwriter and artist. He was the guitarist, lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the rock band Nirvana. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock. He was heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is considered one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock.
Cobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard in 1987 and established it as part of the Seattle music scene that later became known as grunge. After signing with major label DGC Records, Nirvana found global success with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their critically acclaimed second album Nevermind (1991). Although Cobain was hailed as the voice of his generation following Nirvana's sudden success, he resented this, believing his message and artistic vision had been misinterpreted by the public. In addition to "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Cobain wrote many other notable songs for Nirvana, including "Come as You Are", "Lithium", "In Bloom", "Something in the Way", "Heart-Shaped Box", "All Apologies", "About a Girl", "Aneurysm", and "You Know You're Right".
During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with heroin addiction and chronic health problems such as depression. He also struggled with the personal and professional pressures of fame, and he had a tumultuous relationship with his wife, fellow musician Courtney Love. In March 1994, Cobain overdosed on a combination of Champagne and Rohypnol, and he subsequently entered an intervention and underwent a detox program. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle at the age of 27; police concluded he had died on April 5 from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
Cobain was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, in their first year of eligibility in 2014. Rolling Stone included Cobain in its lists of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, 100 Greatest Guitarists, and 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. He was ranked 7th by MTV in the "22 Greatest Voices in Music". In 2006, he was placed 20th by Hit Parader on their list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time".
As an automobile, this 1972 Dodge van has seen better days. But as a pop culture artifact, it's worth over $20,000, thanks to some scribbling Kurt Cobain did on the side during his stint as a roadie for sludge metal pioneers the Melvins.
The car, dubbed the 'Melvan,' was sold last night (Aug. 28) on eBay, where its previous owner, musician Ben Berg, watched the auction conclude with a winning bid of $24,701 -- not a bad price for a 40-year-old set of wheels that he described by writing, "It does run, but could use a new set of tires and a brake job."
Still, it's a far cry from the $99,999.99 the van went for during Berg's original attempt to auction it off in the spring-- a bid that went unpaid because it didn't meet the reserve price he'd set, in addition to some questions regarding the authenticity of the artwork.
This time around, Berg listed the van along with a pair of letters, including one from original Melvins bassist Matt Lukin, verifying that the Kiss-inspired graffiti on the side was indeed scrawled by the future Nirvana frontman.

I first heard Nirvana when I was 11 and I was immediately addicted to Nevermind. My much older cousin showed it to me and I just wanted to listen to it over and over again. It wasn't long before I discovered the mighty MELVINS, which I also immediately became addicted to. In 1996 I was 15 and went to the Cat's Cradle in NC to see the Melvins. It was just them and they played 3 sets. After the show, everyone (quite a lot of people) went out the back of the building. I immediately walked around to the front and went back inside and asked a guy if Buzz was around. He said yeah, he's right over there. I went up and don't really remember what I said, but there was a cooler and Buzz asked if I wanted a Pepsi. We walked out the front of the building and it was just us, and I was a very awkward, quiet, shy 15-year-old and didn't really know what to say. He asked me if I liked the show and the 3 sets, and just started talking to me like a regular dude and I have to tell you, IT WAS SO FREAKIN SURREAL just standing there chatting one-on-one with the main guy who was not only in my favorite band at the time (one of my all-time faves still to this day), but who I knew was also really good friends with Kurt freakin Cobain. We talked for maybe 5 minutes, maybe a bit longer, then all the sudden a bunch of people from the back of the building turned the corner and started yelling BUZZ! BUZZ! and running over and he actually had to start telling people to calm down and not touch him. As soon as that happened I knew it was over, and I remember I said quietly to him I have to go and he just looked at me dead in the eyes and said a soft "Okay, bye..." Then he turned back to the mob and I remember as I was walking away he was backing up with his hands up saying no, no, no because some dude was trying to put a sticker on his forehead. But those 5 or so minutes where it was just me and him standing there softly chatting in the quiet night, it was a very special thing for me and a great memory and I'm glad I got to experience it.

...this is the van that Nirvana toured, lived and slept in during the Bleach era, probably even before their SubPop days back when they didn't have 2 pennies to rub together half of the time. This is back when Dale Grover was their drummer. This vehicle is a piece of national history and seeing it sitting in this dilapidated state is just depressing. Think of all days and nights of the bands equipment being slid in and out of the back of that thing while it sat in an alley behind some sleazy bar or low brow gig..

I am the previous legal owner of the infamous Melvan. It was my very first vehicle after I obtained my driver’s license. It was gifted to me from Matt Lukin’s Mother, whom just wanted it off their Montesano property. I still own the original driver’s seat cover and some old proof of WA registration via Buzz and Matt. The seat cover probably still contains some sort of flatulence and/or sweat DNA.
