Is not just the toilet you’re going to need to plug. It’s the entire sewer system for your house or apartment if it’s a prolonged grid down event. Especially if you don’t have a backflow preventer attached to your outgoing sewer line to prevent all of waste from coming up through your sink and laundry pipes. You need to find the lowest clean out drain and plug that or like previously mentioned sewage will be bubbling up from your other pipes as the city pipes fill up because it’s not being pumped away.

Back in the early 70's when I was in high school my grandmother told me she much preferred living "now" and that she didn't believe in the good old days. One major reason was indoor toilets.

This is a good video for people to consider what they'll do in the event of a grid collapse. People are stupid and it won't take long for the sewer lines to fill and back up into people's homes. That's why it is vital to keep the necessary tools and correct size PVC caps on hand; to be able to cut the sewer line (as close to the main as possible - so if service is restored, you would have much less repair/replacement work) and cap both ends, preventing sewage from backing up into your house. If you have indoor access to the line after all other connections, you could cap it inside, but that would likely require digging up the rest of the line in the future. You can also have a back-up valve installed, but I would still keep the end caps on hand, just in case. I don't think most people think of this, even many preppers.

I would fill a plastic bag with dirt and then put it in the hole. You get the plastic barrier for smells plus the malleable dirt than can be formed into the hole and heavy enough to stay put. Also, water in P traps will evaporate if you don’t run water through them like once a month. So remember to put water in them in SHTF or you’re going to get the sewer smell in your house. That happens now too, I’m a plumber and I go out to check smells that people are getting and it’s usually in a bathroom where they never use the tub or just never use it in general. Good video

I was just thinking about that. I'm on a slab and have a drain under my water heater that I'd imagine doesn't get used too often. I had recently read that you should pour a little water and oil down there to keep the drain from drying out. I don't know how much truth there is to that.
@eyepodoblivion1189
@eyepodoblivion1189 6 ай бұрын
@@Jackie_W82 sometimes that drain hole in a slab just goes into the pea gravel that’s under the house and drains into the ground. Other times it is an actual drain. Yeah, the oil and water mixture is a good trick. The oil sits on top of the water and prevents evaporation.

You could simply leave the bowl partially filled with water; only having a few drops of clean water, for the garbage bag transfer. In our old unused basement toilet, we kept the bowl filled with vegetable oil (to prevent it from drying out) which would keep in the stink locked in.

Go to a thrift store, and buy a bedside commode that has the bucket in it and you will save yourself a lot of work you just have to store it somewhere. You can still use a garbage bag in there with some kitty litter. And also the hat that she's stuck into the toilet and the other video. It just saves you the work of having to do all that stuff to the toilet. I appreciate your videos and efforts. Just adding another idea out there . When a family member was ill and had the bedside commode, we thought that would always be a good thing to have in the event of a hurricane or storm and unable to use traditional toilet if sewer system went down
@AnnBearForFreedom
@AnnBearForFreedom 7 ай бұрын
I use a heavy-duty bedside commode daily, because of my disability. (The transfer onto an actual toilet is too dangerous for me) I cover the urine and poo in the bucket with wood pellets (100% wood, no accelerants), like for woodstoves. They expand when wet, and are compostable or burnable. Cheaper even than kitty litter, if you shop around. But yeah, excellent idea!

Thanks for another great video. Jonathan you are so clear and easy to listen to. My plan is to use a portable, temporary, water filled, flood barrier. It's a plastic bag that you fill with water. It has a threaded cap. I can put the barrier into the hole then fill it with enough water to seal the hole. The water stays inside the barrier, you see. The water weight should keep it in place, I think. It's large enough to where I don't worry about losing it down the plumbing. I'll just keep the excess material laying in the bowl. When the sanitation system is working again, I'll just drain the barrier and remove it. It folds to next to nothing for storage and is reusable. I think any water tight, heavy duty bag you could put enough water into to plug the hole would do. Search for PIG reusable water filled barrier.

When we built our house I had the plumber install an easy access clean out tee as the sewer entered the house so I can install a back flow plug/test plug. I the power grid is down for a long length of time and people continue to flush the sewer will fill up and flow back into your home. We have several ways one is a portable chemical toilet and can be dumped into a man hole if needed and 5 gallon pail with a bag and fitted seat, last resort the bush.

So I have a question. This is fantastic for of the water goes out and you can’t flush. But what if you’re on grid and the city sewer system stops running? We know how people are, they’ll try to use the system anyway because they don’t know how it works. How do we keep the sewage from backing up into our homes? I fully understand there may be no answer to this question. There may be nothing that can block the amount of pressure that may eventually build up. Solution or no, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. My question has been answered 👍

THE MOST OVERLOOKED ASPECT OF HOME PLUMBING is the water shutoff valves under your sinks and behind/under the toilet. Make sure the valve handle turns to shut off water supply. Many times corrosion forms and impossible to turn or in more severe instances leaks when turning. This isn't just a shtf situation but an every day precaution if a leak occurs.

So for me, the process goes like this...turn off the water into the toilet with the handle on the wall in the back. Then flush one last time. Then bail out the rest of the water in the bowl and dry the bowl as best you can. Then plug the hole in the bottom of the bowl with the crisco-rags in a thin plastic bag. Why not just keep a little bleach water in the toilet to keep acting as a p-trap? I know that'd leave a little bleach water on the bottom of the bag, but in a shtf scenario, that's not really a dealbreaker; just shake/wipe the bleach water off, right? I'd imagine the primary reason would be to block any backups from a failed sewer system, but then all your drains would have to be blocked, right? All sinks, toilets, showers, washer, etc drains. But is this step necessary as long as the sewers aren't backed up?
