I built this boat almost exactly as this. Customized mine to hold a 3.5 hp outboard. Have more than 5 years and countless memories on it with my wife and daughter. So thankful for the video! Still doesn't leak at all. Currently fixin to put the 3rd paint job on it to be ready for summer 2021 on the little Arkansas river in Kansas.

This is basically the same design my Dad did when he built us kids a boat. He had no plans, never built a boat before, but built an 8ft pram in an afternoon. 3/4 ply on the bottom, 1x12 for the sides and transoms, 2x4s for the frame. He even got Fancy and slanted the bow. It was heavy and leaked a bit, but us kids had fun paddling it around the slough for years.

I made one based off of this design, thanks a lot for the great video, it works great! I added hinged bike wheels at the center of mass, attached it to my bike, and went two miles to my local reservoir. It was an awesome project and I'd highly recommend this video to anyone who wants to build one themself. As a side note, I didn't use the most expensive wood or paint and it still worked great.

Built one similar to this while I was stationed at Howard AFB, Canal Zone, Panama. But mine was 8 feet long and 4 feet wide. Caught a lot of peacock bass in that little boat. Lots of people wanted it when I left, so I picked one. Never needed to travel far from launch site, so we used a trolling motor. Used Sheetrock ring fast nails to assemble, then waterproofed the bottom and seams.

I have designed a fold-up pontoon boat. It would have a platform of about 8’ wide by 7 feet long, and it could easily fit into the back of a pickup (folded). Once removed from the pickup bed, the owner “unfolds” it. The pontoons also unfold to create (2) 16” wide x 12” tall by 14’ long pontoons. A very unique feature with my design is that the pontoons are mounted at a 45º angle out to the deck, setting them outward about a foot each, thereby giving the pontoons about a 10’ wide stance.

I made an 8 ft boat out of regular 3/4" plywood and 2x12s with a 48" radius cut off the front and scored the plywood every inch or so on the inside about 1/2" deep to help make the radius. Put a bead of silicone on all the mating surfaces then screwed it down with 1 1/2 deck screws , then put a gallon of Thompson's Water seal in a Hudson sprayer and kept giving it a coat every 20 minutes or so. Added some angle iron at the transom and put a 5 hp Mercury on it. I used it for lake fishing for 4 years and gave it to the people who bought my house, it was still it perfect shape. That was in 1983

I cracked the mast step on a small sailboat I'd made out of wood once. I separated it slightly, moistened it, put Gorilla Glue on it and clamped it in place. It said 85% strength in 15 minutes, and full strength in an hour. By the time that hour had passed it had a mast in is supporting a 131 square foot sail on a 32 square foot boat. Never had a problem with that mast step in the years that followed, and the wind was really up tat first day.

@barking.dog.productions1777
@barking.dog.productions1777 4 жыл бұрын
@@colstace2560 the point was to build a simple boat that anyone can build on the cheap. If you want a fast boat then don't build a Jon-boat as we call them around here. They are perfect for some pond fishing though. easily pushed around with oars or even just a trolling motor, and extremely stable which is what you want if you are fishing a small lake or a pond. I like it. I already have factory built canoes, kayaks, and aluminum V-bottom boats that are good for various purposes... this boat design is excellent for fishing or duck hunting on still waters. Also good for smaller kids to take out alone (on a pond with proper life jackets) since it is so stable. Personally I would angle out the front and put a layer of fiberglass on it (outside only) before adding the runners on the bottom, and painting it. I would also remove the original screws and put final screws from the outside in. No offense intended. I wasn't trying to lecture you, just addressing your concerns.
@bawrytr
@bawrytr 3 жыл бұрын
Just a couple of things - it's better to use a brush or a putty knife to spread out the glue evenly over the surface. It's much better to pre-bore the holes when you are using screws as clamps unless the pieces are clamped up tight. Otherwise you often end up with a gap. The polyurethane will foam a bit normally and make it water tight, but you don't get anything like the full strength. Generally speaking, too, it's better to screw through thinner material into thicker after pre-boring, as well. So here one would pre-bore the ply, and screw into the poplar or the oak runners, except along the edges of the boat where it's much easier to screw up through the oak into the poplar chine logs.

