April 5, 2024 marks 30 years since the tragic death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Known as "The Voice of a Generation," he was instrumental pioneer of the grunge movement, but his influence and impact goes far beyond any one era and any singular generation. Here, we reflect on the legend's legacy and highlight his influence with clips of several musicians from inside and outside of the rock world.

I remember where is was the day the news broke over the airwaves. I was with my first girlfriend in Washington DC at a record store called Commander salamander. The moment the word was out , two young punk girls that were working behind the counter , broke out into tears and hugged each other while the guys , including me just seem to freeze in time. Sadness wasn’t the word to describe my feelings and anger wasn’t close enough either. After losing my mother in 93 right after my 13th birthday, to losing my only hero ,ever, just months after, ripped my life apart. I learned very early in life, nothing is promised to you and the world owes you nothing.

I always felt that while Dimebag’s loss was tragic and sad, the impact was larger on musicians, guitarists in particular. Cuz he wasn’t so much a personality as he was an astounding guitar player and leader of sorts in the field. His band itself was the movement of the time. No single piece, but a sum of three parts. That’s why, IMO, so many were against this “reunion”. But please don’t get me wrong, he was a stellar guitar player. A “god” Some might say. Stop there or I’ll ruin any point I might have been making haha, and just start pissing people off. And I’m not really a shit stirrer.

Kurt may have wanted to be successful, but that depends on what your perception of "success" truly is. I think that if Nevermind sold 50,000, the amount that the experts believed it would sell, he would have been happy. He wanted to be successful in the alternative world, not this cultural icon. The problem was he had no idea just how much things were going to change, or how big his role would be in changing it. He didn't want all the trappings that came with being an icon, having your life endlessly dissected by tabloids and the media. It was the machine that killed him, kind of like what happened with Michael Jackson.

Decided to go to Seattle on vacation this week. I grew up on 90’s music and took a rock tour (Stalking Seattle). Saw Kurt’s house and the park next to it, went to Layne’s condo and the Moore Theater where Mad Season played. Black Dog Forge where PJ and Soundgarden practiced. The MoPop Museum has a Nirvana exhibit with the first Sub Pop contract Nirvana signed pre Grohl and a lot of other cool stuff. I didn’t realize at the time it was Kurt’s 30th anniversary, man what a special week. RIP Kurt and Layne!

I never thought that, 30 years ago, I would be writing to people all over the world like this about this news. How so many things have evolved, yet Nirvana continue to influence the eternal youth that makes me feel alive inside forever. I was 14 at the time my friend informed me what happened. I was in Paris on a school trip. The absolute elation of being out of my homeland (Ireland) for the first time, and then on my second nite there, I learn he is gone. I was only 9 when Kurt left this earth. But he was the first person I idolized. Nirvana had the biggest influence on who I am today. Good and bad. Never feeling comfortable with myself. Even amongst freinds, I felt like an outsider. But I knew, listening to Nirvana, there was a place out there for people like me.

I knew the “hits” throughout the years growing up and what not but around 2017 I saw Montage of Heck and immediately wanted to learn those songs and play guitar. Being left handed I was just super inspired to learn and play and have been ever since. Thanks Kurdt!

This day is forever burned into my brain. I remember watching the coverage of Kurt's death on MTV & not being able to make sense of it. It was surreal. For those of us who felt like outsiders, bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Cure, & countless others, provided us with a sense of belonging. I'm closer to 50 than I care to admit, but I still find solace in Kurt's music when things get tough. He was a brilliant songwriter.

Wow 😮, 30 years later, where has the time gone? When I heard the news 🗞️ of Kurt’s passing, it put me in a funk 😒 for awhile. Always loved Nirvana’s music back in that time period. I don’t listen 🎧 too much anymore. Every now and then, I’ll listen 👂 to a track or two. It still saddens me though. I truly hope that Kurt’s found true peace ☮️.

I like how two retired SPD officers have stepped forward wanting the case reopened, not reviewed. Norm Stamper regrets not doing the correct job the first time around and would reopen case, and Neil Low has come forward believes that Cobain was murdered. His own autopsy shows that he had over six medications in his system (that's excluding the massive amount of heroin), injuries on his body, probably strangled and several other things that are not public knowledge but are all mentioned in the autopsy despite it be ruled a suicide. Check out the P.I. Tom Grant or KZfaqr AmericanSpyFox because they've gained access to Kurt Cobain's autopsy. Tom Grant through a Doctor in England ( I believe) and AmericanSpyFox through a relative of Kurt Cobain's. It isn't always a group of tin foil hats..sometimes where there is smoke, there is a fire.
@chestrockwell6807

and what steps have they taken to get it reopened? selling books and appearing in a conspiracy theory documentary? those two are grifters who have never cited any actual evidence that would warrant opening up yet a third investigation into this. It is a group of tin foil hatters and the fact you take a clown like American Spy Fox seriously speaks for itself. The autopsy report was a big nothingburger.

I was 20 years old when he died. I remember what I said about it that day. I remember a lot, and I've lived to see generations since inherit some kind of revised history. If you want to know what it was like, ask someone who lived through it, don't form opinions based on second hand stuff.
Kurt Cobain and the day it all changed.
