Agreed. I'm hot for a scooter all of the sudden and getting sweet on the Kymco. Problem is there's a world of intel on the Burgman. Ebay parts and Suzuki dealers. I suppose they have to start somewhere in our market and if it's a better scooter you ought to reward them for their effort. In truth its most likely that you'll not need much and if anything you'll just wait a bit longer. Maintenance items could just be ordered in advance if need be. I'm actually stocking up on everything as the expert leadership we're experiencing ensures that it will only cost more in 6 months. So I'm buying at least 2 years worth of filters, oil, brake pads etc. Anyway, it looks like these things would have you just jumping on for more short trips and light errands. I guess I'm getting old. Im toying with talking to the BMW about trading my S1000rr for a scooter. Hurts to think about.

@@autonomousindividual7780 Well, why not just take a step down into a lighter adventure Honda, and then think scooter for later? But, you still have to swing over the seat on the former. So. Try one out, and go from there...you will know. And still have some open air time for riding:) I am finding it a lot of fun!:) And much more powerful than I thought they would be! Who knew! OK> Europeans knew...we're just behind, as usual!LOL

@@vickikgibson9470 OH yeah, my wife's from France and on a trip I witnessed the scooter madness there. Saw a pretty nasty crash. The streets are covered with them. Best think for a city, but here in open spaces I suspect people will stick with big bikes until they force the electric thing. I see some good used deals already.
@vickikgibson9470
@vickikgibson9470 2 жыл бұрын
@@autonomousindividual7780 The problem for electric is the cold here. Nothing lasts in the cold. And gas is far more reliable for distances. There is not enough infrastructure here, nor will be for some time. We have such LONG distances to go, and we just can't wait for 4-6 hours to get going again after 400 or less miles! Not only that, but lithium is not sustainable...which people forget about. Anyway, a scooter for now is a great way to just keep mobile, and at 65 miles per gallon, that's a pretty good distance for around the city or a short ride to Waterton lakes etc.:) I think other clean fuels will take over before the electric idea is really in line. Especially in colder climates like ours. But, who knows! Maybe one of the UFOs will drop us an idea or two between now and then, eh?LOL

Have a Burgman 650. Like the AK 550. The Burgman WILL match the speed of both of the other bikes in this video. Documented over 112 actual mph and early models documented over 120 mph per highway patrol speed radar. The speedo on my Burgman is about 10% high. The speedo on my previous Honda CTX1300 was spot on exactly the same as my GPS unit (and those radar signs posted in some places). The Burgman 400 is the model that has been out since 1998. The Burgman 650 didn't show up until 2002 overseas and in the USA in 2003. The video implies that the Burgman 650 does not have the engine mid mounted in the frame. But it does have a mid mounted engine in the frame same as the other 2 scooters being compared. The final drive is what is different in the Burgman which has a gear train final drive. And to counter the comment from a few days ago these all are fuel injected 4 stroke engines with no smoke and no "buzz" at all but all are very smooth operating motors. At least as good or better than standard bikes in the same size class. I've owned Cruisers, a GW, and Sport touring bikes. All of these compare favorably to any of those. Yes, a side by side picture would've been good for this video. Oh, and the Kymco weight stat is dry weight, not wet (with all fluids/gas added). The Burgman stated weight is wet and some say as low as 610lbs, up to just over 625lbs... wet. These are all as stated... motorcycles dressed up somewhat like scooters.

@@WSleeuwits it's not really that high speed is important. It's that this video is about comparing these scooters and presenting somewhat significantly wrong details is not how to properly compare. Besides, theses are super scooters, or more commonly called maxi scooters, and are more motorcycle than what is typically a scooter. And everyone who rides wants to know their ride can more than keep up in traffic. None of these machines are sluggish by any sense of the word.

@@RobertShwery ......Which is why, if I can't get what I really want, up here in Canada, I'll settle for a 400cc class. Still hoping that the new Honda Forza 350 or Yamaha TriCity 300 does, many, many more dealers and shops for those brands than KYMCO or Piaggio. Its not about the speed, its about enjoying the ride, which is the one thing scooterists have in common with choppers and cruisers, we both just want to lob along, enjoying the scenery, for the most part. AKA a 'zen' experience.

