This was a great review video. I’ve seen this piece at the shop and my current gym so now I’ll have to give it a shot for my accessory work. Great stuff, Kurt!

Great review. I just picked up this machine last week after wanting one for a while. It's spectacular. I didn't think to use it for a split squat - going to try that out! I have the original Pendulum version before Rogers got a hold of it so the way the "bar" is designed, it makes it very convenient to also do Viking Presses which is great.

Thank you for the review. Quick question: can this machine help develop power? For example, are you able to do explosive squat jumps? I am a track athlete and looking for a machine that will help me more explosive. Also, could I add a calf block (similar to the Leqend squat machine) and work the calves too? Love the strength aspect to this machine.

I have not tried to do explosive jumps on the Squat Pro so I don't know how well it would work. The Legend is likely better for that. As far as developing power, I think something that enables you to incorporate band tension would be best. One of the shortcomings of the Rogers Athletic Squat Pro is that I haven't found a good way to incorporate bands. You can definitely add a calf block...I did that prior to getting the Legend Squat Machine. I built a calf block with 2x4's and did Standing calf Raises on the squat pro.

I've used this a couple of times as my squat movement and really like it. I find it harder than the power squat/hack combo machine but I'm doing superslow reps which are absolutely brutal on this My only issue with Rogers machines is they need to have 2x as many grooves for the safety stop pins. Going to the lowest setting is an inch too low for me but the next setting up is too high

Great review. I have this machine in my own garage gym, and I love it. Question: about what would you say is the conversion rate from free weight squats to this machine? I'm just looking for a ballpark range, I realize it will differ from one person to the next based on limb length, stance, depth etc. But in general, how much more weight can be used on this machine compared to a barbell squat? 1.5X as much? 2x as much? Thanks in advance.

Hard to say...it’s different...seems like the load is variable. You don’t feel quite as much tension at the bottom but it’s heavy towards the top. Easier on your knees but you can feel the weight/stress on your traps and upper back at the top. I’d say it’s at least 2X as much that you’ll be able to put on there

@@animal1622 Thanks for the feedback Kurt, you're a beast using that kind of weight with great depth! Looks like I have a long way to go as I am only using 585 at present. I split the weight evenly between top and bottom loading arms. From the conversations I had with my Rogers Athletic sales rep, the lower loading arms are designed to increase the load as you approach lockout, and the upper loading arms increase the load "in the hole." He explained, that if one were to load the bottom arms with more weight than the top arms, one would experience exactly what you describe - heavy towards the top. Have you ever played around with splitting the load evenly between the top and bottom arms? The designer of the machine says that this will cause "one resistance curve to come on as the other falls off," and it certainly feels that way to me. Curious if you feel the same way.

@@EdJacobson77 Thanks for pointing that out. I need to play around with distributing the weight evenly Between top/bottom. Out of habit I fill the bottom first before loading top, but what you said makes sense

@@animal1622 This link may be of interest to you. The inventor of the machine talks about how he "blended" the strength curves here: www.rogersathletic.com/updates/get-strong-blog/conversations-with-dr-ken-leistner-and-tyler-hobson/ He writes: I began to look closely at the squat to solve other problems. Some lifters, myself included, really struggled when coming out of the hole. To counter this specific problem, I created a top loading position that had a strength curve that increased in resistance as you went down. This really loaded the hips and glutes hard. The strength curve dropped off towards the top keeping the quads fresh to help further assist the weak link in the chain. For those that lacked the power to finish strongly I created a bottom loading position that increased in resistance as you rose from the hole. This emphasized the quads more, allowing you to really load them up without putting so much weight on the back in the bottom. After hundreds of hours, I blended those two strength curves so that if you loaded the top and the bottom evenly, as one strength curve came on the other fell off, giving you a very even strength curve.

Why did you choose the squat pro over the new version squat pro XT? Just a cost decision? Thanks
@animal1622
@animal1622 3 жыл бұрын
honestly, the difference in cost...i couldn't justify spending that much extra just to have an extra set of weight horns that i didn't need. I understand that it changes the weight distribution, but as is this machine is plenty challenging and i don't see myself putting more than 6-8 plates per side. It's not like i'm replacing barbell squats, so i don't need the machine to perfectly mimic how weight is distributed in a barbell squat...for someone who can't do barbell squats, that might be the case
