I'm waiting for a replacement MacBook, so I shot and edited this all on my iPhone 7. As you can see from the date I mention in the beginning, it took me about a week to get the hang of editing in iMovie on my phone. I didn't even attempt to do anything fancy with the audio. Learning how to edit in iMovie on my phone was quite a challenge.
Ebeye, I'm told, is the 5th most crowded island in the world. It's rough around the edges, and even rougher in the middle. There are swarms of children and flies. The cost of living is high, and water is scarce. The contrast between the orderly comfortable life on Kwajalein and the poverty and disorder on Ebeye is extreme.
For an incredibly crowded tiny island, there were very few buildings taller than 2 stories. The result is some of the most crowded living conditions in the world. I can't help but wonder what will become of this place as the sea level rises. Will there be a massive sea wall project, or will these people, many of whom are decendants of refugees from Bikini Atoll, become refugees once again.

Thank you so much for the this video. I loved this place, I called it home for about five months two years ago and whenever I get 'homesick' I like to look at videos and it just takes me right back.

I liked how you didn't talk over the walking sequences, it was nice hearing the island itself. I thought the island would've seemed more crowded than it looked, seeing it is supposed to be the 5th most densely populated island in the world.

I actually really liked Kwajalein. To me it was interesting exploring the WWII wreckage on the beaches and seeing history rusting in the waves. The climate was a little warm for me, but the ocean was perfect. Full of sharks, but otherwise perfect. I don’t really mind living on a little island. It’s peaceful.

I had some good friends who worked on the Island in the late 70's, worked for Global, on the Island, we were all in Saudi Arabia working, and I would look at the Island photos they carried around, the pay wasn't equal to what we made in Saudi but the job and living conditions on the Island were beautiful, I applied for a position with Global, got the offer to work but I followed the oil fields money around the middle east, a way of life most people don't even know exists working abroad!

Thanks Bob. I really wanted to wait till my new MacBook arrived to edit this one, but I got impatient. I'm kind of kicking myself for the odd camera angle on much of the video. I didn't want to wander around Ebeye like a tourist, sticking my camera in people's faces, so I rigged my iPhone up as a wearable camera with mixed results.

Don't beat yourself up. You did a great job with the video. Just so you know, the Marshallese on Ebeye have become very much used to camera and video equipment. So just "do your thing".

@jackdoe3889

No. It's a US military base and only assigned military personnel and their dependent, or contractors can live there. Flown through Kwaj many times, but as I do not qualify, I could not even get off the plane.

@@papabear562 You can visit and live on all the other islands and atolls the Island Hopper flies to. That being Majuro Kosrae Pohnpei Chuuk Yap Palau They are really small and isolated so life can get a bit boring quite quickly. Especially on Kosrae and Yap, the smallest ones.

@@FallofftheMap Ecuador? I was in Quito a couple of years ago. I really dig the climate up there. I can't stand the heat in Texas in the summer. I used to live and work on Saipan in the late 80s and mid to late 90s. I really liked it over there. Always an ocean breeze, never over 90 much. Unlike in the Marshall Islands which are basically atolls, Saipan and Guam has mountains and cliffs, more land mass. Not sinking like Majuro and other atolls. I was on Diego Garcia too. An atoll in the Indian Ocean. Talk about isolation. Ill take a more solid island over atolls any day.

Sounds like you get around even more than I do. I’ve actually scooped out jobs on each of the islands you just mentioned but so far haven’t found any good opportunities other than returning to Kwaj. At least I’ll be working nights if I go, so it won’t be too hot.
@comm2531

@@FallofftheMap very cool. I used to work on ships, a military contract, been around for sure. I shipped for 5 years. I then took a job on Saipan as an aircraft mechanic which is what I've been doing for the last 25 years. (I'm in Texas now)But like you, I'm in a plateau with this messed up pandemic like everyone else. I'm still employed but work sucks right now. And days off I'm confined basically. Boring. And it's hot! Well, sounds like you have a cool job. I never been to Kwajelein but I watch you tube videos look nice. I think I would go "batty" after a couple of months there. Like living on a military base. Nice but a sense of not being reality. Speaking from my experience on Diego Garcia years ago. It would be cool for about 3 weeks. They would have to pay me big bucks to get me there for a year contract.
@FallofftheMap
@FallofftheMap 4 жыл бұрын
I’m kind of the opposite. I don’t mind being stuck on a small island, base, or camp, though summit station in greenland did start to get old after awhile. That was the smallest permanent station I’ve worked. Kwaj was just the right size. There were a few quiet beaches to explore, a couple bars, a PX. It was all I really needed and not so much that I’d waste money or get too distracted. When I’m on a contract I tend to go into workaholic mode so I can justify taking a year or two off between contracts.