This is a very comprehensive review of the three bikes although it would seem you prefer the Kymco. I have a 2009 version of the Suzuki Burgman AN 650 Executive. In Australia (where I live) the heated grips and seat did not come as part of the package. The Burgman is no longer sold in Australia and neither is the BMW - I am not sure if the Kymco is available. In its prime the Suzuki was in my opinion the benchmark for maxi scooters. The 650 engine is plenty responsive and the transmission wors well especially on the highway where the 6th gear over drive makes for better fuel economy. The electrically adjustable screen is great for keeping the wind off at high speed on the highway but allows for good air flow at low speeds. There is a lot of storage in the dash and under the seat (two full face helmets if packed correctly) a top box completes the package. I don't know about the Kymco but the BMW in any version had less in dash storage and could only hold on helmet. Probably the Kymco represents better value for money at a lower price although all the maxi scooters are expensive to put on the road (in Australia). I have owned a few bikes both two-wheelers and three wheelers including a Piaggio MP3 400. I've enjoyed riding all of them. I like my Burgman as much as I liked my Kawasaki Voyager which I have now swapped for a Can Am Spyder. Thanks for your review. As I'm sure you've heard it's not what you ride it is the ride that is important.

How is this bike on wind management? Also how is it seating wise? The Kymco 300 and Yamy Xmas are way to cramped for my older hips and knees at 6 foot 32 inseam. I did see someone removed the rear butt stop or rest to gain better body extension. Doubt any dealer would let me test one, heck nearest one is in Toledo at Honda East, I am outside of Dayton. There is an power equipment dealer only 2 miles away from me in Arcanum, OH that has carried the 300 downtown Kymco and smaller models that does not stock the AK 550, but I assume could order one in. I had the Xciting 500 8 years ago. I liked it, and had good power but did not turn in as good as my motorcycles. I do want a smaller bike to go with my Victory Cross Country for a lot of these weekday 50 mile trips. I have a feeling this AK 550 could do the job and rather well. Sure like that they made it perform more like a motorcycle by improving the shocks, frame strength, and much less unsprung weight.

I will be trading up to a Kymco AK550 in the next year, however. Looking forward to a tad more power. One thing that I did not find with my 300i that you did, is that the mirrors on it work just perfect for me. No issues having a perfect sight picture behind me at all. Ive been telling the wife I want a scooter now that I'm over 70. I have 9 motorcycles in my stable now. Suoer Tenere, Ducati Elefant, Hot Rodded KLR, a bunch of Honda trail bikes and 2 old flat tracker Yamaha XWS 650's. Told her I'd like to get to one big maxi scooter and call it good. Sell the rest off cuz they all need atantion from time to time I don't want to do anymore. I just want something simple to ride. I rode a Lambreetta 150 all through High School in the 60's in the USA. Talk about learning to have thick skin..... I've been talking Burgman 650 or BMW 650, but after watching this video I'm going to have to swing by the Kymco Dealer (12 miles from me) and check the fit on the Kymko AK550. Since Honda is taking their sweet time bringing their bigger ADV Scooters to the US. I'm a 6'2" retired Power Lineman, so I'm not a little guy. Big arms and chest, small waist And still in good shape, not overweight. Son wants me to buy a Harley like his, but I'm not a Harley Guy. And a Maxi Scoot sounds like the perfect ride to roll up on the back of our big RV so the wife and I can go exploring. But, I'm not opposed to doing long cross country trips on the 550. Heck after I retired I took off on the KLR for 5 weeks and just went camping from Texas all the way to Montana and back with some buddies on the Continental Diivide Ride. I sure like that White Kymc0! I have a thing for white bikes, cars, pickups and RV's.... Excellent comparison. Going to go check out the Kymco tomorrow.

Well, my experience is similar to Alvin Prince: I own and love my 2011 Bergman Exec. This year looked at a new maxi-Scooter and was shocked when I saw the Silver Wing, BMW 650 GT and Bergman 650 all DISCONTINUED (at least for the USA market). So forced to consider the Kymco. I do appreciate your 'comparison' but WOW, shocked at a couple of the obvious omissions! Hope you can provide answers to some important details: 1) the BMW and Suzuki have plexiglass front shields that can raise and lower. This is excellent.... up on the highway, and down off of it! Does the Kymco also? 2) What is the amount of storage area? I love that I can go to store, and pack up a load of grocerys into my Suzuki in the large storage area. 3) a little more subjective, but can you give an opinion: If I'm on the interstate and passing trucks at 80 mph, will I be wishing I had back my Suzuki 'heavy' girl? Yikes 460 lbs sounds light.... how does it handle high winds and wind shear compared to the heavier bike? I truly hope someone can address these as I'm intrigued with the Kymco (hey.... seems to be the Only choice nowadays!) but want to know about these three items. Thanks!