When screwing the strips to the bottom sheet at 6.21, I would have thought that screwing the sheet to the strips is better than screwing the strips to the sheet with the head of the screw on the outside, as the strips give a better anchorage to the screws. Obviously since you have that glue in between I suppose it does not matter, but in the old days we did not have such good glues,

You didn't answer the questions about the width of the boat, why you trimmed it down to 42 instead of a full 48 inches. I also have a question about the three-degree pitch in the back. Why not continue that three degrees up the sides towards the front?--but if you do that, you'd need to cut angles on both the inside runners as well as the sides for the sides for the edges to meet, wouldn't you?--otherwise you're going to have gaps. Or does it not matter?

@Robert, I clicked your channel to see what kind of video expert you are, and you only have one "video" that isn't even a video! LOL It's a slide show! haha With as many dislikes as likes. LOL The video you're criticizing has over 1.5 MILLION views, and over 5,200 likes. I think you have 4, if you don't let the dislikes cancel them. LOL And if you don't like my responding to your shit "video" and shit "comment", then you shouldn't comment on youtube. And for the record, I'm a decent carpenter, and I found this video interesting and fun to watch. So it has ALOT more value than anything you can produce.

Don’t have any videos up, probably should. Working on my second boat build. First was 16’ Dory and this one is 24’ Fishing Dory. Don’t have any negative comments either though. If everyone would build a boat, there would be less bickering on here. Great fun and the end result is valuable. Not to mention getting to tell everyone; “Yep I bulit this boat form the stem to stern.” The ladies smile and the guys turn green. Everyone should give it a go, you will like it. You learn a lot building a boat.

So much easier to build the back sides and front using temporary braces and then fit the bottom on after.

Did you think of 5200 marine grade silicone its permanent.When it drys on a boats center console floor seam and at some point you got to take that center console out.You will tear the fiberglass floor up be for the center console breaks free from the 5200

thank you for sharing, very useful. gorilla glue is great but a bit pricey. are there any cheap boat glues out there we can use.? Can normal white wood glue be made waterproof if we mix it with something?

You cannot put a screw through marine ply of that thickness without prejudice drilling.also u can plainly see the wide flat wood grain detail which is characteristicof softwood ply and no marine ply is made out of white softwood

Great video! One thought: I've found that you always want to use materials made specifically for marine applications when you build a boat, plus I've had inconsistent luck with Gorilla Glue all around. I use Resorcinol (two-part purple stuff) because I'm old, but I think younger boatbuilders are using newer glues. Anyway, that's my suggestion. Really neat design, accessible to beginners and folks who don't have fancy shops. Thanks for the upload!

Marine grade has no voids and better glue- - cheap-o ply thats painted or varnished will be just fine if you aren't gonna keep the boat in the water.

The best way is to coat it with marine grade epoxy and then paint with epoxy paint. Aft that it will last a lifetime. Using marine epoxy can pay for itself too, eliminates the need for marine plywood. A cabinet grade plywood makes a good “core” for your epoxy coating. Not hard to do and makes a very strong boat durable boat.

Marine ply is not at all waterproof. It will rot just as fast as untreated ply. The difference is the quality, it is guaranteed to not have voids in any of the plies, uses a high grade glue, and usually has more plies than the same thickness of regular plywood. No matter what you use it has to be completely sealed from moisture. "Stitch and glue" building is a much better method. Incredibly high strength to weight and much easier to get complex shapes.

adam courville haha what ever I have built a boat stitch and glue fiberglassed and the whole lot, took me ages to build it because of the winter we had here at the time , the cost is expensive also doing it this way , my boat turned out great but a shit load of work, I like simplicity,this little boat they built is perfect if you look after things properly, paint is all that is needed and will last many many years so don’t fool your self.

I remember my brother built a wooden 24 foot cabin cruiser in our back yard back in the sixties. He pulled a 322 inch Buick motor out of an old car and installed it in the boat. It turned out real good.
