I was looking forward to this new episode of Italian Phrases! The Instagram posts and stories along with the fantastic Q&A session were so entertaining, and now we have another chance to see Kylie and Brian together. When I went to Italy last year, I only new a little Italian but I was too nervous to speak it because I was afraid of making a mistake. I'm going to try not to do that this time. I'm hoping that the italian people will appreciate the effort.

It is "RENA" (pronounce it with a very closed "E", in way somehow approaching to an hypotethical English "ray-nah", but remenber that in Italian that "circa / almost" "AY" sound has no [i] coda, it is not a diphthong). It is a time-honoured word, coming from Etruscan language and early acquired by Latin language, in the form "HARENA" (with a long, therefore closed, E). The more bookish modern Italian word "ARENA" (in such a case generally pronounced with a more open "E", since that is the tendency with bookish words) comes from the same origin and means more or less the same as in Latin and as English "arena" (the sandy central space of an amphitheater, a bullring and so on, since there is sand on the ground, in them) and, by extension, also for the names of some old Italian stadiums (even if there was grass, in them, not sand...)

Kylie! Usually I am quite skeptical about videos or guides pretending to tell some kinda 'secret truth' about my beloved complicated Italia, but I was simply overwhelmed by your video! It's fresh, light, incredibly correct: the difference between beach/mare, the fact we Italian tend to spend the whole day at the sea - pardon, the beach - tells a lot how the sea is an all-embracing concept in our world. There's only one mistake: you wrote 'qual'è', but it's wrong. The adjective 'quale' has also a standalone form 'qual' which doesn't need the apostrophe, so it's 'qual è'. You can use the apostrophe only in case it's a plural e.g. 'qual'erano...' A part this detail the video is spotless and left me willing to watch all the others... you really made me smiling and laughing a lot, I love it! :)

"Lido", indeed, means the part of the coast (every part of it, EVEN IF WITHOUT any beach club) including the beach or rocks (and possibly also the cliffs or dunes behind it) facing the sea in a certain place. Using the word "lido" to mean a beach club is an habit quite recent and a highly regionally characterized one, since the tendency is peculiar to Southern Italy. I would not recommend such an usage for "beach club". The formal, administrative, word for a "beach club" is "Stabilimento balneare", wich is currently shortened, in oral language, in "Stabilimento" or, more frequently, in popular language, in "Bagno" (just like a swim or a bath...), sometimes also (in the plural form, used also for a singular beach club) "i bagni" ("andare sui bagni" = "going to / attending the beach club(s)" is a typical expression used in contrast to "andare alla spiaggia libera" = "going to / attending the free beach"). Maybe the popular expression in the plural ("i bagni") comes from ancient things like "i bagni termali" = "the thermal baths" / "the spa(s)", pre-existing and then applied to beach clubs in the early '900s, or by the habit of using it for the commercial names of every beach club, followed by a personal name or a common name better clarifying the club (like "Bagni Fiorella", "Bagni Luana", "Bagni Laura" or "Bagni Impero", "Bagni Italia", "Bagni Delfino", "Bagni Roma" / "Bagni Lido" and so on...). In any case, I would discourage the usage of "lido" in the meaning of "beach club", for the two above mentioned reasons: it has a scent both of something RECENT (disapproved just like any neologism that invades the field of another already existing word) and of something STRONGLY CHARACTERIZED IN A DEEP REGIONAL SENSE.