Overall good teview.....now the BUT: I bought my burgman 650 new in 2006. Have had ZERO issues with it. Just put on my 2nd set of new tires this year. Rides 2 comfortably. Quicker than many v6 cars. Easy on the body as it takes zero pressure to keep upright. Most miles in one day - 378. My top speed: 114 And it was NOT topped out. Wasn't trying to top it out. Was pissed as a carload of teens were screwing around in a car and I wanted some distance so I let er eat. Looked down, saw 114, thought: that's fast enough and if they want to pass me - have at it. Well, they did as I was riding 1 handed as turned backward, gave them the stare down and the one fingered international greeting. I love my Burgman. Will never ride anything else. :)

I would like to discuss an issue that you didn't much go into. I ride a 2020 Kymco Agility 125 scooter (which is perfect for local travel). I also ride a 2014 Honda NSS300 maxi for longer commutes. Here in Boston there are two Kymco dealers. One of them has a AK550 in the showroom. My experience has been that dealers carry little (and mostly no) replacement part inventory for Kymco products. And the Kymco part replacement wait ranges from several weeks to several MONTHS to replace common items like a broken mirror or a broken tail light. Yes, I said months! (On the Agility, the tail lights are on long flimsy stalks - as are the side mirrors - which are the first to go if the scooter should fall over.) What if a crucial engine part, say a water pump or an ECU, needs replacement? Am I supposed to just park the bike for weeks or months waiting for a replacement part? This wait time is ridiculous and makes me very wary of purchasing another Kymco product in the future unless Kymco remedies this disgraceful distribution logjam.

Still waiting for KYMCO to send these to Canada, hell, the French or Spanish models would be good enough without changes needed. You mention MP3, well the KYMCO CV3 is based on the AK550 platform and in other markets, gets quick attach sidebags and topbox for touring. Waiting, but no word, just leftover 2015 MyRoad 700i left, I guess most bikers just do not have product knowledge up here in the GWN, but I do, been following the MyRoad since it's mid-2000s release.

You can't go wrong with the AK550! Don't go by reviews of people that only put 30 to 100 miles and probably only rode 3 bikes in their life.

Another consideration is the service intervals. In the UK, Kymco specify a service every 3000 miles (5000 Kms). On the Burgman AN400, it's 3500 miles, so not much difference. However, I notice that Honda on their scooters (Forza 300/350/750 and Adv350) now specify 8000 mile service intervals. If, like me, you cover high mileages and maybe don't service your own scooter, then that makes a big difference to running costs.
@ClevelandMoto
@ClevelandMoto 2 жыл бұрын
Fiat spec’d a service interval at 10,000 miles for our 500c - by 40k the head gasket failed. So much for these longer service intervals.
@ericthexm
@ericthexm 2 жыл бұрын
@@ClevelandMoto interesting, but maybe a one off. In our family, we've had 4 diesel Fiat Pandas ( the same mechanicals as the 500). I have serviced three of them and they jointly covered in excess 320 k miles with no mechanical issues. The fourth vehicle was dealer serviced and suffered engine failure at 62k miles. Cheap oil, skipping the filter change (very hard for the client to check) might have been factors. You might just have been unlucky. Modern synthetic oils are good for 10k miles or more in water-cooled vehicles.

Most people do not know that in the 1950s Kymco was a Taiwan based protege/subsidiary of Honda, initially manufacturing parts but later manufacturing complete motorcycles (such as the 1964 Honda C200) and badging them as Honda. About that time, Kymco bought out Honda’s interest in Kymco and later began selling bikes and scoots under the Kymco name. Owing to their early collaboration with Honda, Kymco understands what high quality is all about. I have owned two Kymco scooters as well as bikes and scoots from Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Vespa, all good brands, but I can tell you as far as good design and long term durability, Kymco is as good as any of them. I have owned a 2006 Kymco People 250 scooter since 2008 and it has been a wonderful scooter. One thing that is a little surprising to me is the overall weight of the scooters in the comparison. I knew my People 250 was a bit heavy for a scooter at 357 pounds (dry weight), but all three of the maxi scooters compared have a dry weight in excess of my 2005 BMW 1200GS, which is 439 pounds dry, 490 wet and fully fueled

I would. The Burgman 650 is currently discontinued after 2018. If you can find one for a good price the Burgman is still a very good buy. The Kymco AK 550 has LED lights all around and many updates the Burgman doesn't have. It's lighter weight and still easily keeps up or possibly passes the Burgman. Maintenance looks to be easier on the Kymco also (I have downloaded the service manual for my own investigation). New price is lower for the Kymco. I ride a Burgman AN400 (2020) and test rode an AK550 yesterday. Wow, amazing performance but, as with many bikes and scooters, the stock screen is inadequate for touring. I am 5'9" with 31" inseam but, after riding my Burgman, I felt nervous at not being able to flat-foot on the AK500. I think this is to do with the width of the seat as much as the height. Also, the underseat storage on the AK550 is not as large as the AN400. I really wanted to love the AK550 because I'd like to have a more comfortable legal-limit top-speed but at first acquaintance it didn't say 'buy me'. It does ride and sound like a motorbike though.

