April - Ride MTB

Күн бұрын

This video was so many months in the making! Ever since we started riding at Eagle Bike Park, April set it as her goal to one day ride the Jump Trail, Sage Fright. After our trips to Ray's MTB Park, Utah, and California she was feeling more confident than ever, and decide it was time to give it a shot. We started working our way from the top down until the jumps got a little steeper, and In this video April tries her biggest jumps yet!

That was a perfect demonstration of how to teach. Patience and understanding. April wasn't confident for the Whale's Tail. Therefore Kyle does not push her or show disappointment in her. You can't focus on the technical aspects of performance when fear is overriding your thoughts. Great job. Also, I love how you guys are so polite and thoughtful of each other. @@AprilRideMTB April, I was thinking about how to overcome your fear of the Whale's Tale. Ask yourself this, if the Whale's tail was just dirt...would you fear it? I have no experience with these things, but I am pretty sure that the Whale's tale is just an illusion. It's an elevated illusion but regardless, is it really different than a dirt jump? If you can visualize it as a dirt jump, I'm pretty sure you can convince yourself to do it (overcome the fear). The second thing to try is ask yourself, "what is the worst thing that could happen if I don't land this thing correctly? What would that look (and feel) like? If you can accept that, then that may also help you overcome your fear. FYI, I have very few challenges where I ride (middle of nowhere Alaska), but one of the is a set of very uneven stairs made of wood and gravel. There are different flights within those stairs and I have made it down 2 sets which is my limit because the next set is very sketchy. I have weighed the risks and I won't do it. What I am telling you is that I understand fear and consequences and respect whatever you decide (like Kyle). Best of luck...Dan

April is a badass. It takes a lot of maturity to pass on something you want to do so bad like that whale tail. But if you’re not feeling it, it’s best to leave it for another day. Thanks Jason! We got a new dirt jump park last year (the one in the how to jump video) and I think just practicing on the small jumps there built my confidence for these jumps. Then when we did a trip to Virgin in March I got to see the biggest jumps I have ever seen and hit the smallest one I could find. After a week of watching people send the rampage sites I came home and looked a these jumps with more confidence.

Wow April YOU ARE A BEAST NOW on the bike!! Kyle is a great teacher for many of us. I follow and listen to Lee McCormack, Alex Bogusky and am a 50yr old school hardtail mountain biker from the early 80s. Thank you all for what you give back to us. Looks like April is gonna fly higher than Kyle real soon!

it feels comfortable to see that I'm not the only one who cries when I can't afford a jump or some difficult and technical part on the downhill. It's okey to be frustrated and afraid, and if this makes you cry, it's OK. April your flow is so beautiful. Keep going!!! And yeah, you are lucky to have your boyfriend who treats you that patient. Mine's it's the same and it's very helpful to improve.

Nice! I am definitely no professional, but confidence plays a big role. People who take jumps and not feel confident usually end up wrecking. Its not that they don't have the skills to do it, but man, once you get in your head, its hard to get out of it. Just keep it up! You're killing it!

Thanks so much Jon, yeah the confidence part is so huge. I always say Confidence = Preparation x Visualization. Once you can see it going well in your head, then you are pretty much ready, but if the outcome is blank or negative in your head then you need a little more prep.

This one had all the highs and lows. If you arent smiling at the 8 min mark then you are probably sleeping. And if you arent sharing in the sadness when she's standing atop the whale tail near the end then you aren't human. Calling it before you get hurt is always a great. Idea. Now I'm gonna go out and ride my bike and see if I can try conquering one of my fears as well. Keep it up.

Kyle you are such a great coach. You're the kind of coach someone can really learn a lot from because of your patients, approach, and of coarse knowledge of riding. I'm nowhere near your level but I'm trying to teach my wife how to ride. Even green trails can be tricky for her as shes never ridden a bike until recently. Having that kind of patients is so hard sometimes, when your comfortable on a bike its difficult to understand how the other person feels. I'm learning a lot from you watching your videos, thank you for putting in the work for us. April you are doing amazing and watching the two of you interact puts a smile on my face. I have to get my wife hooked on your videos I know she'll love them.

@AprilRideMTB
@AprilRideMTB 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you John! I had to look up what a ringer is haha. But I am not one of those. I do have a solid background of motocross that helps me a lot with learning MTB, not everything transfers the same though, so that is what we show. We are also very honest if I am already skilled at something, like for example in our how to jump video we said I already know how to jump so we weren't teaching me "how to", but that also doesn't mean I can go and hit any jump I want now haha -April

Like I've said April... You AMAZE ME by taking those jumps alone (shows WAY more skill than mine). AND; You not finishing the whail tail is just SMART. My setup speed would be as slow (if not maybe slower). And I KNOW I would not clear that gap. So well done. WELL DONE!

Wow! I _really_ *appreciate* you guys sharing the real struggle - that's what keeps this channel relatable! 🤙🏻 I can see how dialling in a bunch of movements for this short of a feature, the whale tail i mean, is a challenge. Throwing a *_new_* bike into the mix surely doesn't help and makes it easy to miss a beat. Kyle, you did a great job coaching her to get this far and April, calling it if you feel out of tune ain't no shame - it's a skill that needs mastering too! Thanks for taking us along. ⛵️

Amazing way to show your new bike, April! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for showing the success along with the works in progress. I’ve had that experience of fear too and needed to sit down and take a minute, sometimes to cry, before I can get up to move on. Seeing you do it too, and showing the world without shame, really touched me and made me feel better about the obstacles that I’m working on. I’m so proud of what you’ve accomplished. You and Kyle have inspired me to push my riding so much further than I would have thought possible in the year that I’ve been watching you. I’m more of a technical trail rider and frankly I (still) get uncomfortable when both my wheels leave the ground, but I’ve started to play around with pumping and little pops and I’m having *so* much fun. I don’t know if I’ll ever have the guts to take on anything like sage fright, but I’ll never forget that you did.

April, that was some freakin' badass riding combined with good judgment when it didn't feel right (yet!) on the whale tail...you had an epic win with nailing the new jumps and ended the day with bike & body intact. Huge respect to you for including your 1st attempts at the jumps and apprehension/frustration at the whale tale...you show the genuine experience while many others only want viewers to see when things go perfectly for them. Your MTB progression has been insane...the whale tale's only a matter of time. Kyle, you're a truly gifted coach & human being. We could all take a life-lesson from how you guys treat each other. Thanks for all you guys bring to the MTB community! Cheers from Chico :)

April, you have sooooo got the whale tail in your skill set. After clearing all the gaps, step ups and step downs on the rest of the trail you can certainly boss this timber feature! Getting onto it is the tough part, box ticked, the step down off is easier as speed on plus gravity will take care of the that. It may help to stand at the side and visualise the the gaps filled like you're riding and pumping through rollers and see yourself flowing on and off. Then at the top of the trail do like skiers do, close your eyes, visualise yourself doing the whole trail as smooth as you can. The only fear is what you take with you and can't get you through but your skillset and ability certainly will. Go girl, you got this!!
