I have only backpack camped 1 time in my life. Im a 50 yr old married woman who loves the outdoors. I freaking love your channel. I think I found you because I watch a lot of mountain climbing videos and Im a history junky. The algorithm led me here and I have totally invested myself in your content from camping to mystery and crime. I live in Alaska and have only recently in the last 2 yrs started camping there but we have always camped in Georgia our home state. A lot of the products you speak on still helps me with my simplicity of camping and day hikes. Thanks so much for the laughs and education.

Normally I would scoff at the foam pad, but I've camped in Kalalau, and pretty much any inflatable sleeping pad is going to be much too warm. I ended up sleeping on the tent floor. Also, while you'll want to bring the rain fly with you, ditching it at night to allow the heat and humidity inside your tent escape is essential -- so bring a tarp. No single-wall tents for this hike.

My NeoAir lasted about 15 years of heavy use, at least 3-4K or miles on it over that time. What finally killed it was using it on a concrete Terracotta floor for a few months in my dad's house in Florida after he passed away last winter (he almost made it to a 100!), while we were fixing up and cleaning out the place for sale. Should have put my Tyvak under it. (My sister got the bed).

My first overseas hike was that Kauai trail back in 1997. I remember being WAY heavy in the gear department! I should've left probably 75% of what I had with me in the rental parked by beach at roads end. Needless to say, I did learn a lot that hike & sweated way more than I needed to. Fantastic trail but an over abundance of choppers overhead. Great when nightfall came & they were gone

I'm from Hawaii and did a bunch of camping as a kid and my mom made sleeping bags for us out of twin sheets. This was a long, long time ago and that was summer. A fleece blanket would be about perfect actually. Now I have a nylon blanket from Cotopaxi that has a thin wool batting layer inside. :)

@@KyleHatesHiking camping in a non-stop gale on a beach a couple of summers ago I used the large MSR tent pegs and mine was the only tent that didn't blow down. Friends had the smaller version and they didn't work - both tents went cartwheeling off into the bushes several times. Well worth the extra weight.
@tanstaafl1960
@tanstaafl1960 Жыл бұрын
Sand or snow stakes might be worth acquiring if those are conditions you're dealing with frequently. But a good technique is to 'dead-man' -- tying your lines to the middle of your stakes and burying them horizontally. Piling rocks on top of a horizontal tent stake can also work, as Kyle mentioned. Bigger stakes mean more bulk and weight.

I have my Garmin ON my body...its in a pocket on my sports bra with its neck tie around my neck, it's not leaving my body lol, But Find a place ON your body..so many people have it on the pack shoulder, BUT if you've set your pack down and or its ripped from you like on a water crossing dunk..it's gonna be gone..and you NEED it! you will want that GPS ON you! Classic example happened last year here in my province, Guy had a GPS on his pack, set it down and was admiring the view..slipped on loose gravel and fell 80 ft to a broken leg and arm..His pack was sitting up the mountain with its GPS. He luckily was found by another hiker 5..yes, FIVE! hours later! and they called in the help and he was rescued. You never never know what can happen to you in the back country!

I know you've said in the past how you despise water bladders/hoses....What about the SmartWater bottle/hose conversion? Made one before I bought one on GGG for $28. I'm liking it so far. I hate stopping/slowing to pull out a bottle from a side pocket. I tend to ignore my thirst because of this and keep going and before I know it, I'm gassing out wondering why. I think the conversion is a nice medium between having a water bladder & not. If anybody here has tried them, what do ya think?

@KyleHatesHiking
@KyleHatesHiking Жыл бұрын
I know exactly what your problem is, this happened to me years back and I've seen it happen to SO MANY other people. The problem is you're screwing the bottle too tight onto the filter. This causes the o-ring to come off, happens all the time. Instead, screw the bottle on so that it's firmly in place but do NOT screw it on really tight. This will solve the problem, hope that made sense.

are there any gps devices that don't require monthly subscriptions and costs per text message?

I think the satellite devices all have some kind of subscription for messages. You can get simple PLBs though that only have an SOS button. No GPS or message capabilities. They are a one and done price.
