In a heart-wrenching incident, at least 45 Indians were among the 49 people killed when a devastating fire swept through a labour housing facility in Kuwait’s Mangaf area early Wednesday. The tragedy has cast a spotlight on the appalling living conditions faced by migrant workers in the Gulf region. An Indian Air Force aircraft brought the mortal remains of the victims back to India, with 24 of the deceased being from Kerala. The arrival of the remains at Kochi Airport was met by grieving families who are struggling to come to terms with their loss.

Condolences to the families, I know the NBTC company occupying this buildings in Mangaf. We have conducted camp audit when NBTC is our main contractor in TGTU project in KNPC. We found many unsafe condition those days whereby compliance wherenot complief because of the building design. No fire sprinkler fire protection. No fire smoke detector No fire alarm. Building in kuwait do not have fire exits. Over crowded min. 4 to 5 person per room for skilled. 2 3 person for ataff. We found electric and gas stoves on rooms AC are window type Personal belongings of workers hanging every side and corner of the rooms No fire drill no evacuation drill record. No camp safety management. Cigarette butts noticed on rooms, burnt carpets proof of unsafe smoking.
