Cienfuegos, the Pearl of the South of Cuba with its maritime environment and natural sites preserves one of the most homogeneous urban centers in Cuba. It is full of classical facades and slender columns that provide an atmosphere reminiscent of 19th-century France, which inspired it. In fact, the city was founded in 1819 by a French emigrant, don Luis D'Clouet.
Cienfuegos is known as the "Pearl of the South of Cuba" and not a surprise, since this small city has managed to seduce travelers from all over the world. Travellers come to see the elegant mix of its cultivated French spirit and its affable Caribbean style. In the bay itself you can read a sign that says "The city I like best", quoting the words of the famous singer Benny Moré.
Cienfuegos is a colorful city where the emerald green of its leafy lands and the turquoise blue of its waters stand out. The province is full of small coves, caves and coral reefs; but its main attraction is really inland, in the waterfalls of El Nicho, a lush natural enclave located in the Sierra de Escambray, within the Parque Natural Topes de Collantes.
Cienfuegos City can be divided into two distinct areas: the central area, where the Prado and Parque Martí are located; and Punta Gorda, a small territory that cuts across the bay and is home to numerous eclectic palaces dating from the early 20th century.
The most fascinating points of interest in the central area are the Parque José Martí, the Paseo del Prado, the Arco del Triunfo, the Catedral de la Purísima Concepción (Cathedral), the Teatro Tomás Terry (Theatre), the Palacio de Gobierno, the Museo de Locomotivas, the Malecón de Cienfuegos, the statue of Benny Moré and many more. While in the area of Punta Gorda stand out: the Palacio Azul, the Club Cienfuegos, the Parque de Esculturas and the Palacio de Valle. A little further away is the monumental Necrópolis Tomás Acea.

Well, many places in Cuba seems to be deserted - there is no many cars and literally you can walk in the middle of the street or even on the only existing motorway. There is no many shops and if there are any, there is almost nothing in them. There is still rationing system in place - for food, so there is no real need for anyone to go to the High Street for shopping as We do in Western World. Will you believe that during our 2 weeks in Cuba we could not buy in any shop any bottled water... Old Havana is slightly different, there is much more tourists and people who lives of tourists have more money. Rural places are not like that and even that Cienfuegos is one of the biggest towns it is really run down. On the other hand Havana is too - there is loads of falling down houses just next block to the touristy places. We have been told that several people are being killed every year by falling down balconies when they walk on the pavements... I am not sure if you have been in Cuba, but I would highly recommend to go as this is eye opener which definitely helps to realize how privilege we are in our countries. Imagine being a doctor in hospital in Cuba earning 50USD a month! This is fact - we have been told that by dentist who is having a second job as a barman in one of the places in Vinales - just to survive... Cuba is one of the safest countries which we have visited, people are lovely and country is truly beautiful, but the communism killed the economy and forced full control on people, exactly the same as it happened in European Eastern block where I am coming from. It takes generation to rebuild and grow back and in Cuba it did not even start as there is no democracy at all...
