That's Jeff Porcaro on drums and Steve Lukather on guitar and David Paich on keys, all riding high as Toto at the time. He used them for the song because they were the cream of the crop of L.A. session musicians. It's also Christine McVie and Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac on backing vocals, because other than the Beach Boys which are mentioned in the song there's nothing more L.A. than Fleetwood Mac.. Epic song!

Randy Newman has had a very very long career as a songwriter, starting out in the 60s. I was a fan of his in the 70s when he started performing as well as write. In the 80s he drifted more into movie soundtrack writing. That ran in the family; his uncles Alfred and Lionel were film composers. I loved "Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear" "Dayton Ohio 1903" "Louisiana 1927" "A Wedding In Cherokee County" "Baltimore" "It's Money That Matters." His biggest hit as a performer was "Short People." He also wrote hits for other artists like "Mama Told Me Not To Come."
@dandare42
@dandare42 6 күн бұрын
He was never the most prolific at putting out albums in a time where major artists pumped out at least one a year. He did his first six between 1968 and 1979 but has put out just six ever since. But plenty of soundtrack work so he does stay busy. His records were never platinum hits, so he has probably made a lot more money by going the Hollywood route while the studio albums are ways to feed the artistic muse too.

Randy Newman is one of our greatest songwriters. You’ll know him from his scores for movies, notably the Toy Story movies. To get a very different side of him, try Sail Away (or anything else on that album) or Marie (or anything else on the album Good Old Boys). I Love LA was written to be the anthem for the 1984 Summer Olympics, which were held in LA. Finally, LA is as much of an experience as a city. There is no place quite like it. And, regardless of anything else good or bad, you can stand on a beautiful beach any day of the year and look across the water at tomorrow.

I was born and raised in Los Angeles(Hollywood to be exact), and honestly with the traffic, high cost of living, over crowding, there isn't much left to love about LA. But this song always takes me back to my childhood and better times, when the city was one of the best in the world, and even if it wasn't, it felt that way. This song is just amazing, and I haven't heard it in awhile, and with the week I've been having, this is much appreciated.

Great artist, Randy Newman. Wrote all kinda different songs happy ones like this one, satirical like 'Short People' and thoroughly depressing (but great) songs like 'Baltimore'. Word of advice: If you go to L.A. stay north of downtown. I LOVED L.A. when I lived there (mid 1980's), I wish I could've found a decent job, I'd have stayed there. I lived on Bronson just a block north of Sunset Boulevard. I could see the "Hollywood" sign from my front door.

And speaking of L.A.s Golden Age - - this song came out the Year Before the Summer Olympics came to L.A. !! So it got replayed All Summer!

It's actually a sarcastic song that references some of LA's problems, like homelessness and shallowness, and names various streets that were not the nicer areas in the 80s. It's a bit of an inside joke for locals, whereas most everyone else will just think that it's praising the city. Newman wrote the lyrics to be ambiguous and taken either way, but he was definitely making a little fun of his hometown.

Yep. Most of what Randy has written has been satire and so few people have gotten it in the long run. He sometimes had/has the ability shock when he writes from the mind of unsavoury characters. No one can write from the point of view of a flawed person quite like Randy. "Rednecks" and "Short People" aren't his own beliefs nor him trying to shock for the sake of it, but rather mocking bigoted types by exposing their viewpoint. "I Love L.A." is more on the light-hearted side, sarcastically praising his hometown much like how he portrays the square who's horrified by drug culture on "Mama Told Me Not To Come." It's what makes his serious, sentimental songs so jarring and brilliant. He can write touching material too.

This song and video came out in 1983. Randy Newman is almost known more of a songwriter than a singer, but he had a few hits of his own over the years. As others have mentioned, he did the song, "You've got a friend in me" from the Toy Story movie. "Short People" is a funny song. He has done music for numerous movies. Seven of his relatives, (mostly cousins), are professional conductors or classical composers.

I got to visit LA in 1982 just before my 17th birthday. Just like London in the 1960s, and New York City in the 1970s, LA was THE cultural center during the 1980s. Amber's right it was a golden era for the city. The Lakers had it going on, a lot of rock albums and music videos were getting made there and of course all the TV and movies being made as usual, though back in those days, most of the TV shows were actually set in LA because it's where everybody wanted to be. It's a far cry from that these days but I'm glad I got to go see it in its heyday.

You said it’s your first time hearing Randy Newman but what you don’t realize is he’s done a lot of songs for a lot of movies, so without even knowing it you’ve heard him!! “Toy Story “ “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” that’s one of his songs!!

I was working for an entertainment focused courier service in the mid 90's when I was dispatched to an address above Sunset Blvd "See Randy for a recording to be picked up" from the movie "Toy Story", from Randy Newman himself. Nice guy, offered me a coffee while I waited on his couch I said no thank you to which he replied "Good 'cuz I ain't got none!" 😁

Randy has been around longer than Huey, plus he's written music for several movie soundtracks, he and Danny Elfman started in specific music genres and expanded into major composers. There were a couple of other people who evolved in the same way as well. The late 70's through the mid 80's produced a lot of talented individuals who are still unmatched. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️

I’m sure people already told you the songs he did for Toy Story and monsters inc. but he also wrote “you can leave your hat on” and Joe Cocker covered it. His song writing is unique because he usually write from someone else’s point of view. His parents were both college professors, and a lot of his songs are about actual history also. Check out his song “Louisiana 1927”.

Mid 80's was a golden time for Los Angeles, the 1984 Summer Olympics was held in the city. Frank Sinatra had a tribute to L.A. released in 1984 called "L.A. is my Lady" with a lot of famous people doing cameos in the video. Also I think around 1987 Cheech and Chong had a funny song parody of Springsteen's "Born in the USA" called "Born in East L.A." that also borrowed from this Randy Newman video.

i love that he included disneyland in the video even though it's in neighboring orange county (where i grew up and still live). you see the matterhorn ride ("look at that mountain") and the old marquee sign from the entrance. cheech marin (of cheech and chong) did a song/music video called "born in east L.A." which parodies this video near the end.