Eric, good answer. I had a AK 550 but I did not love it. The dashboard is a mess and I could not read it especially with sunshine. And it is not that comfortable. It has a topspeed way over 140k/h has good suspension and it is cheap to operate. 1:28/30 km/l. It is also easy to handle because is is fairly low built. @@greetenmax Hi Max. It's good that you are enjoying the AN400. After having owned an AK550, do you not find the Burgman a little underpowered? The 140 kmh (86mph, for me in the UK) looks okay on paper but I find that at any speed over 70mph (112 kmh) the engine sounds a little harsh. Other than that, I love the Burgman. Good storage. Low seating position. Economical. Comfortable. I think the 2009 has even bigger storage capacity than the later 2017+ model. I would like to try a BMW650GT but it is a chain-drive, which I try to avoid. I have heard that it is built by Kymco but I don't know if this is true.

And the BMW C650GT wasn't a product of Kymco. It was made (2012-2020) in Germany. Only its engine was assembled by Kymco, but without using it in any Kymco-vehicle. (The AK550- and also MyRoad 700-engines were different to the 650ccm-BMW-engine.) The 3 screens of the AK550 aren't changeable, only the round center Noodoe-screen is. I can get three bags of groceries under my seat and you say the Burgman can get 3 times as much? If you had a bike that you loved you would not need five other bikes. Kymco builds BMW bikes for BMW and so I would say that there is definitely no issues with reliability or broken parts/systems. Enjoy your many bikes.....I love mine

@@jeffquickle3793 if there was new burgman 650 I would have bought one also if the honda X ADV 750 was in the states I would traded the AK. I would have bought them before the AK550. Like I said the AK550 is sitting at home because of a starter problem. Bottom line if you like the AK good for you. Also after hooking up a battery tender pigtail , there is a open hole in the front fairing to let water get through to the battery and electrical relays. I carry a roll of duct tape to cover the hole if I think its going to rain. Poor engineering. Along with the oil filter location. And I've changed it without removing all the plastic. Bad design. Opions are like a..holes everybody has one. Mine comes from 50 + motorcycles and over 50 years of riding. .

With all been said and specially the heated grips stock in the AK550 why will a savvy shopper ho for anything else (other than the stupid image and label factor, which are -not- savvy)?

Have Scooter manufacturers actually lost the plot ? Many bikers turn to scooters because of age or like me aching joints /bad arthritis etc.. They seem to be hell bent on making it impossible to get on and off the things. For me and for pure comfort and ease of getting on and off, the Burgman wins hands down but once again insanity reins supreme because they have stopped making it ! I owned a X-ADV for 30 miles ! Sent it back under a 14 day approval because with my motorcycle trousers on , the thing would easily topple over whilst I was trying to dismount. BTW had a BMW GT650 overtake me in my car yesterday, boy could that thing move !

Yeah, the perfect scooter for folks with bad joints would have a perfectly flat floor you could drag your feet across. The downside there is you'd lose all the support and rigidity required in the design of the larger, heavier scooters and end up with a sway-back horse.

Kymco makes a 700cc motor, right? When is that coming to N. America?

Used to, the MyRoad 700i {699.5cc} was discontinued in 2015 in favour of new engine designs and production of the AK [the company chairman's initials, Allen Ko] 550. Go to the bikes and beards channel, they took one or two as trade--ins and have a video on it. Or come to Canada and take one of the leftovers from Studio Cycle, Dundas St.West in Toronto. B & B has links to their {SRK} dealership on that channel. Can't put an URL in, YT shadow deletes my posts with those.

Probably never. It will obliterate all other scooters and motorcycle business all together. From A to Z, from scooter to tourer. That system will put all the other vendors out of business so logically, the pressure to prevent it. My two cents. But I am just a heavily opinionated not clue what i am talking about guy that thinks the market is overly tilted to looks and brand rather than logical delivery from OEM to you without gimmick luxury packages. Get a Kymco and laugh at everyone else (but not in their face) for continue to be lied at with promises of “status” and head turnings. Heated grips and blue tooth connectivity out of the box? I am interested even if 700 never comes. I will even go on this cross country! By the way. I am not a scooter enthusiast per se. I had been riding motorcycles on and off for 40 years. My say is, with temperatures between 45 and 88F and no salt on the roads, Two wheels all the way (except formal dining and groceries, bulky items).

@@ClevelandMoto i checked in with the only Kymco retailer in evansville (Big 4) and he said he doesn't move enough of those to justify the minimum order this year. He was telling me another guy was mad because he wanted a new 300. I guess I'm one of two guys who asked about the 550.

Kymco AK550 sounds as if it is a step-through frames motorcycle, rather than a scooter. Give it bigger wheels and I could be tempted.
@goru426

If you increase the wheel size you will lose all the storage and part of the agility. I own the Ak 550i and the wheels are just the right size in my opinion. You should look for an automatic motorcycle with larger wheels.
